Lotus Europa S 2006

The new Lotus Europa S, a Grand Tourer (GT) inspired two-seater will provide Lotus customers with a spectacular sportscar with significantly enhanced levels of touring and cruising capability. It will provide drivers with higher levels of practicality and refinement to complement the simplicity of the Lotus Elise and Exige models.

The Lotus Europa S follows the core Lotus philosophy of performance through light weight enabling this refined and very high performing GT car to weigh just 995 kg. This low weight has been obtained through the clever use of advanced and high tech materials including an extruded and bonded aluminium chassis, composite body panels and a very advanced composite energy absorbing front crash structure.

When compared to the award winning Lotus Elise, the Europa S has a larger boot / luggage compartment and easier cabin access, resulting from lower chassis sides and a higher roof line. Coupled with luxuries such as full leather interior, driver and passenger airbags and carpets all as standard, Lotus has created a "Business Class" driving experience.

However, the Europa S is not a derivative of the Elise or the Exige and has been allocated a separate Lotus type number of Type 121 - the Elise and Exige are both Type 111.

The new mid-engined coupe will deliver high levels of performance from a high torque (263 Nm or 194 lbft at 4200 rpm) 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 149 kW (200 hp or 203 PS) at 5400rpm. The Lotus Europa S achieves around 90% of its maximum torque at only 2000 rpm to give "super car" levels of acceleration from low engine speeds, propelling the car from 0 -96 km/h (60 mph) in around 5.5 seconds, and 160 km/h (100 mph) in around 14 seconds. Maximum speed is approximately 225 km/h (140 mph). Being a Lotus, the Europa S has a phenomenal power to weight ratio of 201 hp / tonne (204 PS / tonne or 6.68 kg / kW).

Tony Shute, Head of Product for at Lotus Cars explains the concept behind the new product: "The Lotus Europa S has allowed Lotus to exploit its extensive capabilities in developing a sophisticated GT car which successfully complements the range of existing cars. The 'Grand Tourer' concept underpinning the Europa S provides the driver with a refined environment, incorporating innovative styling features which do not compromise the superior performance and handling that is synonymous with the Lotus marque."

Describing the Lotus Europa S, Russell Carr, Chief of Design for Lotus says: "The form of a design should reflect the spirit of the car, and the Lotus Europa S is no different. Where the rebellious track-focused personality of the Exige is characterised by shrink-wrapped athletic forms communicating agility and power, the Europa S has a more fluid, understated language reflecting its more sophisticated persona."

The introduction of a GT car, represents both an important and unique addition to the Lotus product range, as Clive Dopson, Managing Director of Lotus Cars, explains: "The launch of the Europa S re-affirms our position as an innovative player in the highly competitive sportscar marketplace. It allows Lotus to extend its product appeal beyond our traditional customer base, and provides yet another demonstration of the key Lotus brand attributes and high levels of quality for which we are particularly proud."

Production of the Lotus Europa S is scheduled to commence in July 2006 at the award winning and world leading Lotus manufacturing facility at the Lotus Headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk, UK. The Europa S will be sold in all markets where the Lotus brand is present, except for the USA and Canada.

Final pricing and full specifications will be announced closer to the on-sale date, but the price is expected to be the region of £33000 (49000 Euros) depending on individual market taxation.

Predicted Performance figures:

    * Target acceleration 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph): 5.5 seconds (approximately)

    * 0 to 160 km/h (100 mph): 14.0 seconds (approximately)

    * Maximum speed: 225 km/h (140mph) (approximately)

Lotus Sport, the motor sport division of Lotus Cars Ltd., has developed two higher

performance versions of the 2006 Model Year Lotus Exige, the Lotus Exige Cup and the Lotus

Exige Cup 240, both developed for track use straight out of the box.

The Lotus Exige Cup cars are based on the new 2006 Model Year Exige and are completely

track ready sports coupés with uprated clutch, sports exhaust, adjustable suspension, uprated

brakes, limited slip differential, switchable traction control, a T45 steel roll-over hoop and Aframe

with harness mounts, fuel and ignition kill switches and a fully plumbed in fire

extinguisher system. An FIA approved 6 point roll cage is a no cost option*.

