Noisy Gearbox?

Is the Elise prone to noise from the gearbox? Normal driving ie car in gear/foot on accelarator-no noise. Let the car freewheel in gear and a noise like gears rotating results. Accelerating again or pressing the clutch stops it. Is this normal?Main dealer told me it was 'cos its a rover gearbox.

Steve, this is normal!

 

It's because the gearbox is sitting a few inches behind your head! What you don't hear in normal cars you hear in the Elise.

 

This can be fixed by such mods as a sports exhuast, induction kit and de-cat pipe!

Dynamat under the seats and up the rear bulkhead can help. Doesn't cure the source though.
