Lotus Motorsport has entered the Lotus Evora Cup/GT4 in the "Invitation" category of the European GT4 Championships as part of a year long development programme prior to a full GT4 championship assault in 2011. The GT4 will also be made available as a customer race car to privateer racing teams.

With 360 PS and weighing in at just 1190 kg, nearly 200 kg less than the road going Evora, the new Evora GT4 carries the Lotus Type Number 124 and represents part of Lotus' new strategic GT motorsport programme, further details of which will be announced at the Paris Motor Show on the 30th of September 2010.

Liveried in striking Lotus Motorsport Green with a yellow twin-stripe running down the centre, the Lotus Evora Cup/GT4 brings the iconic colour scheme back once again to sports car racing.

The Evora Cup/GT4 will debut just a matter of hours after Lotus announced the new 350 PS, supercharged Evora S road car, to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. Information about the new Evora S can be found here http://www.grouplotu...s/image/536.pdf.

Already, the Lotus Evora Cup/GT4 has undergone a punishing and extensive development programme with Lotus Racing's F1 driver Jarno Trulli, experienced GT racer Johnny Mowlem and Lotus Motorsport's own Product Manager Gavan Kershaw as part of the development team.

Lotus Motorsport's IndyCar driver Takuma Sato and 1996 Champ Car winner, Jimmy Vasser have also given extensive feedback having driven the Evora Cup/GT4 at the legendary Laguna Seca race circuit in early August, giving Lotus' newest race car a most diverse and comprehensive pedigree.

Accompanying the Evora's debut will be four ultra lightweight Lotus 2-Eleven GT4 race cars, two of which will be entered in the Lotus Motorsport colour scheme and run by NFS Racing Dubai. The other two cars will be run by Team Scuderia Giudici, who currently lead the GT4 "Super Sports" Championship category.

For those who can't make the journey to the Nürburgring in the beautiful Eifel region to see the Evora Cup/GT4 making its first racing appearance, then GT racing fans will have an opportunity to see a second Evora Cup/GT4 in the slightly less hilly surroundings of Norfolk where Lotus Motorsport's Product Manager Gavan Kershaw will be giving demonstration laps during the Snetterton round of the British GT4 Championships also over the weekend of the 28th and 29th of August.

Ahead of the official unveil at the Paris Motor Show on September 30th, Lotus announce the latest evolution of the award winning Evora – the Evora S and Evora IPS (Intelligent Precision Shift) option.

Lotus has taken the award winning* Evora and re-created it with a 350 PS 3.5l V6 engine to create the Evora S. Dany Bahar Lotus' Chief Executive Officer summed it up beautifully when he said: "You don't realise what you were missing from your driving experience until you get behind the wheel of the Evora S."

So apart from the obvious power difference, how is the Evora S different to the standard Evora? It's another question we put to the CEO (given that he's spent a little time behind the wheel, we thought he'd be best placed to answer questions). This is what he said: "It's the next level of Evora experience. It communicates with you better, the suspension setting has been fine tuned for added power and control so it responds even more to direction. It's an instinctual car, the experience is pure."

"We were proud of the Evora but we're even prouder of the Evora S, I feel like it does the true Lotus experience justice. The really great thing is that as we move forward the standard Evora should also benefit from some of these developments."

The Evora S comes with a sport pack as standard featuring a 'sport' button which allows the driver to control throttle response and activate the exhaust by-pass valve. The sport button also raises the instantaneous rev limit and changes the dynamic stability control settings resulting in a total experience change. There are cross-drilled brakes for improved cooling. And here's a heads up for those who buy into the old adage 'you can tell the men from the boys by the size of their toys': the external emotion of the Evora S has been improved with a completely new active exhaust which means that at the push of a button the car sounds just as dramatic as it feels.

Commenting on the Evora S, Lotus Chief Commercial Officer Andreas Prillmann said: "The Evora S is a natural progression for us but more than that, it's a taste of what people can come to expect from the next generation of Lotus cars. It retains core Lotus values such as performance through lightweight but it also gives more than that. It's the perfect combination of top performance, style and comfort. Form doesn't sacrifice function in the case of the Evora S."

So there you have it folks, the next generation of Lotus Evora, the Evora S, set to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show.

