Anyone Know About Carpetfitting? - Is This A Good Price?

Just had a quote to have a carpet (that I'm supplying) fitted for a medium sized lounge, stairs and small landing. I've been quoted £170 to fit it. Does this sound like a fair price as my girlfriend thinks it's expensive as she got her mum and dads bedroom done for £45!

Julie used to work as a account clerk for a carpet store, I've just called her and apparently the going rate for a room your size is (guessing) around £100

Scott, the £170 includes the Stairs and landing, so I suppose £70 isn't to bad for that then? Or do you mean £100 for all of it?

No £100 all in..

 

She say it is usually broken down, something like £35=Stairs, £45=Med room, £20=landing all of which should include grippers etc

 

Are they quoting for under-lay as well for the £170

Does it include removal and disposal of the old one? I think it seems a pretty fair price because stairs are a bugger.

Generally I pay around £2.00 / sq.m including cutting of carpet and underlay and gripper fixing for whole house (if straight forward) but last job was £2.50 due to fireplaces to cut around etc and in the case of a staircase my chap charges £3 per tread.

 

Make sure fitter knows what he is doing - nothing worse than having a decent carpet looking well laid then in 3 months 'waves' start to appear. Also worth paying extra for decent underlay IMO.

 

Edited to say just checked last invoice and had whole house (lounge, 3 beds, staircase done in July) for £112
