Brake Discs Elise S1/s2

Hello,I was just wondering about the differences between the Discs that fit S1 and the ones for S2.Are the S2 disc bigger (in diameter) ? if so, would they fit S1 15" wheels? I'm asking this because I thought if the disc a bigger, shouldn't they be better regarding heat release etc... ???On early MX5 1.6 (pre 94) it is usual practice to fit some 1.8 disc (bigger) to ehance brake perf... so may be the same for elise S1???? CheersI found this on seloc:

S2 Elise and ExigeSeries 2 Elises are fitted with 288mm vented iron discs. The discs on the S2 are different to those one the S1. This is due to the S1 iron discs being a copy of the original MMC discs and therefore an uncoventional size. S2's were shipped as standard with plain discs, with cross drilled versions being available as an option. Later S2's were shipped with the cross drilled discs as standard. The S2 discs feature longer, curved internal flow passages which increase the disc stability and reduce hot spot formation. The revised hole pattern has been specified to complement the new vane arrangement. The discs are not handed, so the same disc is used on the right and left hand sides of the car. The cooling air flow through the left and right discs is identical and the flow rate is purely a result of pressure differential between the centre of the disc and its rim; the shape of the vanes and the direction of rotation does not affect the flow rate significantly. Some noise from the brakes themselves is to be expected but there is a fix to stop brake pads banging in the calipers.

Are you experiencing brake fade? If not then no point going for bigger discs.

Are you able to lock the wheels under braking near the end of a session on track? If you can then your brakes are working well enough.

Even on track with sticky tyres and ~150bhp I have never experienced brake fade with standard Elise S2 discs.

Keep the fluid fresh (I change it about twice a year) and go for braided hoses to improve feel.

Brakes works but they keep getting warped... I don't understand why. Check the ball joint, run etc... so I can only see hot spot issues so I though bigger discs may be a solution.

I'm not totally convinced with mintex 1144, I think i'll go back to pagid as I really like their perf/feeling but don't like their price :(.

oh, brake fluid (5.1 AP) is 2 month old and runs through goodridge hoses :)

Bill, do you leave the handbrake off when you get back to the pits, to allow them to cool. (This would only affect the rear disks)

How do you know the discs are warped? - I presume you are getting some kind of vibration?

Does the vibration occur only when braking?

Does the vibration under braking cause the steering wheel to wobble or does the whole car shake (ie. is vibration caused by front or rear)?

Is the vibration there from cold or does it only happen once you've been driving for a while?

Can you jack up each side of the car and try spinning the wheels by hand (watch your fingers!) to see if any wheel has a greater level of resistance?

The vibrations get worse when brakes get warm (I guess it is due the dilatation)

I have vibrations in steering when braking and judder. this shows the front are warped

and I feel the brake catching when I apply handbrake leaving the car going down hill thanks to gravity so rear are.

I had the disc perf check and it shows 1 front disc and 1 real disc aren't flat.

I bellieve the front are "bad" and rear are "slightly" warped. The weird thing is the vibrations are present on soft braking (foot on pedal) and don't seem to come though on hard braking (firm push on pedal)

For X mas, I plan to refurbish the rear caliper in my parent's local renault garage and clean everything, put new dsic andd probably some pagid...

and change front ball joints...