As the names suggest, the Lotus Exige Cup cars are available with two different engine

variants. The Lotus Exige Cup uses a 192 PS (189hp / 141kW) and 181Nm four cylinder 1.8

litre 2ZZ VVTL-i engine, and the Lotus Exige Cup 240 uses a supercharged and intercooled

high revving 1.8 litre four cylinder engine producing 247 PS (243hp / 181kW) at 8000 rpm and

a torque figure of 236 Nm at 7000 rpm.

Performance from both the variants is phenomenal with the Lotus Exige Cup reaching 100

km/h in 5.2 seconds and 160 km/h in 13.2 seconds, with a top speed of 237 km/h. The Lotus

Exige Cup 240 reaches the 100 km/h mark in around 4.5 seconds and 160 km/h in 11.3

seconds. Top speed is 249 km/h.**

Both versions are built as official factory conversions of new Lotus Exige cars by Lotus Sport

at its facilities at the Group Lotus Headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk, UK. Each car features a

Lotus Sport build plate.

The specifications in more detail:

Apart from the differences in engine performance, the Lotus Exige Cup cars have identical

specification.

Engine

The Lotus Exige Cup uses a 192 PS 2ZZ-GE 1.8 litre VVTL-i (Variable Valve Timing with Lift –

intelligent) engine. This high revving engine is governed to a maximum engine speed of 8500

rpm with a change between two cams (a high speed cam and a low speed cam) at between

5800 rpm and 6200 rpm depending upon the operating conditions of the car.

The supercharged and intercooled engine in the Lotus Exige Cup 240 has a maximum power

output of 247 PS (243 hp / 181 kW) at 8000 rpm and a torque figure of 236 Nm at 7000 rpm.

This vast amount of extra power and torque now available means that the cam change

between the low-speed cam and the high-speed cam now takes place at around 4000 rpm

giving a smooth and linear surge of power from 4000 rpm all the way to the maximum 8300

rpm. The Roots-type Eaton M62 supercharger (with a sealed-for-life internal mechanism

meaning that it does not require the use of the engine's oil) is run from the crankshaft, and has

an integral bypass valve for part load operation. Charge air (air under pressure from the

supercharger) is cooled through an air-to-air intercooler (the cooling air enters via the roof

scoop) before being fed into the engine itself. All charge air ducting has been kept as short as

possible with large diameter pipes making sure that the bends in these ducts are not too tight,

to the benefit of throttle response and efficiency. Four high capacity injectors add additional fuel

under hard acceleration or high speed driving.

A sports-type clutch plate and heavy duty clutch cover transfers the engine power and torque to

the lightweight C64 six-speed gearbox (with an aluminium casing) – with the same perfectly

spaced ratios as the standard Elise 111R and Exige.

A torque-sensing type limited slip differential is fitted as standard and works in harmony with the

Lotus switchable traction control system. The system works though the engine, reducing power

to maintain traction, is active above 8 km/h and operates much more quickly than many brakebased

systems.

An Accusump (engine oil accumulator unit) is included in the whole package as an oil reservoir

backup for extreme track use ensuring that, under these conditions, the engine oil pressure

remains constant.

Wheels and Tyres

Y-type 8-spoke lightweight cast alloy wheels in High Power silver are shod with Lotus specific

Yokohama Advan A048 tyres (rated W and annotated with "LTS") to maximise grip and achieve

the ride and handling targets set by Lotus.

Brakes

The brake system includes cross-drilled and ventilated discs and upgraded sports brake pads

set into the brake calipers (AP Racing on the front and Brembo on the rear), high grade silicon

brake fluid, stainless steel braided brake hoses all linked to the proven Lotus track tuned servoassisted

four-channel ABS system that enhances braking performance and minimising stopping

distance without taking over from the skill of the driver.

Suspension

Suspension is provided by Öhlins springs and two-way adjustable dampers (which have 22

compression and 60 rebound settings and ride height adjustment to reduce the ride height from

130 mm to 120 mm) and an adjustable front anti-roll bar (five settings). Full instructions and

recommended settings are provided to allow customers to tailor the handling characteristics of

the car to their own requirements.

