IanMac Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Merry Christmas all hope everyone’s having a fantastic break. I noticed this morning that my expansion tank is looking strange (I think). All the coolant is on one side of the tank instead of in the bottom? Is this normal? 1 Quote
MG4Lotus Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 I don't have an Elise but I'm guessing you have rolled your car. 🤣 Quote
Dave-hp Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Mine always seems to have one side higher than the other. So not that unusual. Is that in a cool or warm state? Quote
IanMac Posted December 28, 2025 Author Posted December 28, 2025 Hi Dave. Its both to be honest. Its almost like its stuck there. Quote
Lithopsian Posted December 28, 2025 Posted December 28, 2025 I think that's how it is supposed to work. It is to help with bleeding. The small chamber fills up and any air bubbles can be expelled through the white plug at the top. The coolant can then flow to the main chamber to be re-circulated. Quote
winthattt Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 That’s how it should be! As the coolant expands it pushes into the main tank in the bottle, when it cools and contracts it goes back. As said, the white plug is to let any air our, once done should never need to be done again. One thing to watch, sunlight can make the plastic very brittle and the fall apart. Quote
IanMac Posted December 29, 2025 Author Posted December 29, 2025 Ok so it looks normal, thanks guys. I've only had the car for 6 months and never noticed it before. Thank you all 👍 Quote
Justin C Posted January 11 Posted January 11 I would recommend upgrading to an aluminium tank if you can. These are known to crack, like mine did. Just saying 1 Quote