But that's not all. In addition to the Evora S, Lotus also presents the IPS (Intelligent Precision Shift) option. This inception of the seven-time-award-winning (who's counting? We are!) Evora sees an automatic 6-speed gearbox with Lotus developed transmission control with a 3.5 l V6 engine delivering 280 PS assuring a superior automatic driving experience.

The IPS version of the Evora allows the driver to switch between manual paddle shift and automatic drive modes. The driver also has the option of selecting 'sport' mode which showcases the Lotus sport driving experience allowing the driver to really feel each gear shift and be in complete control of the transmission.

Commenting on the development Dany Bahar said: "The Evora IPS is set to broaden the appeal of the Evora and reach out to a slightly different market. We hope it will be popular with established automatic locations such as Asia, the Middle East and the US. It's been a long time since Lotus created an automatic and we've spent a great deal of time refining this one to make sure that it perfectly complements the Evora drive experience."

*Evora Awards

Car Magazine – Performance Car of the Year 2009

"There are executive saloons that don't ride this well, super cars that don't turn in so crisply, and surely no car on the planet steers like this. Lotus has managed to transfer everything that we love about the Elise to a bigger, more refined, more grown up platform...It couldn't really be much better to drive - the Evora is nigh-on perfect. A winner on every conceivable level."

Top Gear – Sports car of the Year 2009

"Its pretty, quintessentially British, fast and handles like a dream. Evora takes Lotus to a new place in terms of quality but more importantly delivers a sports car rush that puts other marques to shame."

Evo Magazine – Car of the Year 2009

"It's a magical thing across the ground, deft like an Elise, with exceptional poise and feel. What was telling for me was that, getting into it after any of the other finalists, it was even better than I remembered: a bit smoother, a bit quicker and even sweeter dynamically, too. It's a beguiling car. … A quite brilliant car and worthy winner."

Autocar – Britain's best Driver's Car 2009

Editor's Special Award for Excellence, Group Lotus

"The best here. Brilliant on the track. Nimble, delicate and forgiving. Even better on the road."

iMotor – Most Rated Car of 2008

"It's [Lotus Evora] 'rated' score of 95 per cent is truly impressive and enough to see it beat brilliant machines such as the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 and Nissan GT-R."

Sport Auto: (Readers Choice) Best production sports coupe under €100k - 2nd place

Auto Revue: Sportscar of the Year 2009 - 2nd place

Lotus 125

The Lotus 125 is an exclusive ultra high performance F1™ inspired race-car complete with Cosworth 3.5 litre GP V8 engine producing 640bhp linked to a six-speed semi automatic gearbox with paddle shift.

A bespoke carbon composite with nomex and aluminium core chassis with carbon composite panels contribute to a super light weight of just 560kg resulting in a phenomenal power to weight ratio of nearly 1000 hp per tonne.

Unlike a Formula One car however, an army of technicians and mechanics is not required to start the engine and keep the car running. The start button is all the driver needs to press to get going.

Purchasers of the Lotus 125 will be able to chose from a stylization of a classic Lotus livery, the Exos (explained below) concept design, or as an option, request their own, bespoke livery.

The Exos* Experience by Lotus

The Exos Experience, initiated and operated by Lotus Motorsport, is an elite club. A club in which the limited number of Lotus 125 owner drivers can refine their driving skills and challenge themselves in Formula 1™ inspired technology combined with expert one-to-one advice from former Grand Prix drivers and trainers.

The 'Exos Experience by Lotus' is a new concept for these most exclusive owners and members to improve their race craft and engineering prowess, learn how to set-up a car working with a race engineer, focus on mental and physical fitness and enjoy a driving experience quite literally out-of-this-world. A team of engineers, aerodynamicists, tyre specialists and experts from every field have the specific aim of delivering the optimum performance vehicle. But it is not just the performance of the vehicle which will be optimised, the driver will be brought up to a high level through an F1 level fitness programme including nutrition, strength and fitness training and through driver training from former Lotus F1 drivers to raise the customers' skill levels to F1 standard.

A member of the Exos Experience will be offered an elite concierge service for track based activity including assisting with travel arrangements and transfers to the track enabling the owner to begin their experience as smoothly as possible. The dedicated Lotus Exos concierge will act as a central point of contact for all arrangements and communications covering all official documentation and special requests.

