Dragon Racing has sued Lotus for at least $4.6 million in damages, accusing the engine manufacturer of damaging its reputation by spreading "especially outrageous" falsehoods about the IndyCar team while failing to deliver two chassis and hurting its ability to be competitive. The lawsuit, filed Friday in California Superior Court in Los Angeles, is just the latest blow for Lotus. The manufacturer has just one team left in the IndyCar Series after Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Bryan Herta Autosport were released from their contracts late last month. Dragon fields cars for Sebastien Bourdais and Katherine Legge. Owner Jay Penske did not respond to a request for commen…

Lotus has confirmed a date for the first track test of the engine that it will take into IndyCar in 2012. The works-aligned HVM Racing squad, whose workshop also serves as Lotus's IndyCar base, is scheduled to give the Lotus power plant its first run at Palm Beach International Raceway on January 13-14 with Simona de Silvestro behind the wheel. The team will then join Chevrolet and Honda-powered squads when they resume their manufacturer testing at Sebring on January 16. Both of the latter manufacturers have already track-tested their engine on several occasions over the past two months. HVM manager Vince Kremer told Indycar.com that his one-car team is working with ot…

Simona de Silvestro climbs in the 2012 Dallara Automobili chassis and exclaims, “I could sleep in here it’s so big.” A few feet away at the HVM Racing shop, “Pork Chop” rests on stands, destined to be a show car in 2012. The Swiss driver, who completed her second IZOD IndyCar Series season with HVM Racing in 2011, affectionately dubbed the chassis “Pork Chop” during an exasperating season. With prospects for a brighter 2012, will she name the next-generation car? “Last year was the first time I named them and it was not the greatest year I’ve had, so I’ll have to think about it,” said de Silvestro, who missed two races – one because of injury and another because of issu…

With top-10 finishes in her previous two starts at this track, a new updated engine, and strong practice sessions all weekend, Lotus HVM Racing driver Simona De Silvestro was poised for a strong qualifying session at the Honda Indy Toronto. Unfortunately, qualifying didn't go as well as she and the team had hoped. On a mostly wet track, De Silvestro had the #78 Nuclear Clean Air Energy car in the top-12 for the majority of this morning's practice before encountering some braking issues on the final two laps resulting in an 18th place finish in the session. With her pace on par with the rest of the field on the 1.75-mile street course, thanks in part to the new engine upd…

Best Finish of the Season so far for Lotus HVM Racing Lotus driver Simona de Silvestro (#78 – Lotus HVM Racing) scored her best season finish in Sunday’s Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. After starting at the back of the field because of an engine change penalty, she’d worked her way up to 13th position by the time the checker flag flew. “I think we can be pretty happy because we finished the race,” said the Swiss driver. “The guys worked really hard the whole weekend just to get the car turned around. We had a really strong racecar; we just have to work on the engine side. It’s still not where we want it to be. I hope we’ll get some updates for the next couple o…

It wasn't an easy day for the Lotus HVM Racing #78 Nuclear Clean Air Energy car at today's Honda Indy Toronto. A day that dawned bright and sunny and full of hope, quickly took a turn for the worse when De Silvestro hit a tire that was knocked into the racing line by Sebastian Bourdais. De Silvestro hit the wall hard and sustained considerable damage to the car. The team worked frantically, managing to repair the car just as the grid was being set. De Silvestro started 25th after being assessed a 10-spot penalty for the unapproved engine change that brought her a bit more power this weekend. On lap 8 she reported an issue with power and was brought into the pit on lap 9.…

Lotus’s Simona de Silvestro had to start at the back of the grid for Sunday’s Californian round following an unapproved engine change, but bounced back to gain ten positions in the race. Good strategy and perfect pit stops made a big difference for the Swiss driver and her Lotus HVM Racing team during the action-filled race at the Infineon Raceway. After 85 laps, De Silvestro finished in 17th position. She performed a nice pass on Ed Carpenter’s eponymous #20 car near the end of the race. Simona de Silvestro: “I guess P17 is okay; I think it was all we could get. We’re still getting passed like we’re standing still on the straightaways, but I think it was a…

The first qualifying session of 2012 was a bit of a struggle for most of the Lotus drivers, but with anything possible during the race and with much-needed further testing just around the corner, everyone is determined to stay focused and keep looking ahead. “We expected to do better than we did today in qualifying,” said Claudio Berro, Director of Lotus Racing. “There were no engine problems, but maybe we were too conservative on the way we prepared for this first qualifying. We need more testing to better understand the car. I know it’s frustrating for the drivers. Tomorrow’s race will be very interesting, with the times being so close. Strategy, pit stops, accidents, …

Alex Tagliani and his Team Barracuda – BHA crew earned a fifteenth place finish for his #98 car on the streets of St. Petersburg for the IZOD IndyCar Series season opener on Sunday. The team made consistent improvements throughout the race weekend, leading up to Saturday’s qualifying effort, where Tagliani earned P17 on the starting grid. On Sunday, the Canadian driver completed 100 incident-free laps in the Series’ brand-new Dallara DW12 chassis and finished higher than all the other Lotus-powered cars in the competition. “I’m very proud of Team Barracuda – BHA, and I want to thank Barracuda and Bowers & Wilkins,” said Tagliani. “After a very limited testing schedu…
