enxrjm Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 What are the current budget road tyres of choice? Just realised I'm running on slicks!
AL G Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 BF Goodrich "G_Force Profile". (must NOT be "Profiler_g") £260 fitted apparently from Costco for full size (195/50/15 and 225/46/16).... I'll be ringing them on payDay as I've got a fooked back tyre.
Snapper Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 I am sorry but you have a light weight performance sports car and you want to stick cheap budget tyres on it Are you F€(king mad Thats like giving a rock climber leg irons Having driven a Caterham on cheap road tyres and then swapped them for yoko 21s road tyre there was a world of difference. I would never put cheap tyres on a car again. I have just had to replace all four tyres on my 4x4 which came to close to £ 700, may I add £ 700 I didn't really have going spare at the moment. Tyre dealers said that they could put some really cheap ones on which would save me nearly £ 200. I spent the extra because I felt it was worth it seeing I need to get from A to B quickly. You may save yourself some money by sticking cheap tyres on your car now, but if it goes off the road sideways you have to ask yourself was it realy worth penny pinching? Given that you drive a light weight sports car I would always go for a good set of tyres. If it was an old runner that just popped around town then I would agree that you may be able to save some money. I am not saying that you need to get sticky tyres like Yoko 48s for the Elise but you have to remember that cheap tyres will affect your braking, traction, road holding, cornering and handeling in the event of taking evasive action. The cheap tyre will brake away very quickly and you will have much less chance of catching it. Ask yourself what losing your no claims bonus will cost you and ask yourself is it worth it? Just my honest opinion. I don't wish to be rude...
dss123 Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 Steady Snapper! The guy isn't putting re-moulds on the damn thing! Both T1-Rs and G-Force P's are considered as mighty fine tyres for the Elise. Sure, they are not up to the performance of Advans or the track day specials, but damn close for the majority of drivers. I'd say, if you need to watch the pennies, putting either of these two makes on your Elise is not doing it a dis-service in any way. Dunc
Steve J Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Toyos T1-Rs and BF Goodrich G-Force Profilers are the tyres of choice for general road use. They are so-called budget tyres for Elises but by no means budget performers. I think the BF is starting to get a bigger following than the Toyos of late. Think of them as rock climbing boots for the wet rather than ultra sticky ones for the dry.
enxrjm Posted May 20, 2006 Author Posted May 20, 2006 Hang on Snapper - I'm not after CHEAP tyres, just asking what the current feeling is regards good performing road tyres. Last time I bought some Toyo T1-S were the tyre of choice for most but realise this may have changed since then. I don't want to fork out for tyres good for track days that I'm not going to use. The elise is my daily commute and I need it to stick to the windy country roads I commute on in all weather. Plus am saving for a wedding, my brakes are on they're last few thousand miles and my exhaust is fooked - hence the budget! Has anyone fitted T1-R's recently - how much did they cost compared to the £260 quoted for the Goodrich's above?
GCCK Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Hi Richard! Horizon are a Toyo stockist and I know they're open this morning so give them a call for stock etc. You coming on the run round the Cotswolds tomorrow then?

I swapped them from the Bridgestone Pots I was using before. Coupled with a geo I have a hard time trying to unstick it from the road
AL G Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 I was quoted £325 fitted for T1-R's yesterday, which apparently is cheap - just to give you a ball park idea mate It's gotta be BFG's though.. I've heard them being fitted for even as low as £240 !!! (although £260 seems more realistic)
enxrjm Posted May 21, 2006 Author Posted May 21, 2006 Looks like I'd better sort out some Goodrichs then. Graham - hope the run was good ... will definitely be up for a run sometime when I've got all the niggly problems sorted out that I'm having at the moment. Costco website looks poor - just found this on mytires.co.uk: BF Goodrich g-FORCE PROFILER 195/50 R15 82V £ 37.30 2 £ 74.60 BF Goodrich g-FORCE PROFILER 225/50 R16 92W £ 79.70 2 £ 159.40 Subtotal 4 £ 234.00 inc. VAT and delivery but not fitting. Are these sizes correct? - couldn't find the 225 in 45 profile as stated by Alasdair BF Goodrich "G_Force Profile". (must NOT be "Profiler_g") £260 fitted apparently from Costco for full size (195/50/15 and 225/46/16).... I'll be ringing them on payDay as I've got a fooked back tyre. Same website gives Toyos as: Toyo PROXES T1-R 195/50 R15 82V Rim-protectionleiste £ 32.60 2 £ 65.20 Toyo PROXES T1-R 225/50 ZR16 92W Rim-protectionleiste £ 74.20 2 £ 148.40 Subtotal 4 £ 213.60 will call Horizon for a comparison tomorrow
AL G Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Costco are a pain in the ass . . I know 2 people who have bought and had fitted BFGs 195/50/15 (speed rating V) and 225-45-16 (speed rating ZRW). I've rung the SAME Costco 3 times now, and they still claim not to sell 225-45-16 - even though I've seen them on the car they fitted em to !!!! They've asked me to get the membership or receipt number so they can see what they sold him! p.s. Think it's got to be 45 profile on the rear, not 50. I'm no expert, but am sure someone will confirm that 50 profile is too high.

Tires are a new thing to me in the respect of buying them normally have the company to do all that but now with the weather getting as it is i find my self waggling the back end if im a bit too heavy on the accelerator down the groby road. Tires need sorting but unsure what to get. Enxc was saying Toyo PROXES T1-R 195/50 R15 82V Rim-protectionleiste for front and Toyo PROXES T1-R 225/50 ZR16 92W Rim-protectionleiste for the rear is that what your going to go with? If so i might do the same.
