Radiators/head Gaskets

First post so hello….had my s2 on an 03 plate for 4 months now just covered 11000 miles over the weekend the radiator went bang…..had a new one fitted at the dealer and the head gasket checked….you guessed it head gasket needs replacing too.

 

Is this as bad as I think and has this happened to anybody else?

I've had to have the rad replaced.... bit scary on a car that new though.

 

As for head gasket failure, sadly also very common

Sounds like you got air into the cooling system and thus HGF

 

Surprised the radiator went but I guess a stone hitting it could create a hole you may not notice.

Lou at Tollgate dealt with my HGF last year at about £500 from memory. Due to the position of the rad in the Elise stome damage seems unlikely IMHO. I would hassle the seller for a contribution if you bought from a Lotus shop or a decent dealer.

My head gasket went about 4 months ago - after 21000 miles in my MK2. It was replaced by Horizon for about £400 - NW quoted about £1000. Service from Horizon was impeccable as usual!

Apart from water in the oil, are there any other signs to look out for that indicate the HG is on the way out?
