Latest Computer Virus Attacks (nlc)

Don't know about everyone else, but i'm getting pretty fed up with all the virus riddled emails flying around at the moment. We had 6 networked pc's that managed to get infected with the W32/Netsky.B@MM virus yesterday, it took me most of the day to go through everyones computers and make sure everything was OK. Don't understand why these got infected because I have all our pc's completely up todate with anti-virus and the firewall is set to reject as much as it can without it rejecting every email with an attachment.

I used the Stinger program (written by Mcafee) to get rid of the viruses that i'm sure a lot of people already know about but i'm sure there are plenty who don't.

The URL to download it is http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ (it's about 750k)

Download a free anti-virus program from here http://www.grisoft.com

Also make sure you are completely protected and download the free firewall from Zonelabs. http://www.zonelabs.com

Zone Alarm is good... takes a while to get it all up and running smoothly, but its good.

Stinger is also very good :(

I am amazed at the recent prevalence of evil virii, i recommend that everyone have some AV of some sort - though not Norton cos its rubbish. McAfee is the best!

The virus are damn annoying although do generate a bit of income for us IT types.

Personally I don't rely on any single product on the mail gateways. Most virus packages are sent via mail and the speed of updates to the virus scanning software is important. Since some software companies almost race to get the new identity out I try to use 3 different vendors and every mail must pass through all three. They are also updated every hour. Delay is only an extra few seconds at most.

This does seem over kill by some but if you have ever had your network downed by a virus and lost 5 days worth of work, well those people just wished for this in the first place.

For the home user it isn't as easy to be protected but I do still suggest more than one scanner but setup differently.

One for purely file system scanning, on access scanning it is classeda s by many.

An another purely for mail, checking all mail that is sent or received.

Even if scanner for mail does not pick up virus the on access will when it launches.

My recommendatiosn are Sophos (business mainly), McAfee and TrendMicro
