Mutley00 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I fitted a replacement exterior door to window seal to STMBOs Elise last night and 2.5 hours later with a bruised and cut wrist the job is done and I must say the elise-shop.com version looks alot better than the Woolies version and a hell of alot cheaper then the original part. I've made my own 'puller' tool which I'll happily lend if anyone else is considering the task. The next task is to replace the rear arch stone protectors which have yellowed, and look horrendous on white cills. Has anyone done this - I've heard rumours of dousing them in soapy water first - is this really necessary or if I put them on dry do I run the risk of air bubbles?
kayj_prod Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Interesting about the window seals. I'm not completely happy with my Woollies job, although they do at least look better than the OE bubbled ones. I removed my OE clear stone protectors some time ago and originally replaced with my own which were cut from vinyl. They are tricky to place because of the curves and, although I sprayed on some soapy water, it wasn't the best job. After my full respray, I bought OE protectors and used more soapy water when fitting them. Enough that I could slide them around and then work at squeedgy-ing the water out. I would say after fitting two sets that there is 0% chance of fitting them well without some soapy water.
scatty Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I think muzza has recently taken off his "yellowish" sill protectors......
Phil S1 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I agree with Keith, you've got no chance of fitting them dry. I replaced mine many years ago, (starting to get ready again now although both sills will need a respray too this time). When I did mine Hangar 111 sent me a small bottle of liquid to spray on as the lubricant, not sure exactly what it was but soapy water should work just as effectively.
Jonathan E Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Clean area and remove all previous sticky glue stuff, mix a few drops of washing up liquid in a small bowl of water and mix well to create "a few" bubbles, liberally apply soapy water to the required area using a sponge, remove backing from new protectors and place in required area, soapy water will allow you to move the protector and enable you to achieve a final position, when your happy with the position carefully use a credit card to squeegee the water out from under protector, work from the centre outwards, having removed as much water as possible leave the new protector to dry out for 24 hours if possible. After having done the waist seals you'll find this job extremely easy! Mentholated spirit is very good for getting rid of the old sticky stuff, and can also double up as a relaxing beverage that you can enjoy whilst admiring your handiwork
Mutley00 Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013 As I thought - its not as simple as replacing the stone guards. Once they were off its apparent there's alot of discolouration & chipping to the cills. Anyone know the paint code for the white cills on an S1 Type 49 - is it B01 Monaco White Dupont ABN9149 N9149 A082B6294F ? Over to you Phil ! Thanks
Mutley00 Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013 ... I know but it doesn't tell me what code my car is!
