when i picked up the car there was a letter from lotus stating that the roof should not be removed.

I believe it is due to keeping the air clean for the rear wing and a smooth air flow for cooling the engine bay.

The ridigity shouldn't make much difference as the chasis is basically the elise.

I think it looks great with the roof off, I know that if we get a sunny spell (if!) once mine has arrived I will be severely tempted, even if it does seem to be frowned upon by some of the "hardcore" Exige owners!

From what I can gather, it only affects the roof warranty - i.e. for water ingress etc.

I'm sorry....but maybe I'm missing the point here.....(either that or just a "hardcore" owner ! )

If you want a car to take the roof off of, buy an Elise - 111R.

Why buy an Exige and then take the roof off......Ok...because you can maybe, but I still don't understand.....

I knew someone would say something like that! :P

I'm buying an Exige because I want an Exige, not an Elise. In my opinion, and presumably yours, its the better car. 95% of the time I want a coupe not an open top. For the "true Exige experience" its got to be roof on as Lotus intended. But if I've got a car which can go topless, on the odd occasion that I might want it to, why on earth not?

To be honest I still can't see what the diffrence between the S2 Exige and 111R are anyway apart from the roof?

Total change of topic, but do you really get that much more grip with a set of tyres and stiffer springs?

Did everyone here decide between a Exige 111R? Or was it always an Exige from the start?

Just wondering!

(Hiya Ladders! Check you mail)

The Exige is great, but then so is the 111R, personally I would go for the styling Exige option and take the roof off, I would assume the reason lotus do not suggest this is to try and keep the two cars as seperate entities, as we all know the 111R can be made almost as the exige with twin oil coolers, stiffer sus etc ?

Unless I wanted to save some money, in which case I would have a 111R, however the Exige should remain a more 'exclusive' car?

If I had the money :P

Think I'd go for the 111R, and have the Exige shocks and tyres. A guy on one of the runs did just that I think. Just think you get the best of both worlds then. But then again thats what you get if you take the roof off the Exige! Horses for courses!

I do agree with halfpenny that the car is a coupe and i don't really have any plans to take the roof off.

I also didn't think that it would look good with the roof off because of the air intake and the rear wing, but i think the car looks good without the roof.

I was led to believe that the warrenty could be void on the engine if damage was caused by overheating.

Alistar Mcqueen (lotus factory driver bloke) told me that the s2 exige is several seconds a lap quicker than a standard 111r due to much higher conering speeds. He said one of the corners on the lotus test track you can go round 10-15 mph quicker in an exige than a 111r.

Admitadly you can probably get 95% of this by adding the exige tyres / wheels /suspension. But personally i love the rear wing, front spliter and fake roof air intake.
