Tool Kit(S)

Well, I was planning to buy the tools chests from Halfords last month when £650 base and top unit were on sale for £300.

I bought the Halfords vouchers online with SELOC discount so that would have been £270.

Went to order and the web offer was withdrawn one day early and I couldn't reserve online with vouchers.

So, I've got £300 of Halfords vouchers sitting in a draw and started thinking about an in-car toolkit (I've, er, "borrowed" a padded toolbag from work for the car kit). I'm sure I can fill that and have some ££ left over to top up the garage kit.

So, what say MLOC :

In-car Toolkit :

Small socket set, ratchet and screwdriver drive

Small set ratchetting spanners ?

2-3 Nut spinners

Allen Keys

a few short screwdrivers

adjustable spanners

pliers, snips

tie-wraps

a few electrical connectors (M / F halves), plus crimp tool

electrical tape

basic electrical meter

small torque wrench ?

Garage Kit - got already :

decent socket set

torque wrench

screwdriver set

various sets spanners, adjustable wrenches, hammers, saws, files, electric test meter

Heat gun, Dremel, various drills, battery screwdrivers

Compression tester

2 jacks, axle stands, Levo Artis ramps, "normal" ramps

So what am I missing ? No plans to go as far as compressor with air tools, but I want to be as well kitted out as I can be.

Not Halfords, but this is the allen key set I've got for my Kart: http://www.screwfix....piece-set/64505

Screwfix also do decent packs of cable ties, like packs of 100 for under £3 for the bigger ones and under £1 for some of the smaller average sizes. Halfords are way over priced and dont do decent sized packs.

If you must go with halfords, then these might be ok: http://www.halfords....tegoryId_255230

Tape: http://www.halfords....tegoryId_255230

Although not sure how long it is. Got a pack of small/average sizes rolls from poundland, all different colours: http://www.poundland...nsulation-tape/

vice

stud extractors

heli coil set

pillar drill

bearing pullers

chisels & punches

Impact driver

bearing drivers

blow lamp

breaker bar

You wont have much change !

edit : a bench grinder.

Cables ties - Got (work)

Halfords - have vouchers and offers on their pro range are hard to beat (never buy at full price though)

If you dont need duct tape at some point you should not own a Lotus smile.png

Got so much of that I didn't bother mentioning it !!! Mostly for the in-car kit, obviously.

Chris, that reminds me i have a Halfords trade card. I think it gives a big discount on tools PM me if you need it and i will pop it in the post smile.png

Edit, i also have bearing pullers, Helicoil set etc etc. No point us all buying something you use once in a Blue moon IMO

True, but in my experience, it's quite common to need something on a Sunday afternoon just as the shops are shutting :-)

Fortunately, the two times this has happened I've already had tools to do the job. Sonya no longer says "why are you buying that - you'll never need them" as both times recently it was her car that got fixed !

Does that mean freedom to spend what I want ?

Got that...

And the parts list...

Just need to drive it enough to warrant actually working on it laugh.gif

In car tool kit should include a magnetic pick up tool for when you drop that 7mm socket into the engine bay! And a good torch :)

Select the sockets & spanners your actually going to need in my case that's 7/8/10/13/15/17 & E8/E10/E12

Rather than a small torque wrench a 15" breaker bar is more usefull for checking wheel bolts ect

Little things as well like spare throttle cable & soft top cable, a couple of bin bags, small £1 size can of WD40, tube of epoxy putty don't take up any space or add weight but can be lifesavers!!!

Price everything up on the wish list on the Halfrauds trade card. For example, their £80 torque wrench is about £43 on the card. Their race spec brake fluid only £7.60 per 500 ml. (£12 normal) I save on WD, bulbs and tools. However, check the normal price for offers, and then the trade price.