As the Lotus Exige Cup cars are modified for track use, a double shear track control arm brace

is provided to cope with the expected kerb abuse during racing and hard track day driving.

Safety Equipment

The Lotus Exige Cup cars have all the safety equipment that is expected for a track car with 4

point seat belt harnesses (for track use only), two sports seats clad in suede-effect material

and using ProBax technology, a T45 steel roll-over hoop and A-frame with harness mounts, a

mechanical ignition kill switch with cockpit and external activation and a plumbed electrical fire

extinguisher system, again with cockpit and external activation. A FIA approved 6-point roll

cage is a no cost option, race ready for customers wishing to compete in motorsport activities.

Interior

The interior makes use of lightweight and simple race specification materials including

aluminium window winders, acrylic capped door panels and carbon-effect leather door inserts.

Exhaust System

A "Level One" stainless steel sports exhaust is fitted with the bifurcated exhaust pipes exiting

from the centre of the anodised-finish 3-piece rear diffuser. Front driving lamps, twin oil coolers

and air conditioning* complete the equipment package for the Lotus Exige Cup cars.

The Lotus Exige Cup has a Recommended Retail Price of 47,621+VAT in mainland Europe

and CHF83,948 including all taxes in Switzerland.

The Lotus Exige Cup 240 has a Recommended Retail Price of £45,995 in the UK,

56,034+VAT in mainland Europe, and CHF101,026 including all taxes in Switzerland.

* variant and market dependant, please see accompanying specification sheets for full detail.

Significant improvements made across the whole range

The new 2006 model year of the Lotus Elise and Lotus Exige ranges introduces new standard

and optional equipment including lighter weight components, airbags, traction control and

limited slip differential, enhanced trim, adjustable suspension and a new ProBax driver and

passenger seat. A new range of colours has been added, ranging from standard solid shades

to metallic and fashionable lifestyle colours. The total number of colours available is now 21,

excluding the bespoke custom option.

"The Elise has been a huge success, and we are keen to open up more options to the

customer, to offer them the choice of making their Elise more track or touring focussed, as well

as even more individual to themselves" said Trevor Houghton-Berry, Lotus Cars Head of

Commercial Operations.

The improvements for 2006 Model Year

The Elise and Exige ranges have been improved with more options at both ends of the user

scales. Four equipment packs are now available, two containing touring options and two

containing sports options.

The Lotus customer can now order a car that satisfies either their demands for enhanced trim

and more luxury equipment with the Touring Packs or their track and race requirements with

the Sport Packs. Touring and Sport Packs can be combined too.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) rear lights with integrated reflectors are now standard. When

compared to conventional filament bulb lights, the LED brake lights illuminate 0.2 seconds

(two-tenths of a second) quicker, which is equivalent to one Elise length at approximately 70

km/h (approximately 43 mph). The LED rear lights are also 36% lighter (around 0.6 kg total)

than the conventional filament bulb lights.

Other changes include a new window seal fitted around the door that reduces the wind-noise

into the cabin substantially, and a non linear tachometer / rev-counter dial with the unit spacing

between 3000 rpm and 10,000 rpm being greater than the spacing between 0 rpm and 3000

rpm.

For security, central locking is standard across the range.

The new light weight pedal box

A new light weight pedal box with steel pedal arms and extruded aluminium pads is introduced

on the 2006 Model Year Elise and Exige. This new unit has an electronic (drive-by-wire)

throttle for quicker and smoother, more linear engine response, reduced brake pedal ratio and

improved pedal feel for the brake and throttle. All three pedals have less travel and are better

positioned for easier "heel and toe" brake and throttle control on downshifts.

Wheels and tyres

Lotus specific Yokohama Neova AD07 LTS tyres are now fitted to the Elise. These tyres have

been extensively tested and developed by Lotus and Yokohama engineers and provide high

levels of feed back to the driver. The Lotus Exige has the ultra high performance Yokohama

Advan A048 LTS tyres.

