Steve G Posted October 5, 2003 Posted October 5, 2003 Recently fitted EliseParts exhaust and Cat Rep Pipe. As such the old cat is sat in the garage and I though I would prepare it in case it needed to go back on at some point. The studs that are part of the cat are really badly rusted (so bad that you can hardly tell that there is a thread on them in some places). With the new exhaust came stainless bolts and nuts. If at some point I needed to refit the cat I would like to fit it using the stainless nuts and bolts and therefore need to get these old rusted bolts out of the cat. At the moment they are completely stuck. Are they captivated or are they physically part of the cat and require drilling out? Didn't fancy hitting them too hard with anything to see if they were just wedged in with rust as I believe the internals of the cat are made of ceramic aren't they? Cheers, Steve.
Mark H Posted October 5, 2003 Posted October 5, 2003 Dont go hitting it too hard or you will start seeing the internals of the cat coming out of the thing Why would you want to refit it? just throw the garage a few quid when they do the MOT test
jez_s Posted October 5, 2003 Posted October 5, 2003 Try spraying the threads (what's left of them) with some penetrating oil,wd40 or eezit. Leave to soak, then use some gentle persuasion hopefully they should just crack off Hope this helps jez
Scott_Mac Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 Does paying the garage actually work?? The one where i get my car MOT'd actually gives you a printout with the emissions on, therefore may be a little tricky to get away with! I do know the bloke v.well though.. so it may work! I have an option on a 4-2-1 manifold so the sports exhaust/cat pipe may have to happen soon aswell... though my ears hurt from the return trip to Swansea, so the extra noise may not be all good!
Kris H Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 Scott Why's yours so noisy, or is it just the 'usual' type of noisy? Kristian
Scott_Mac Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 Erm, its noisy but that could be normal noisy. I went in a full de-cat, sports exhaust 4-2-1 car a hwile back and after 10 mins was nearly deaf... the other half thinks my car is too loud as it is and gets a headache... so i'm not sure. Mine does actually have a sports zorst of some sort on it too, i am 99% sure, its far louder than any others I ahve ever driven that are std....
Kris H Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 If you go for the 4-2-1 would be interested to know what difference it makes - am having a janspeed exhaust and sports cat fitted tomorrow and am wondering about whether or not to do anything else once that's done. Didn't want to go down the CRP route since I can't be bothered with sorting out MIL problems and chopping bits back and forth whenever it gets to be MOT time. Suspect that it won't be quite so noisy in mine though as they're quite well sound proofed inside. Actually, it would be handy if anyone could point me in the direction of something that told me what all the various upgrades discussed actually do since I am pretty clueless on such things... Kristian
