Reverend Green Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Hey all!! Haven't posted anything for yonks on here, only ever want something when something is wrong. Yeah yeah i know lol! Anyway i have an S1 T79 had it for 5 years now it sits in the garage minding it's own business most of the time, having completed a massive 600 miles in 4 years you can see how much use it gets. Usually the car gets driven for a couple of weeks before and after MOT each time i've used it over the last few years there has been a very faint burning smell in the cockpit which goes away after a short drive. Last weekend however i went to move it to my place of storage and once again the burning smell came. This time though there was a lot more smoke in the cockpit on the passenger side when i came to a halt it filled the car with a light smoke inside. I suspect that something is leaking and is getting warm when the car is started and burning off. Like i say after maybe 15 minutes everything was back to normal again. I've searched the forums and can't find a similar story, so my question is where do you think the problem is coming from, where shall i start to look first etc. Any advise and knowledge greatly received. The Rev
surrealillusions Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Is it a plasticy burning? Or a metaly burning? Or a rubbery burning? What colour smoke? Might be a possible oil leak onto the exhaust, but then you should see that on the outside rather than the inside. Might be something at the front if its coming into the cockpit. Is the fusebox on the passenger side in the front? Might be worth looking at that?
fentuz Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I did get that when some dodgy mechanic didn't refit the exhaust heat shield properl.... it smoked: the bulkhead was starting to burn eveything was replaced to the mechanic expenses. check if everything is rightly spaced

Yes it's not oil it's a fine grey smoke looks almost dusty, my money is on a slow leak in the radiator system someplace. Like i say when the car reaches full operating temp it's all gone and doesn't come back unless i leave it parked up for sometime again. I do have to top up the coolant but i do mean top up i'm not putting litres in. Possibly about a cup full every 12 months, the car runs fine when going it's just the initial burning smell and smoke that is the concern.