ProBax Seats - Standard across the range

Lotus is the first car manufacturer in the world to introduce the "ProBax™" seat. The 2006

Model Year Elise and Exige models both have seats designed by Lotus and specifically

adapted and developed by NuBax, helping to significantly improve the postural position of the

occupant's spine whilst seated. This not only results in an improved level of comfort, but also

has significant medical benefits - maintaining a natural curvature of the spine, and markedly

improving the body's blood flow. Increased blood flow has been shown to enhance response

times, raise alertness levels and reduce the onset of muscle fatigue. Tests on Lotus seats, with

the new ProBax™ technology, have shown an improvement in blood flow of up to thirty per

cent over the pre-2006 Model Year Lotus seat.

Steve Swift, Head of Vehicle Engineering at Lotus, commented, "We carried out extensive

tests with people of various shapes and sizes in Lotus seats with ProBax technology and the

results are extremely good. The seat padding and "cushion" have been specifically designed

by NuBax, enabling us to remove the pre-existing lumbar mechanism. This has helped reduce

weight, vital for Lotus of course, and increase the amount of useable space in the cockpit."

The seats are clad in cloth for the base and the sports pack Exige and Elise, and in leather for

the Elise with the Touring Pack. The Touring Pack Exige is clad in a lightweight stain resistant

suede-effect material.

Touring Packs

The Touring Pack includes electric windows, full leather interior for the Elise in a choice of

colours (Black, Cream, Biscuit and Red) or Black suede effect interior with leather highlights

for the Exige, full carpet set, high specification DAB Radio and CD/MP3 player, and sound and

temperature insulation.

The Super Touring Pack includes the contents of the Touring Pack plus an upgraded interior

trim with driver and passenger airbags, high specification leather covered steering wheel, front

speakers located in the facia top panel, engine start button, trinket tray stowage unit, cup

holder, leather handbrake sleeve, leather handbrake gaiter and gear shift knob and

embroidered logo premium floor mats.

Sports Packs

For both the Elise and the Exige, the Sports Pack includes twin oil coolers and switchable

Lotus Traction Control (LTC) - see later for a full explanation of LTC.

In addition the Elise has sports suspension (uprated Bilstein dampers and stiffer Eibach

Springs) and ultra light weight split-type 7-spoke forged (6J on the front) alloys wheels for use

with the Yokohama Neova AD07 LTS tyres.

The Exige with the Sports Pack already has the sports suspension so in addition, is equipped

with sports seats and a T45 steel roll-over hoop and harness bar for the aftermarket fitment of

four point harnesses for track use only.

The Super Sports Pack includes the contents of the Sports Pack plus ultra lightweight forged

split-type 7-spoke (6.5J front) alloy wheels (saving a massive 1.2 kg of unsprung weight per

corner – compared to the already lightweight Elise and Exige cast wheels), track suspension

with Eibach springs and Bilstein one-way adjustable dampers – with a single adjuster for bump

and rebound – and adjustable ride height), adjustable front anti-roll bar, double shear track

control arm brace to help cope with the expected kerb abuse during hard track day driving.

In addition the Elise with the Super Sports Pack has ultra high performance Yokohama Advan

A048 LTS tyres and a motorsport specification T45 roll-over hoop which when fitted with a

Lotus Sport aftermarket 6-point roll-cage is FIA race approved.

Stand alone options

Lotus Traction Control and Limited Slip Differential

A switchable Lotus Traction Control System (LTC) is available for the first time on the Elise

and Exige for 2006. The LTC works through the engine management system to reduce power

when required to maintain traction. Unlike many traction control systems, LTC has been tuned

to complement the skills of the driver without taking over. The Lotus LTC is active above 5 mph

(8 km/h) and operates much more quickly than many brake based systems. The system can

be deactivated with an illuminated button which is located adjacent to the gear lever. A Torsentype

limited slip differential (LSD) is also available for tight and twisty driving (such as in auto

tests). The LSD is only available if LTC has been specified and is not available by itself.

Air-conditioning

Air-conditioning is available as a cost option (standard in some markets) and weighs in at a

featherweight 15 kg (~33 lbs).

Body Coloured Hard Top

A hard top is available for the Elise for seasonal use.

