steve Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 Luckily it snapped with the boot open so i'm now driving around with the boot rattling! I assume its an easy job to change (so easy, in fact, even i could do it!) but do i need to clan out the outer cable first? if so, how? any other tips? cheers steve
Scott_Mac Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 You would be wrong, its a complete pig of a job Yes you need to get the old one out which is a game, but the most fun is re-attaching the new one... it involves removing the seats and speakers to get your arm down the back of where the cable attaches to the pull bit. Nick Whale did mine for £90, i recommend this. They also replaced it under warranty when it snapped again 6 months later... new one is loads better.
thub Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 The current cable design has the handle end sealed so that the crap doesn't get in it. i.e. You'll be changing the whole unit and not just the inner. To run the cable you'll need to remove the speaker pod, the RH rear wheel and the wheel arch liner. There is an on-line guide at www.elisenet.com.
steve Posted May 25, 2004 Author Posted May 25, 2004 feck me!!!! I thought you were winding me up for a minute!!! it sounds like a job for my mate at brooke kensington!!! I'll decide when the bit comes in the post! thanks for the help guys! steve
Wuddie Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 Steve Me and Beefcake replaced his boot cable on his 111s..it took us approx 2 hours...we didnt remove the drivers seat...just pushed it forwards all the way...roof off is good, we didnt bother removing the wheel and only moved the wheel arch liner out of the way.. It is fiddly and definately needs two people, but if you wanna Blow £90 then you can get the garage to do it!
steve Posted May 25, 2004 Author Posted May 25, 2004 Hmmmm..... I thought it would just be the inner bit i was replacing - that would have been nice and easy! Cant get the elisenet site to work (probably my computer) but theres also the "tizz" noise at 2400 revs which has only just started. ive heard of the anti tizz bracket but what is it that actually makes the noise and why did it just suddenly start???? cheers steve
Scott_Mac Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 The tizz is the manifold catching on the chassis/heatshield thingy... i'd be surprised if it just started happening. You'll be glad to know thats also a pain in the arse to fit As for the boot cable, i have heard it can be done, but you like me will have to have the original crap one replaced with the new design which makes it harder... do-able, but i decided that it was easier to pay £90 (incl the part) and get it sorted... i'm glad i did though as when it broke i just took it back and it was sorted again! Might be worth asking Mike how much they'd charge at Horizon.
steve Posted May 25, 2004 Author Posted May 25, 2004 You'll be glad to know thats also a pain in the arse to fit Brilliant. Thanks. Today just keeps getting better!!!! Your diagnosis sounds about right because it started happening when the downpipe fell off and broke the heat shield. i had it replaced but now it makes the noise. Can't i just mend with a hammer??? cheers steve
Scott_Mac Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 D'oh, silly me i forgot the std "fix all" solution of a hammer Just drove home in mine and its vibrating like a nutter for no apparant reason
steve Posted May 26, 2004 Author Posted May 26, 2004 You can practice doing the anti tizz bracket on mine if you like!!!!
steve Posted May 26, 2004 Author Posted May 26, 2004 Hmmmm. Had a quick look last night and i cant even see how to get the speaker pod off!!! There are the screws that hold the speaker in but i cant see any other fixings..... Come on. tell me i'm thick!!!!
Scott_Mac Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 The screws that hold the speaker in go straight through to the mount thing, undo those and the pod comes out... you can then technically reach behind and get at where you need to be. The whole plastic thing that the speaker bolts into shouldn't ahve to come off btw... but as i recall that is held in with a couple of screws and velcro! You know that £90 from Nick Whale.. its looking more attractive about now isn't it.. admit it As for Anti Tizz.. we could buy 2 and practice
steve Posted May 26, 2004 Author Posted May 26, 2004 Hmmm. Hopefully the bit should be on my doorstep now so i'll have to sort that out first - then i can shut the boot again! Thanks for the advice on the speaker pod thingy! I'll let you know my adverntures.....
Dixie Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 If you can get behind the wheel arch liner and find the cable, a quick tug of it will pop the boot lid!! Thats how i opened my boot for the first month!! Also, it's not that bad a job to do your self. The speaker pod is held in with velcro. Whip that out (velcro can be surprisingly strong sometimes though!!), undo the nut at the back of the pull. undo the nut that hold the boot catch end in (take care not to let the nut slid to the "hole that leads to nowhere"!!!!!). Pull the "pull" end out a bit (6" or so) and cut the pull end off (housing and all). Get some really strong tape (like duck tape) and tape the cut off end to the boot pull end, you'll need to do it neatly so the nut can still slide over the tape. Then you "should" be able to pull the old cable out and drag the new one through at the same time. Just use the old cable nuts and washers (that should have slid over the tape join.) and attach the boot release HTH
Scott_Mac Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 If the cable has snapped though it may not be possible to open it through the wheel arch... you certainly couldn't when mine went first time
