enxrjm
No we're moving out on Sunday. Just a thought - why do you want to try my gearchange - I've not done anything too it. I thought it was the braided brake hoses you were interested in?
Steve J
That's me getting confused. Sorry. Too many things I want to check as worth while before shelling out the hard-earned. Can I check out the brakes then?

Kris H
Rich FWIW I think you've made the right call. Flat structures seem great if you're near the bottom but complete gonads if you're near the top - basically flat structures are cool until you want a promotion and kind of realise that unless the owner for some reason decides you really had ought to be the next MD, then you're still the dog's body. Moving from a large company when you have experience to a small one will give you added credibility as well, and frankly, looks better on your CV. More opportunities to do different things and better career prospects if it's a half decent company. Don't underestimate teh value of decent holidays either - major culture shock going from 48 weeks holiday a year (which I think I had at university) to 4 weeks. I would be inclined to do temping or something rather than piss an employer around personally. More difficult to explain why you left when any subsequent employer asks. Difference you make would be minimal and you'll probably get it back in tax relief anyway. Well done as well Kristian
Zircon450
Basically head says take the cash to spend on new toys, heart says other company will be better working conditions. Richy, I seriously thought about this before posting. You have options. The difference between a rich man and wealthy man is :- The rich man has options The wealthy man has options and the funding to do it ! At your age, bag the cash, the option may not come up again. You will be a wealthy man i think. Bob

GCCK
Richard Well done! I once did what you're about to do, i.e. accept two jobs. Have to say it was the most brain scrambling experience ever - like dating two women, except with feelings of guilt on top!!! You can decide if you want to jump ship from #1 to #2, but sounds obvious, you can't go back to #1 if #2 doesn't pan out, and then you'll just hate yourself. BE you'll be a small cog in a very big wheel. very decentralised, no visibility top to bottom. Very easy to look busy and get by, if your real passions lie elsewhere (e.g. home, hobbies etc.). The bureauocracy drags even the most enthusiastic down to a level of mediocrity in time. Probably lots of useful benefits like pension, healthcare and it will always look good on a CV, although you may be forced to overspecialise. Small company you have to live & breathe the culture. Probably long hours, hectic lifestyle. If you like it, you'll get sucked in. If you don't like it, you'll be miserable because you know you don't fit in. I recommend giving the smaller company a longer try out, to make sure you're doing the right thing. Explain to BE that after hearing about the 6-week delay, you want to take advantage of the time and do some things first. See if they'll accept you in 8, 10 or 12 weeks rather than simply accepting their timescale. Also, the way they respond to this request may tell you a lot about the company: if they can't be flexible about this, does this mean they will be inflexible about other things? Good luck, whichever you choose. At least you can keep the Lotus now! Graeme
enxrjm
Thanks for all the useful advice, and it is definitely a relief to know the car can stay, plus 9 years at university not completely wasted. Agree with what you say Graeme. BE will give me much better training and chance to become chartered so I can move into other areas later, but the long winded and complicated entrance procedure worries me and would hate to find myself with no job at all. Will definitely give the IT job a fair go, and will try and hold BE for as long as possible to satisfy myself that I'm making the correct decision. I now have sleepless nights cos of aching conscience rather that worrying about being unemployed, amazing how work is so stressful and I haven't even started yet