The New Range of Colours

A new range of colours has been added, ranging from standard solid shades to metallic and

fashionable lifestyle colours. New colours include a vivid aspen white, non metallic British

Racing Green, a hot Chilli Red, a high metallic Solar Yellow and a harmonious Autumn Gold.

The total number of colours now available is 21, excluding the bespoke custom colours.

Engine and Engineering Design

With a VVTL-i engine (Variable Valve Timing and Lift - Intelligent) producing a maximum power

output of 192 PS (189 hp or 141kW) and 181Nm (133.5 lbft or 18.5 kgm) of torque, the Elise

111R sprints to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds (60 mph in 4.9 seconds) and 160km/h (100 mph) in

13.0 seconds before reaching a certified top speed of 241km/h (150 mph).

The Lotus Exige has similar straight line performance to 100 km/h (60 mph), reaches 160 km/h

(100 mph) in 13.2 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 237 km/h (147 mph) – slightly

slower than the Elise due to the higher levels of aerodynamic downforce, giving phenomenal

cornering power, with around 42 kg of downforce at 160 km/h – the equivalent of the weight of

a new-born rhinoceros!

This performance is achieved without compromise to environmental considerations with the

fully Euro IV Emissions Compliant engine helping the Elise to return 8.8 litres/100km (32.1

mpg) on the combined cycle, as well as the very low figure of 208 g/km of CO2 emissions.

FOR CHEVY COBALT SS SUPERCHARGED TIME ATTACK WIN

Led by GM Performance Division and Chevrolet, with engineering collaboration from Lotus

Engineering among others, the Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged finished with the fastest time

overall (1:51) and first in the Front Engine Front Drive (FF) Unlimited Class at the Toyo Tires

Time Attack presented by Super Street and eurotuner magazines on Nov. 8.

Lotus Engineering provided calibration and engineering support to help maximize the

performance of the base supercharged 2.0L ECOTEC engine in the Cobalt SS, which for this

Time Attack competition delivered 283 horsepower at 6840 rpm and 243 lb.-ft. of torque at

4200 rpm without the added nitrous oxide.

"Being able to watch the Cobalt SS Supercharged win the Toyo Tires Time Attack was

amazing after handling the calibration aspect of the supercharged 2.0-liter ECOTEC engine,"

commented Tim Holland, director of Powertrain Engineering at Lotus' USA office in Michigan.

"Time Attack races have historically been dominated by the Japanese, so being a part of the

first domestic team to win this particular event is very rewarding."

The Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged fought off more than 50 competitors driving such

vehicles as the Nissan Skyline, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Ford Mustang and Dodge Neon to

record the fastest time overall. The Ford and Dodge cars were the only other domestic

entries.

Time Attack racing has been popular in Japan for some time, and finally made its way to

America in 2003. Taking cues from the Japanese challenges, Time Attack races feature

street-based cars on DOT-approved tires trying to complete the fastest flying lap time possible

non-automotive engineering skills

Lotus Engineering is widely known for its automotive engineering excellence, but a new "flow

battery" project brings to light the diverse skills base that has been nurtured and refined at its

headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk.

ITI Energy is investing £9.3 million to develop a novel "flow battery" capable of delivering high

power capacity for an extended period of time at low-cost. The R&D project and associated

commercial development, which will be based in Scotland, involves a collaboration of Applied

Intellectual Capital (AIC), Electrochemical Design Associates (EDA) and Lotus Engineering.

Lotus Engineering will act as the engineering consultancy that will support the realisation of

the product by providing key skills to support the project from prototype design through to

product realisation. Plurion Systems Inc., will contribute all of its background IP and know how

to the project to form Plurion Ltd. a new Scottish company to lead the commercialisation of the

technology.

Ian McDonald, Chief Electrical Engineer at Lotus Engineering, commented: "This is a

challenging and exciting project for Lotus Engineering to be involved with. We will be bringing

a number of skills to the project that we have obtained from both the automotive and nonautomotive

engineering fields together to support the production and commercialisation of

alternative energy technologies."

