jonnyfox Posted February 2, 2013 Author Posted February 2, 2013 I'm coping and pasting between here and exiges but this went well this afternoon :-) The front aero catch brackets are now marked up and ready to fit once the clam's off. The holes are cut in the clam and everything's lined up nicely. I have two Specialty Fastner quarter turn catches to fit but I haven't bought those yet. This is as far as I got with fitting the pylon brackets and cutting holes in the clam as I'd left a part at work. I'm actually thinking I'll leave it until the engine is in as the chassis to clam height/ distance without the engine is.....bloody high!
Martin R Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 We appear to be lacking a dyno plot and figures
jonnyfox Posted February 2, 2013 Author Posted February 2, 2013 Yep lol.....it'll be up when the mapping finished, still work to do.
Numbnutz Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 9mm Marine Ply. The front lip above and below I filled, sanded and painted with particular care so it looks pretty good tbh. The shape is tried and tested in a wind tunnel and is ever so slightly based on someone else's . I have a template if you need one cutting, I have a woodwork factory which is handy . I think the sheet was £60 if you need one cutting. Lol no obligation ha ha just an offer if you need one ever. I'm actually doing little bits for various people here and there who've contacted me during the build when having stuff made for myself. Hi Johnny, 'the front lip above and below' - do you mean the leading edge of the ply? or the clam? I have an elise, so I'm going to get a fibre glass elise splitter and cut the bottom off, so I get a nice flat edge to fit something like yours against. It may take a few goes, but once I get the shape right, I'll see if I can get the fill-n piece mounded locally to my exact needs. So your wooden splitter looks great for me (if the undertray and so are the same on a S2 Elise to the Exige) So can the do one for me, I'm happy to wait if you want to see if anyone else wants one cutting too. Did you have the supporting links made too? I was considering vinyl wrapping the splitter in carbon fibre, and putting an edging strip on the leading edge. Was there a reason that you chose marine ply over say Ali sheet?
jonnyfox Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 You can see, only just mind where I've filled the leading edge of the splitter, the grain that is, it has a white powdery look to it. The 211 splitter is marine ply, it's a popular choice. I have a sheet of Ali that extends back past the front wheels (fills the gap under the front wish bones) and is fixed in between the splitter and the crash structure, I'll get one cut for you as I'll be redoing it when the clam goes for painting. The stand offs or supporting links came off my rear wing supports which I'll no longer be using but I need to have some more made to hold the diffuser and pylons to the rear subframe so I can sort those two. Whatever I pay you pay, its no big deal to me, I'm doing it anyway. The standoffs will be the expensive bits they have to be made specially and the heads purchased. I may have spare brackets that hold them in place so you can have those. I'll keep you up to date, if you change your mind I'll have them as spares.
Numbnutz Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Thanks Jonny, What approx length are the support brackets? I have some 2bular PEK bits I've not decided if I want to fit yet. I could just make some new middle support pieces. I was thinking that some trim would be better bonded to the front of the splitter, so if it gets grounded, it my splinter, but you wont see it as the trim will hide the damage - unless you are lying on the floor looking up. Something like this (Linky) Some of the splitters I've seen that have steered me towards this shape are: APR and and this is a very close second, as I like the lift in middle to aid stablity under breaking, not sure about the sides. Its a USA one, a guy puts together, but is pricey. I might try to put a cross of the two together - eventually (Or move to an exige front - but I've a SC project to do first) Full post here. So yours will look like the APR (red car) but with a chopped up elise spliiter too, to the gap filled between the splitter and clam - hopefully it will look good too!
jonnyfox Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 Yea I like that, that's very nice. Actually you will not need the stays, you will have to bolt through existing splitter holes as your oil coolers will be in the way, I've ditched mine for a Laminova setup. This is all very similar to the Reverie splitter I used to have.....there is a thread somewhere on Lotus Talk shows a homemade version also on an Elise, very cool........ This shouldn't be a problem for you.
stockhome Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I like the look of that APR Splitter most s2 elise splitters look awful, that actually looks ok
jonnyfox Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 Here we go. http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f92/apr-side-skirts-starlight-black-exige-87866/ Actually on an Exige but its the same idea right?
Numbnutz Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I haven't got oil coolers at the front. Mine was a S2 111s, (although now it has a K20a2 in it, and I do plan to Laminova it this year), so I've no splitter mounts, just the 3 bolts for the under tray, so I liked the idea of the supports to keep the edges in check. I thought about a shorter version of yours, but with some mounts so that I can bolt on and extend and lower the splitter at the sides, thus leaving the air gap in the middle, and allowing the original size to be used on track, but a more forgiving version on the road, for speed bumps, and getting up my drive (what can't you have omit speed bumps on your sat nav?)
jonnyfox Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 Lol. No probs, the cars off for engine install so when it goes for paint on return I'll measure up. Could be month or two, splitter will be a few weeks, as I make that.
Numbnutz Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I like the look of that APR Splitter most s2 elise splitters look awful, that actually looks ok I really like it too, but put off by postage costs and not sure which version I want, perhaps we could do a group buy, and share the postage costs? Although, I prefer the shape of the APR splitter for the under the Guts Spoiler - it is very similar shape to Jonnies. Also, for now, jonnies is much cheaper if a little thicker, and easier to modify to suit your needs. APR for under the GUTs splitter. (don't mention the side skirts, they will be next on my list, but a bit smaller) PS. These aren't listed on the APR site, but you just ask for Elise splitter or Elise GUTs splitter. Also, the splitter is a D shape, and mounting points are not as good as Jonnies version. For the elise we would need 3 spacers for the middle, and something a bit better that just screwing it to the clam as they do in the states. (APR Site - see custom splitter) A bit of a thread drift - sorry Jonny - but let me know when you have copied the splitter.
jonnyfox Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 No problem................... OK BOYS AND GIRLS ARE YOU READY 231bhp @ 8500rpm Link
