Raceface Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 My HGF is being rectified next week; standard 120 spec early S2. Whilst the head/ cambelt is off, is it worth putting some cams in such as these; http://www.ptp-ltd.co.uk/shop/288_140/lotu...0_camshafts.htm . They also do a kit with a 52mm throttle body, here; http://www.ptp-ltd.co.uk/shop/307_224/lotu...rades/rs140.htm Anyone got these & can give me some advice? Could do without the extra expense really at this time, but does seem a good opportunity if worthwhile. I found a thread some time ago (can't find it now) that seemed to indicate that larger valves & 160 spec is the only worthwhile upgrade. Cheers, Mark.
fentuz Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I would, I regret I haven't done it last year... If you were planning to do at some point, doing it now, is more cost effective. I read a thread from heph . He did some works on the head and valves Before After Change the valves angle from 45 to 30º He has now put some of these cams you are looking at: Pink=> Standard engine 31/06/2007 Blue => polished head and reworked valves 18/05/2008 Burgundy => polished head and reworked valves + Pipercam 17/06/2008 Turquoise=> Standard engine 31/06/2007 Red => polished head and reworked valves 18/05/2008 Green => polished head and reworked valves + Pipercam17/06/2008 Drop him an email
Gary ZBJ Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I am not sure if they are used in the above solution, but I have been looking in to a similar upgrade myself, and all indications seem to be that at least one Vernier pulley needs to be used to get the timing perfect when fitting these cams. If you buy the pair of Verniers from PTP, thats another £221.50 on either of the options you are looking at. Gary.
Raceface Posted July 6, 2008 Author Posted July 6, 2008 Thanks for the replies. I don't have the money/ time currently to port the head or enlarge the valves. If I had both, I'd be going to DVA as it's important to get matching specs. Verniers (can get away with just the one seemingly) makes the cost prohibitive. On SELOC, a reliable source has stated "The PTP cams are pretty tame, in my experience they wont give 20BHP or anywhere near". he recommended Pipr 270 or 633 grinds, although the latter looks too extreme for a standard head. At this stage I'll probably stick with a standard rebuild & PRT, unless anyone else has a view?
Stumason10 Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I wouldn't waste your cash at this time, save up and do the dva thing. Cams alone probably won'y help much as the breathing will be limited. My S1 before any mods (well no cat and a Piper X airfilter) made 126Bhp. After DVA, cams, pulleys, porting 52mm throttle body proper mapping and an Emerald now develops 165. inc Big bore manifold. So big investment for 40Bhp! So I doubt cams alone will get you much! If I wasn;t racing in hindsight I would not bother. As in many ways I prefer the car prior to the mods..
mr_lee Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I did exactly that in May. I had my HG done and also went with 52MM TB, Verniers, Cams, hydraulic tappets etc. The difference was amazing......Highly recommend it! PM me if you want to pop down and come out in it. Im always looking for an excuse to have a blat.
Matt C Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Verniers is a must. Forget doing valves, that will only give you 3bhp. How about a VVC aluminium intake manifold? For £50, you will get good gains, and matched with some 270 or 633 cams will show good results. Call DVA, tell him your budget, and see what he recommends...
jhall89 Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 DVA is spot on - I have Piper 270s and two verniers were a must to get timing and lift right. Engine is so smooth now al the way to 7000

Its loads lighter than the ali one and fits under the std s1 engine cover. DVA said not much point changing it until going 180+ So I went for the cheaper lighter option (in true Lotus fashion ) Out of interest, Paul Quinn who's winning the LoTRDC Elise trophy put in a S1 111s engine in his S1 and swapped the Ali intake for a plastic plenum due to the massive weight saving and minimal power effect. We are limited to 170 BHP.. Stu
JonS21 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 IMO you can fit cams at any time so wouldn't bother now. I think that a 4-2-1 manifold would give a good power increase and whilst the head is coming off it would make fitting a doddle saving you alot of labour with the head/manifold studs and getting past the oil filter from underneath as you'll have sufficient room to fit from above.
Raceface Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 I ultimately decided to get it rebuilt standard; primarily due to cost but also not wanting to put potentially mis-matched performance & standard parts on. Thanks for your views & interesting to see different suggestions to the same question.
Raceface Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 It's looking like a good job I decided not to throw some cash at upgrades. Head gasket was leaking into No. 4 cylinder. All put back together with a PRT & seemingly running OK late Wednesday evening, but small CO2 reading in the expansion tank. Thursday morning they fired it up, white smoke everywhere, so it's been taken apart again. I dropped in this morning for an update; big split in the No. 4 liner that will explain the symptom of more white smoke the longer it is left. The head has been stripped completely & sent off for hardness testing, etc just to be absolutely sure. I'm just hoping the head is fine & we've found the problem as I'm looking at about a grand already! Now who was the person who said the only problem with the K series engine was the head gasket & they're not hard/ expensive to sort!!
Raceface Posted July 22, 2008 Author Posted July 22, 2008 I dropped in this morning for an update; big split in the No. 4 liner Good news is the head has passed the hardness testing. Bad news is that there is also a split in the block! Anyone else had this happen? I'm trying to secure a decent block, otherwise a short engine is another £1300 that I just haven't got. I really don't want to risk getting a second hand engine asit ultimately may not be any better than the scrap I've currently got.

Give Martin Hadland a call of REYLAND MOTORSPORT fame. He breaks 'K' for a living and im positive he will have loads of top ones on the shelf. He is only based in Birmingham too so if you want me to pick it up for you no problem.