The resulting technology is expected to have a range of key applications, including large scale

power storage for use with renewable power generation. The R&D project will focus on

producing large scale 250kW modules capable of offering up to 8 – 10 hours of continuous

high capacity discharge.

Existing applications of large scale power storage are limited due to the lack of low-cost,

commercially proven technology alternatives to pumped hydro and compressed air systems.

Novel flow battery technology, such as that being developed in this current programme, is key

to improving power supply-demand quality, reliability and efficiency.

David Thomas, Chief Engineer Chassis System Design, commented: "Lotus Engineering has

worked on a number of non-automotive projects in the past and this serves to strengthen our

profile within the non-automotive sector. Our extensive knowledge not only assists with

product concepts and development, but also with the commercialisation of the products."

Steve Clarke, Chief Executive Officer, AIC and Director of Plurion Ltd, said: "We are looking

forward to working with ITI Energy, Scottish Researchers and the many Scottish companies

that can help develop and benefit from the introduction of this technology. We look forward to

growing Plurion Ltd into a world class Scottish-based global enterprise."

Tony Amor, Chief Executive Officer, ITI Energy, said: "The successful development and

commercialisation of this game-changing technology will have enormous implications for

capturing the full potential of Scotland's renewable resources, at the same time as offering

Scotland the opportunity to sell a unique product around the world."

Lotus Engineering is planning to have an engineering presence within Plurion's Scottish

engineering facility. It will also assist with the training of local personnel and technology

transfer into the country that is only an hour's flight away from Lotus' headquarters in Hethel,

Following an impressive victory at the 12-hour Merdeka Millenium Endurance Race at Sepang,

Malaysia in August 2005, the Amprex Motorsports Lotus Sport Exige, developed by a small

team in Lotus Sport at Hethel, received a special invitation to race at Round 9 of the highly

competitive FIA GT championship at the Formula One-standard Zhuhai International Circuit in

southern China.

Merdeka-winner Tengku Djan, and Paul Stockwell, five times Australian champion, led the G2

Category until 3 laps from the end of the three hour race when Tengku Djan Ley pulled into the

pits suffering from severe dehydration and exhaustion caused by soaring temperatures.

The team finished one place behind the eventual class winner, the Belgian pair comprising of

Le Mans driver Vanina Ickx and Bas Leinders in a Vertigo Streiff race car.

Amprex Motorsport Team owner Genji Hashimoto said afterwards: "We had a fuel leak

problem during the whole race. We planned to do only one pit stop, but in fact we had to stop

four times! Anyway we learnt a lot in the FIA GT Championship, it was a good experience for

Tony commented, "The Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb Centenary Festival Meeting provides an excellent platform on which to give our exciting new car its first outing. I look forward to driving on a track which carries such rich motor-sport history and to participate in an event which brings together examples of some of the world's finest racing vehicles."

Paul Matthews, managing director at Footman James and Shelsley Walsh sponsor, said, "As a key supporter of Club Lotus and insurance broker to many classic Lotus owners, we're really looking forward to the unveiling of the new "Circuit Car" at Shelsley."

Production boss Clive Dopson moves on up

Lotus Cars has a new boss. The company has appointed Clive Dopson as managing director of its sports car division. Clive has been manufacturing director since 2000 and will take on the new role overseeing both the manufacturing and the commercial sides of the business. The appointment is effective immediately and is part of a restructuring process at Lotus.

Dopson was the person responsible for overseeing production of the Vauxhall-contracted VX200, a deal that helped cement the future of the company. Along with some £14 million from Proton to pay for the manufacturing facility, of course.

Chief Executive Officer for Group Lotus Kim Ogaard-Nielsen said, "Clive has done a superb job as manufacturing director since 2000, both increasing production volumes to the current record levels and ensuring that the finished cars are built to the highest quality ever to come out of Hethel. Clive, in his new role of managing director, is the right person to lead the business forward."

Clive Dopson said, "We are currently building nearly 5,000 cars a year but in the next few years we will be increasing this figure with the addition of a new range of vehicles including a new mid-engine supercar. I am proud of what we have achieved so far but we have much more work to do to prepare the market for the next generation of Lotus cars."
