mambosasa Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Hey all. Just wondering, where best to buy replacement headlights for an S1? Mine are rusted, including the metal bits at the back.
kayj_prod Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 I got the whole kit for mine from EliseParts. Silly things like the springs and wing nuts are expensive so you might be able to source them from elsewhere. The bonded mounting rings were pretty grotty on mine too, so I replaced them also. They virtually fell off so brittle was the 'glue'- never mind the rust. (There's a word for when metal starts to 'de-laminate' isn't there?) You're a far more experienced guy than me, but I would suggest doing it with the clam off if you're replacing everything. Just cleaning off the old bonding was a nasty job, but then you'll need to find a way of securing the new mounting points while the tigerseal goes off- that's if you're replacing them of course. Before you take the old lamps out, I'd measure how deep down the threads the wing nuts are so at least you're in the right ball park for adjusting them once its all back together.
mambosasa Posted June 9, 2012 Author Posted June 9, 2012 Nice one Keith. It looks a right old pain to replace, but they need doing.
kayj_prod Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 It wasn't on my list until I removed my front clam winter before last and saw just how bad they were. It's another one of those 'not difficult, but not much fun' jobs. I used a mixture of cutting and Dremmel-ling to get rid of the old fixing goo. Filthy! I'll post some pics when I have a moment. I gave mine a wipe of ACF50 after fitting originally, and again this year when I re-built it all. I figure if I keep doing that, they'll stay nice for a lot longer.
KurtB Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 (There's a word for when metal starts to 'de-laminate' isn't there?) Exfoliation corrosion ;-) Kurt
Phil S1 Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 There is a cheaper option that Bri adopted, using a slightly smaller headlight:- http://forums.seloc.org/viewthread.php?tid=320792 All depends on whether you want to keep it truly original looking or not I guess.
mambosasa Posted June 10, 2012 Author Posted June 10, 2012 It has to be original shape and size. I will see if I could find some cheaper fixings, but other than that, I will buy originals.
