Dr H Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Took the car to Gav this morning for a few jobs.Plan was to be off by lunchtime. But you know what happens when you plan..... Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. What should have been a simple change of engine mounts turned into a nightmare.Even though the mounts were supposed to be direct replacements nothing lined up. Then one of the holes on the chassis was too small and had to be drilled out. It took forever! Second job was new gear cables and a new gear linkage which went quicker but still not without a hitch. I didn't realise that the new gear linkage meant the gear selector mech on the box had to be drilled (to take bigger bolts) - and that's no easy job when it's on the car on to op the gearbox. So I ended up leaving just before 5pm. Great service form Gav again, but now i think he's a little bit behind. Sorry to anyone whose car is in for work.
Dr H Posted May 7, 2013 Author Posted May 7, 2013 I bet he was dying to swear and kick things..... :-) Came very close a few times
John FISH Curtis Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Annoy Gav even more...... send him a random parcel in the post.............. eh Scatty
andy111r Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 My car is with Gav, but he's got it for the week so no rush. Should get it back on Saturday all being well.
Dr H Posted May 7, 2013 Author Posted May 7, 2013 Photos, thoughts? All good.Didn't take any pics (except one of the gear cable routing). Will try and take some of the linkage in situ. Gear change is very very good for a cable operated mid engine setup. A definite improvement over previous set up. Mind you it should be! The cost of the linkage, cables and fitting is quite a lot........
MilesH Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Leigh, have you gone for different engine mounts or just replaced like for like?
Dr H Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Leigh, have you gone for different engine mounts or just replaced like for like? Hi Miles I'm using the Link Up brackets which use an Elise gearbox rubber on each side. I had them machined out slightly to take vibratechnics Elise gearbox mounts. I called Vibratechnics to explain what I was planning, They looked at the weight of the Honda engine etc and altered the rubbers slightly to make them Honda specific.Didn't charge any extra either. The brackets I had machined out where a new driver's side one (as the current was very rusty and had a weird rubber in it) and the gearbox side was a second hand one. Both were Link Up ones the same as fitted to my car. But when we came to swap them over they just wouldn't line up properly. We compared the brackets and the mounts and have no idea what's going on. Even though it is all fitted you can see that one of the mounts is being pushed sideways slightly. The plan is to remove the gearbox side and elongate 2 of the holes to help it all line up and relieve the side to side pressure on the mounts. Very stiff mounts (the engine doesn't move a bit) but there are no more vibrations than before - I actually think there may be less!
Martin R Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Leigh, are you ignoring me? I have sent a PM re your tools

Numbnutz Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Lol welcome to my world. I don't think I've bought anything from outside of lotus that didn't need something doing to make it fit ok. (lotus indicators need fixing after they fall out) I had a 'mare of a time with the s n s mounts not lining up correctly and the tolerances were quite a bit out, and they did exactly the same - pushed both mounts outwards quite considerably. I had to work out where it should be based on driveshaft length (yes these we're too long too IMO) and modify the mount holes to suit. I elongated the top holes on the Gbox mount one way (towards the engine) and the lower Gbox holes on the mount the other way. I also had to rework the engine side mount by approx 6-8mm too. (that'll be the OCD creaping in). Incidentally, I reused the rover oem oil filled engine side mount, as I reckon Rover spent a lot of time and effort on this mount to reduce vibrations. The important measurement Leigh is that the big end shaft nut on the Gbox side is about 6-8 mm away from the chassis (some of us file the protruding corner down a bit). But your anti rotation mounts should remain the same and as a way of aligning things up. I would be well interested to see what the vibrations are like now. I think the two linkup style antirotation mounts using the small vitara suspension bushes contribute to most of the vibrations, because if you unbolt one, it almost all goes away - but SC installs need both most definitely. I've rattled on again haven't I?
Mutley00 Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Taking STMBOs Blue Type 49 there on Sunday at about 10.30 ish if anyone is driving by & fancies a chat. First signs of the dreaded hgf. Hope they stay as 'first signs' on the drive down there. Looking forward to meeting Gav - he told he not to get there too early as he's out on the lash on Saturday - great minds etc....
Mutley00 Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Out on a Saturday night at his age!!! :-) How old is he?