Just as Formula 1™ drivers must prove themselves from week-to-week on Grand Prix tracks around the world, the 'Exos Experience by Lotus' will be held at European circuits with first class facilities, like the famous Paul Ricard Circuit in the south of France, and the Autódromo do Algarve, Portimao in Portugal. Owners will learn to drive in conditions similar to the most demanding race proven circuits in motorsport. With Lotus' sophisticated data-gathering systems they'll also be able to compare lap times with past and present heroes of the sport and debate braking distances - with braking zones of less than 100m, one of the difficult aspects to master - and overlay racing lines, entry and exit speeds and terminal velocity.

Each event will be structured to enable the driver to hone their skills allowing them to develop as a more complete driver and experience a near facsimile of a Grand Prix weekend. They will be advised on all aspects of car and driver performance to ensure that they benefit fully from the ownership of a Lotus 125. Lotus' team of driver coaches, technicians and physiotherapists will be at their service throughout the event: helping to improve race-craft, technical understanding and preparation for the physical strains of driving. The 'Exos Experience by Lotus', will provide a unique opportunity to extend driving skills in a safe but challenging atmosphere.

*Exos = Exosphere - a reference to the earth's outer atmosphere - the exosphere - where space begins and G-forces lessen where atoms are on ballistic trajectories and the lightest gases including atomic oxygen reside.

Summary

The ultimate challenge set by the Exos Experience is to enter an atmosphere shaped by the world of Formula 1™, a place of meticulous attention to detail and precision combined with the upmost efficiency and quality. The experience will immerse the driver in automotive performance and engineering exactitude. They will be surrounded by a team of Lotus experts, each driven in their field, each respected for their ability to make the car/driver package as close to perfection as possible.

Lotus will have its most substantial presence ever during the upcoming Pebble Beach week of activities August 7 – 15 showcasing:

The World Premier of the Lotus 125 ultimate consumer track and race car The North American Premier of the Evora Cup GT4 track and race car The North American Debut of the restyled 2011 Elise SC RGB Edition.

World Premier of all-new Lotus 125 ultimate consumer track and race car

The Lotus 125 will initially be shown in the Lotus Exhibit during the Monterey Motorsports Pre-Reunion weekend Saturday and Sunday, August 7 – 8 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. On Wednesday night, August 11, the Lotus 125 will be displayed at the McCall Motorworks Revival at the Monterey Jet Center along with our current Lotus IndyCar. Lotus IndyCar and former Formula 1TM driver Takuma Sato and 1996 IndyCar champion Jimmy Vasser will also be on hand at the Lotus display. Finally, the Lotus 125 will grace the Concept Car Lawn at The Lodge at Pebble Beach on Saturday afternoon, August 14 and all day Sunday, August 15 during the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Details of the Lotus 125 will be held for its reveals on the Monterey peninsula and Pebble Beach, suffice to say the Lotus 125 is being engineered and developed to provide its select few owners the absolute ultimate in a track driving and racing experience.

North American Premier of the Evora Cup GT4 track and race car

The Evora Cup GT4 race car has been developed by Lotus Motorsport to offer a level of performance that will make it competitive in European GT4 racing. The race car will be eligible to compete in a number of different national and international racing series, with options for endurance and sprint racing.

At the heart of the Evora Cup race car is a new 4.0-liter V6 race engine co- developed with Cosworth that boasts, while still under development, approximately 360HP and a dry sump lubrication system for the high cornering forces encountered during racing. The mid-mounted engine is mated to a 6-speed sequential paddle shift dog gearbox which is designed for international motor sport.

"Performance through lightweight" is a long standing Lotus philosophy and the Evora Cup race car has been pared down to less than 2,645lbs, which translates into a reduction of more than 400lbs over the road-going Evora.

The Evora Cup race car will come with adjustable motorsport dampers, six-piston front brake callipers with two-piece aluminum belled brake discs and all of the relevant FIA compatible motorsport performance and safety equipment prepared to race.

North American Premier of the newly restyled 2011 Elise SC RGB Edition

The Elise revolutionized the sports car market 14 years ago when the small, lightweight and agile 2-seat mid-engine sports car was introduced. By ensuring that the Elise stuck rigidly to Lotus' core value of lightweight performance Lotus was able to produce supercar performance with city car economy and for the 2011 model year, Lotus has introduced a number of changes and improvements to maintain the class leading position of the Elise.

The body of the new 2011 Elise is an evolution of the iconic Elise design, retaining the character and style, while offering a more planted, purposeful stance and a pure, contemporary look that links it to the Evora. As with all Lotus products, the design is an exciting blend of dramatic style and functional efficiency.

