Limited To 5500rpm

Has anyone got any ideas on why my elise is limited to 5500rpm.

Originally I thought it was temperature related, but so far I've changed both the blue and brown temp sensors and also fitted a remote stat.

Even when the engine is up to temp (around 85C) I'm getting the rev limiter kicking in at around 5500 rpm.

From reading previous threads I suspect that it might be something to do with the VVC unit (it's a S1 111s), but I don't even know what straw to clutch at next :(

Any help greatly appreciated!

Has the engine management light come on at all?

VVC unit is a possibility.

Found this on piston heads.

hope it helps but does suggest the vvc may be faulty or not set up correctly.

Looks like there were a multitude of problems from various people in that thread to be honest. I had a VVC mech go on an MG about 4 years ago, you knew something was wrong as it knocked and banged on tickover and revving. Revved all the way past 7K still though.

Does it sound like the rev limiter is stopping it revving? With your foot to the floor in neutral, the needle should bounce slightly when the ecu cuts 1 cylinder out when it hits the limiter. However, if it's just not able to carry on increasing revs, i.e. the increase in revs slows and eventually stops at 5.5K (without the bouncing) then it could be something to do with lack of airflow. That could be down to anything from the VVC mech stuck at the shortest cam duration to a blocked airfilter or a whole load of things in between.

Have you had any work done on the car recently and more imoprtantly, has it revved passed 5.5K since the work was done (assuming you have had work done)??

Hi there - I have an S1 exige and have suffered this problem on several occaisons.

The symptoms are car ok when started up and until you get over 5500 rpm in third and then wont rev past 5500 rpm - in any gear.

On the S1 K series exige this is the limp home mode being activated and happens when one of the signals to the ECU is out of its expected range.

On mine the k light does not come on becuase it is the OSR wheel speed sensor which is mounted on the lower wishbone and if I go kerb hopping on track the connector seems to come apart / signal breaks down and ....... 5500 rpm sets in. Take the OSR wheel off and its the sensor that runs along the wishbone.

Can be cleared by remaking the connection and disconneting the battery for a couple of minutes to clear the memory and the limp home mode.

Then reset the ECU - think the process is ignition to the accessories position and then press the throttle all the way to the stop and release 3 times. Then ignition off an start the car - the process is on the web so do a search on common Rover MEMS symptoms and you'll easily find it.

Good luck !

Hi Steve - don't know about the elise but you may be right - worth disconneting the battery to clear the memory and get out of limp home.

Anyway don't suppose you have to worry about that little "characterstic" now.

Hows the new engine and which charger did you go for - integra or civic ?
