Does the Gear Stick Knob un-screw off?

yes. tight though, i had to use a rubber cloth and grips to get mine off

Been there, only a few weeks ago!

 

In the end went to BandQ and picked up a large BOA (10 quidish) worked a treat.

If its still the same the knob is in two halves. Try screwing the bottom half further on while unscrewing the top half.

 

That worked for me without all the mole grips and filter wrenches.