With the launch of the special RGB Edition 2011 Elise SC and Exige S, Lotus is celebrating the now legendary work of former Director of Vehicle Engineering Roger George Becker (RGB) who retired in January this year following 44 years of service. Roger has been instrumental in the development of so many Lotus cars over the years, in particular the Evora, the Exige and the recent versions of the Elise. Not only has his extensive knowledge and learning been passed on to the team of talented and skilled engineers, but also his passion for the Lotus brand and heritage has helped Lotus grow into the world class organization that it is today.

The Lotus Exhibits at the Motorsports Pre-Reunion Saturday and Sunday, August 7 – 8 and on Peter Hay Hill at The Lodge at Pebble Beach on Friday through Sunday, August 13 – 15, will mark the first showings of the 2011 Elise SC, in the form of the RGB Edition, in North America.

Notes

The first Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance was held in 1950 in conjunction with the first Pebble Beach Road Races. Racing and automotive art have been in perfect sync on the Monterey peninsula ever since. With this history firmly in place, it's only fitting in the 60th anniversary year of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance that Lotus reveals such an exciting range of world class cars.

Among equestrian sports, polo has no equal. Your connection is immediate. Your experience is unforgettable. We feel the same way about the Lotus Evora.

And what better way for Lotus to celebrate the height of the British summer than with a jolly good polo match? This weekend (Saturday 17th July) sees exactly that as Hurtwood Park Polo Club play host to the prestigious Asprey World Class Cup Polo. The event, proudly sponsored by Lotus (see our clever little equation above), is in aid of a selection of worthwhile causes including His Royal Highness Prince Harry's charity, Sentebale.

As partners of the event, Lotus will be taking the Evora Experience to Hurtwood allowing the great and the good of the British polo set to test their driving skills by "virtually" racing this 3.5ltr V6 vehicle on Playstation's Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. Wannabe race drivers can pit their racing skills against the fast and furious in a bid to rule supreme on the leader board. And if that whets their appetite, the Lotus team will be on hand to discuss test-driving the real thing.

Hurtwood Park Polo Club is the latest destination on Lotus' tour of key cities throughout Europe, the idea behind the interactive venture is quite simple: To allow people to experience the new Lotus Evora firsthand before testing their driving skills by booking an exclusive test drive or track experience. Can't make the polo this weekend? No problem, after Hurtwood Lotus moves on to the delights of the CLA Game Fair in Warwickshire (23rd-25th July) the world's biggest country sports and outdoor pursuits event.

Next week Lotus takes a new twist on the old cult classic film, The Italian Job, in the run up to the Goodwood Festival of Speed

In a stroke of genius the organisers of the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed decided on a theme of 'Viva Veloce' or 'The Passion for Speed' for the event this year (2-4th July). Capitalising on the momentum of such a flash of inspiration (and quite frankly we're always looking for any excuse to get out and about) Lotus jumped on the bandwagon and decided to put the press to work with a convoy of Evoras driving from Italy (Turin) to England (Goodwood) – the reverse journey to that of Charlie Croker and his cronies and hopefully without the added drama of bank robbery and literal cliff-hanger!

The Italian Job inspired roadtrip begins on Thursday 1st July 2010 and sees the specially liveried Lotus Evoras (red, white and green a la il tricolore naturally) arrive at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday 3rd of July, where the plucky and lucky journalists (hopefully not too tired from their trip) will have the chance to take part in everything Lotus has on offer at the Festival including an exclusive interview with one of the Lotus Racing's F1 drivers.

Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, the participants involved in the trip will be providing daily blog updates of their Evora based escapades. Lotus drivers in the countries that the roadtrip encounters (Italy, Switzerland, France and England) are invited to join in the striking procession.

Goodwood Festival of Speed founder the Earl of March said: "I am delighted that Lotus is taking this year's Festival theme to heart and bringing it to life in such a fun and original way."

Lotus fans planning on attending Goodwood and keen to get in on the action will be able to get a flavour of F1 with the classic Formula 1 Lotus Type 49 Grand Prix winning car raced by the legendary Jim Clark on the stand along with appearances from Lotus Racing F1 drivers and former F1 team mechanics.

F1 not your thing? No problem, Lotus has plenty more on offer including a range of road cars on display some of which fans won't have seen since their preview in Geneva earlier this year including the aesthetically pleasing Carbon Evora and the Evora Hybrid Concept car.

