More Trouble With The Bag Of Nails

Hello,

in 3 months, hgf, new battery, 2 alterantors, central locking failure, now the engine management light has come on .grrrrr

maybe a silly question: is there a way to reset it without hooking anything up, just to see if it returns?

Depeding on what caused the light to come on, it will clear after several journeys of the fault not being there anymore. People often get them when they change induction or exhaust, then disapears after a few journeys.

 

The risk you run of not checking it is that if its something major, then the early warning could have helped you fix earlier/cheaper !!

 

A few people on here have the code readers/reset unit, so if someone on here offers you might be able to go to their place and read the code and reset it.

Maybe take the battery off for a couple of hours and see if it resets? Mine had a mardy and refused to rev past 6k so I took the battery off and when I reconnected it it had fixed itself

It could be that it misfired. Mine sometimes does this if it has got wet and is cold. Turning the engine on and off 5 times removes and re sets it.

I think on mine a coil pack is on the way out, but it runs fine warm and I am tight ( see seperatel

threads) so haven't changed it yet.

 

It also did it when I first got it due to a failed inlet manifold gasket causing coolant to leak Ileak in to a cylinder. You can tell if you have this problem though by the small puddle under the car...........

 

Ps come out with us on sunday morning and we will commiserate. ...

got home this afternoon fired it up and engine light still on.

popped the boot to have a look to see if I could spy anything amiss visually, couldn't see anything.

Got back in and fired up again and the light had gone out!!!

Went for a 30 minute blast, no problems.

Thanks for all the advice offered, hopefully will be ok for a couple of days before something else goes wrong.

What joys these things are to own, should know better by now on Elise no.3

If there was a fault however it will still be stored as a code on the ecu so may still be worth having it checked

The mil light will reset itself after 4 or 5 starts as long as the fault has gone. Its no good just turning it on and off 4 or 5 times however. IIRC it has to go from cold to normal operating temperature 4 or 5 times HTH

Martin in my experience if the engine is warm, turning it on and off works without the need to allow it to cool down.
