gerags Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 What I should've explained when I said lift off is... On me Walshy day, we were told that any change in the stability of your car whilst travelling through the corner can, as has been mentioned, affect the grip of the wheels causing a spin (or worse) What i was advised to do, on the airfield I might add, was to keep the speed constant - meaning no clutch dipping and lift off before turning in (so you're not tempted to lift off half way round) Obviously you won't do this on a public road as you'd be leaving the corner at 5 miles per hour and looking like a knob. Sorry if it was misleading. Steve
steve Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 I would love to know where this disused airfield is.....
gerags Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 And me. I need more practise off the public highway MLOC day out anyone ?
Howard Posted February 15, 2006 Author Posted February 15, 2006 Steve Sorry about the late reply, was out until 1 am sliding around. Learnt a little bit still can't catch the snap when it goes, however had a beer on the way back, all in all a good evening. The airfield is Langar west of Nottingham, used by Parachute training club some odd weekends, people like me, learner drivers and bikers rest of the time never had a problem. Howard

Howard <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I used to jump there years ago - from what I can remember, the surface was riddled with potholes - has it been improved then?
jeffers Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 The airfield is Langar west of Nottingham, used by Parachute training club some odd weekends, people like me, learner drivers and bikers rest of the time never had a problem. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just did some digging, found that theres a website that lists all UK airfields (inc. abandoned ones). Might see if I can find something similar in my area. UK Airfields Fingers crossed!
PPPMAT Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 I know where I'm off to on saturday then - worth a drive out there anyway - some great roads
christurbo Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 >THIS< airstrip [fradley - lichfield] is well good although I think its closed to the public - you can pay to race around there though.
dss123 Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Howard, Can you just rock up and have a drive about?? Seems a bit odd? Is there not any security? I'd love to find somewhere to have a little play. Dunc
Nick gee Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 I haven't been to Langar for a couple of years but last time i went that airfield was definately active with light aircraft. There used to be (or still is ) a go-kart track up there as well.
Steve J Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 F1 carting is next to it and yes it's used by the Nottingham model aircraft club.
sriches Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Geo then Walshy day, for sure. Engineer out any unusual traits then play with a car that's straight. Playing around in an empty car cark is all very well but Walshy gives you a framework (plus a much bigger airfield to cut loose on). You'll derive so much confidence from the experience. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm booked on a Walshy day in March. Unfortunately, there are no other Elise's booked, however, it will be interesting as the other participants have a GT3 and a VXT. I'm hoping the day will increase my confidence and teach me some new skills.
Steve J Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Excellent. You can spend the free time explaining to the others why they've bought the wrong car. Then you can get in your car and show them why they've bought the wrong car.
