richbk Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 hi folks i need to take my private plate off my car before i sell it, to make things easy for whoever's involved. this is first car its been on so don't know process. the brum dvla office is nice and close, does it just involve a visit?? will i have to pay to remove it then pay again to put on new car?? is it correct that the car can get any plate number they assign rather than original ( not that it matters!1) cheers richbk
rm0rgan Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Quickest and esiest to visit the office...IMO you would be better off putting the plate on retention and then reassigning it when you get your new car...The original plate should go backon the car once the paperwork is sorted, but I have to warn you, it takes a week at least to complete the process (and get the new log book etc.)All the forms are on the DVLA site to download and complete.I did a 'double shuffle' recently and that was painful! :wacko:Forgot to add...when you put the plate on retention, the cost includes re-assignment to the new car...
Azureblue Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 I also found this a painfull experience, I was persuaded to let the dealer do mine(not local to midlands area). I ended up facing legal action for non payment of road fund eight months after transfer of reg to latest vehicle. They happily took my cash to transfer the regeven though the DVLA knew I didn't own the vehicle, they also didn't acknowledge receipt of V5 sale slip. Ensure you retain any documentation sent by DVLA for at least 12 months and if you do not receive a letter from them acknowledging sale of the vehicle after six weeks, contact them and request one. The responsibility of proof is laid at your feet.
GCCK Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Just completed this process myself, having transferred plates from 1st to 2nd Elise 3 1/2 years ago. Step 1: fill in forms, take MoT + copy of tax disk + logbook + £105 (£25 + £80) & (I think?) insurance docs, with you to the B'ham DVLA office and expect to wait around 1 hour. They take the logbook off you. Step 2: after about 2 weeks, you get a certificate that authorises you to obtain number plates with the new reg. Whenever possible, they'll reunite a car with its original reg, assuming it is still available. You also get new MoT (well' overwritten & stamped original) and a new tax disk, plus an envelope to send back the original tax disk once you've got the new reg plates and put them & new tax disk on the car. Ideally you'll have kept the original plates when you put the private plate on, so no time delay making the swap. Step 3: after a further 2 weeks, the new logbook arrives. You're now completely free to sell the car without complications. Of course, you could anticipate this event approx 4 weeks after taking in the forms when placing adverts etc. Perhaps place advert 2 weeks after forms to be safe. Would take that long to find a buyer, agree a deal and have money ready / transferred. Just reading that back - it could form a wiki if someone knows how?