A collaboration between Lotus Engineering and Fagor Ederlan will develop the Lotus Range Extender Engine for series production.

Lotus Engineering, the automotive consultancy division of Lotus Cars Limited, and Fagor Ederlan, part of the Mondragon Corporation Cooperativa, the biggest co-operative group in the world, have completed a joint technical and market study analysing the best route to production for the Lotus Range Extender Engine. The study has culminated with an agreement for Lotus Engineering to develop the engine for series production and sale by Fagor Ederlan for the global automotive market.

The three-cylinder, 1.2 litre Range Extender engine from Lotus Engineering has been designed specifically for series hybrid vehicles and the production engine will offer a fast route to market for manufacturers wanting to source a dedicated range extender. The high efficiency, low mass design will enable low emissions vehicles to be produced cost effectively across a wide range of hybrid vehicle applications, as already demonstrated in both the Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid and the PROTON Emas concepts, which were shown at the 80th International Geneva Motor Show this year.

Now's your chance!

Roger Becker, former Director of Vehicle Engineering for Lotus is celebrated with a series of special edition versions of the final run of European specification 1.8 litre Elise and Exige sportscars.

In celebration of his now legendary input over the years, Roger Becker (RGB) who retired in January following 44 years of service, will have a series of Lotus Elise and Lotus Exige sports cars in bespoke RGB Special Edition specification produced and set for release from September 2010.

The Elise SC and Exige S RGB Special Editions will both be specified to a high level with Sports and Touring packs as standard. The Elise SC RGB Special Edition has a supercharged 217 hp (220 ps) 1.8 litre engine which blesses it with a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds (0-100kmh in 4.6 seconds). The Lotus Exige S RGB Special Edition uses the range topping 257 (260 ps) supercharged and intercooled 1.8 litre engine which endows it with a 0-60 mph in around 4 seconds and a phenomenal aerodynamic downforce figure of 92.5 lbs (42 kg) at 100 mph (160 kmh).

Roger Becker said, "I am honoured that Lotus has named these two special editions after me, especially as it allows me to offer the customer my favourite specifications. The past 44 years have been an incredible journey and I'm looking forward to watching Lotus progress in the future, I have no doubt that the company will continue to go from strength to strength."

Both the Elise SC and the Exige S RGB Special Editions are available in four colours, Aspen White, Starlight Black, Solar Yellow & Carbon Grey and each one is identified by a numbered interior plaque, Roger Becker's signature on the side of the bodywork and special monochrome Lotus nose badge.

At the end of 2010, production of the European versions of the Elise R and SC and the Exige S and Cup 260, which use the 1.8 litre 2ZZ VVTL-i engines supplied by Toyota, will finish due to changes in legislation and the introduction of "Euro 5" Type Approval which does not apply to these cars. Production of the Elise R and SC and the Exige S and Cup 260 will, however, continue for all other markets.

Andreas Prillmann, Chief Commercial Officer for Lotus Cars said, "I would like to thank Roger for his dedication to Lotus It's fitting that an exclusive number of the last of the 1.8 litre Elises and Exiges for Europe are dedicated to Roger, who has been instrumental in the development of so many Lotus cars over the years, in particularly the Evora, the Exige and the recent versions of the Elise. Not only has his extensive knowledge and learning been passed on to our team of talented and skilled engineers, but also his passion for the Lotus brand and heritage has helped Lotus grow into the world class organisation that it is today."

The new, super efficient 2011 Model Year Lotus Elise, introduced to the market earlier this year, will continue for all markets where it is sold including Europe.

City Hall, London, UK, 7th June, 2010 – Intelligent Energy, Lotus Engineering, LTI Vehicles and TRW Conekt, with funding from the UK Government's Technology Strategy Board, today unveiled a full performance, zero-emissions Fuel Cell Hybrid London taxi.

While the taxi looks and drives like an iconic London black cab, the Fuel Cell Black Cab is powered by an Intelligent Energy hydrogen fuel cell system hybridised with lithium polymer batteries; allowing the vehicle to operate for a full day without the need for refuelling. Capable of achieving a top speed of over 80 mph, it has a range of more than 250 miles on a full tank of hydrogen, refuels in about 5 minutes and produces no emissions other than water vapour.

