Apparently this B-17 sustained a mid-air collision with a German BF-109, yet managed to fly home and land in this condition without major injuries to any of the crew members.

Impressive. I have driven the odd Elise like that, it needs gaffa tape in the right colour

The waist gunners used the cord from their parachutes to tie the fuselage together. Also when the tailgunner tried to get forward of the damage, the tail wobbled violently, so he remained at his station to act as a stabiliser!

It's impressive stuff!
