S2 Elise Exige Honda Type R - Mighty Boosh Issue

Yes i'm searching for that new sound....

I recently traded my lovely S1 for an S2 ready converted to linkup Honda...plus all the other things i liked as a bonus...nitrons, ap racing, exige clams, cup scoop etc. i'd love to say i had the money time, patience, skill and toolbox that many of you guys do....but i know my limits :-). getting better though.

Question: i have just gained a new knocking/banging noise coming from the rear left. Getting progressively worse and worse when driving round right handed bends and when under less load/acceleration. Just about got me home from sheffield to barnsley last night. My thoughts are wheel bearing or drive shaft? Wheels are on tight and i can't see any fouling.

Had a quick email chat with The guy i bought it off Steve and [email protected] and both have been great and come back with some good advice pointing to wheel bearings as one option to explore. Drive shafts are new in last 2k, as are engine mounts but other area to look at could be Off side engine mount rubber ,they can be tight and catch on the bolt, i'm told.

I'm posting more for info for others and to allow you to have a giggle at my craphat-ness when it comes to fettling cars, but really appreciate any thoughts too.

Matt

Hi Matt & welcome to MLOC.

I too am a rubbish mechanic so don't feel alone on here!

Sorry I can't offer any advice, but post up some pictures of it when you have a minutewould you? It sounds great.

I would get a specialist to have a look at it, but I don't know any round Barnsley way. Maybe someone else on here will, I know we have a few Sheffield members.

I would think drive shaft again. Honda Elises have problems with the gators spliting or melting due to heat they then loose grease and knacker the joint. It should be easy to spot stick your head under the car and look for black grease type substance. I think Essex motorsport have managed to fix the problem with a specific boot grease combo probably the honda Boys on here will know more details alot of them will probably have had similar issues.

Hi Matt,

I'm guessing you've bought the red S2 Honda Exige (converted elise) - if so you have the Martin Tinker drive shafts I presume which are very strong! As Paul says check for grease at both the inboard and outboard shaft - if it is leaking it will literally spray everywhere so it should be obvious!

If it's not this, jack the car up and check for play in the wheel.

If it is the driveshaft boots feel free to drop me a PM or respond here and I'll let you know the latest stuff that most people seem to be using, or have a look in Mambossa's blog as it is detailed in there :)

I'd also add don't drive it if it is spitting grease you may cause wear to the joint. I forgot about Mambossas blog well worth a read even if you don't intend to do any spannering. I'm more than capable of using a spanner myself put choose not to due to pure laziness :)

Hey guys. Sorry not been on for a while but really chuffed for all advice and responses. Now would be the time to admit it was loose wheel nuts after all that! I swear i finger tight checked , but thats all it was. Since then lots more new sounds; vtec stopping - oil pressure, idler pulley area bearing squeel - the oil for vtec issue seemed to cure that, ROOF RIPPING OFF AT 100 mph plus over woodhead near death experience...and really embarrassing :-)....- some missing roof pin clamps and no washers...roof was fine. It went 60ft in the air, hit the cross winds and landed in some soft bog!

Fantastic trackday at Donington last wednesday...i'll post video later.

All in its tried killing me a couple of times, but i'm absolutely in love with it and all its quirks.

Miles H & Pablo great info. I had the rear diffuser off and noticed the grease spray from one of the shaft gaitors. I'll spend spme time looking into the blog and research then just whittle down to one or two dumb questions. :-)

The missing diffuser clamps were just another little quirk i'm putting right, with some Dzus fasteners too, which is when i noticed.

Russ, good to know about the place in Barugh Green. I'm looking for some local talent to help me in my ownership journey :-)

I know "BarGreen" so i'll drop in.

Hi Mat, hope alls well with the car. If you've had more than hours of drivability you've had more luck than I had with my purchase !!!!!

As this thread has popped up again, I'm also from Barnsley, so just thought I'd say hello. Maybe meet up for a run in the future when I find another car that is.

Hi chaps.

Just re-reading this whilst searching for a solution to my latest problem and noticed Russ's recommendation for

I didn't need to look into it before as the issue was solved but now i have a new problem and P9 sound just the job.

My engine decided it had had enough and tried to rip free of the chassis, and succeeded in doing so where the rear engine mount meets the cross member. I need somewhere local that can strip it down and take a look. Not too much damage but needs some clever bonding/reinforcing and maybe better engine mounts.

So thanks Russ, i'll take a look.

Otherwise the car was fab this year. i fitted a triple pass rad and new fan myself which worked out great and put some Carbone Lorane pads on it. then the engine tried escaping. Ah well. I bought a 2003 Mk4 Golf R32 in the meantime which is great and tries to kill me less often, but i do miss the heart murmur from the lotus. have fun y'all.

Do you mean the rear lower steady bar? The one that goes from the bottom of the subframe to the gearbox.

If so I had this on mine. Make sure that where the mount bolts to the subframe (with two bolts) that a spreader plate has been fitted. Mine did not have a spreader plate for some reason and the bolts were making a bid for freedom by ripping themselves out of the subframe under load. There is a lot of load put onto the subframe at this point. With a new spreader plate fitted along with new bolts there has been no problem since - and mine got used a lot on track.

Assuming you have the link up kit fitted, I wouldn't consider new mounts to be an necessity, but whilst it's off I would check to see the state of the rubber bush and also the mounting points to the gearbox (two bolts). It's amazing what can work loose due to the extra vibration the K20 puts through the car.

Hi Matt where abouts are you based?

Hi Matt where abouts are you based?

Just noticed Barnsley, if it's chassis damage I would take it to Christopher Neil in Northwich if its mounts or any part of the conversion kit I can take a look for you, could you post some pictures?

Thanks Chris

See shots below for more info on the damage. Thanks for comments chaps. Having fun doing it myself.
Yes Miles…the lower steady bar. Seems to be called a few things. See pics.
My thoughts are to reinforce with some alu bar in top side of the subframe channel, patching over the holes and thus giving the bolts something more solid to connect with.
I'm in Barnsley. Chris, take a look at the photos of the sub frame damage and steady bar and my intended approach and let me know if you have a better steady bar or any suggestions. I think the root fuse is the two main engine mounts are not that good. I'm told they are just gear box mounts. They have come loose again as they are not up to the job and let the engine move too much until the steady bar ripped away. You can just see one of the mounts in the top left of one of the engine shots IMG_1204. I want to replace these but i'm not sure which would fit. I was thinking of some vibra technics. The front stay seems fine and is attached to the chassis which is much more solid.
Cheers chaps

Hi, I've looked thru your pictures and it seems there is a spreader plate missing on your rear engine steady. On the "nut" side where the steady bolts thru the rear subframe,

If you require 1 I can send you one out as I'm just making a few this wknd, just send me you hole pitch dimensions.

Can you upload an image of the front steady and 2 engine mounts, the reason I am making some heavy duty ones ATM