London's Deputy Mayor for Policing and Chair of the London Hydrogen Partnership, Kit Malthouse, who unveiled the zero emissions fuel cell hybrid taxi at London's City Hall, said, "The black cab is a much loved London icon, but it is also a significant source of pollution especially in the centre of the city. This prototype Fuel Cell Black Cab, which emits only water from its tailpipe, is an exciting glimpse of how hydrogen technology could soon play a vital role in cleaning up air quality for urban dwellers."

Later this year, Transport for London will start operating five hydrogen-fuel cell buses, and the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has committed to working with manufacturers to make all taxis operating in London zero tail-pipe emissions by 2020.

For the Fuel Cell Black Cab unveiled at City Hall, Lotus Engineering has packaged the full propulsion system including the fuel cell engine and has designed control systems to optimise performance of both the fuel cells and electric drive systems. TRW Conekt led the safety analysis programme, including braking and steering systems, and LTI has provided donor vehicles to assist with the structural modifications to the chassis of the taxis.

The first hackney-carriage licences date from 1662 and apply literally to horse-drawn carriages that operated as vehicles for hire. The black cab that most people associate with London taxis was the Austin FX4, introduced in 1959. The model, with many modifications over the years, remained in production until 1997, making it one of the longest running production vehicles in history. The Intelligent Energy fuel cell system has been integrated into the most recent LTI TX4 design, and fits in to the vehicle without intrusion into its internal or luggage space.

"The Fuel Cell Black Cab is a hackney-carriage fit for the 21st Century and its ever larger urban centres, where the reclamation of good air quality matters hugely to all of us. The LTI TX4 is an internationally recognised and iconic symbol of London, and to put an entirely new fuel cell hybrid electric zero emissions 'engine' into the existing vehicle design in such a short amount of time and still deliver performance, refuelling speeds and range, is a fantastic achievement for all the companies involved," explained Dr. Henri Winand, CEO at Intelligent Energy. "We now look towards the introduction of the first fleet of these vehicles into London for 2012. The launch today at City Hall demonstrates that we are well on course to achieving this goal."

The Nürburg-based race school has taken delivery of six brand-new Lotus Exige S cars for use in its highly acclaimed Nordschleife courses. Customers from all over the world will be able to 'arrive and drive' a track-prepared Exige with instruction, insurance and fuel all included in one price.

"Lotus has a fantastic history here at the Nürburgring," says Ron Simons, Chief Instructor and Company Director. "Some of the marque's most famous victories were fought over the old Nordschleife. Now customers from all over the world can learn for themselves why the perfect balance of power and light weight of Lotuses makes them so capable and so much fun."

Roger Becker, Director of Vehicle Engineering for Group Lotus, said "the Lotus Exige is the perfect sportscar to learn the famous and challenging Nordschleife circuit. The Exige S is a phenomenal tool that flatters and encourages the less experienced driver and challenges those with higher skill levels with a perfect combination of safe and secure handling, unparalleled performance and peerless driver feedback to give a brilliantly rewarding driving experience."

RSR has over 10 years of experience at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and are excited to be producing a program working in conjunction with Lotus Cars.

Courses are expected to retail for around €945 per person, based on two drivers sharing one car for 6-hours of tracktime. Courses begin with RSR's famous Convoy Training, where an instructor leads small groups over the course on the correct line.

The 21km Nürburgring Nordschleife is not only the world's longest permanent race circuit, but also one of the world's toughest. With around 170 individual corners and a drop and rise of 1000ft every single lap, it's one of the most challenging tracks ever devised. As such radios are used to communicate with each driver in the convoy, pointing out all the visual cues used to position the car on the ideal line. After convoy training is finished, instructors take the passenger seat and provide personal training for each driver. The day finishes with a high-speed taxi lap, in which an experienced instructor shows the student just what the car is capable of.

As well as August 10th and 28th, dates are also being set in September, October and the first week of November. There will be also be two day packages including the Nordschleife, a road tour through the Eifel and Ardennes mountains and ending with at the 7km Spa Francorchamps circuit.

Aimed at both experienced drivers and newcomers to the sport, Lotus Cup Europe features four classes divided between Lotus's successful trackday warrior, the 2- Eleven, Exige and Production classes, plus an Invitation class for anything else Elise-based such as the 340R. As you would expect, last years' overall winner Scott Cruickshank (Aberdeen, Scotland) competed in the 2-Eleven class.

With many newcomers to Lotus Cup Europe this year, the 2-Eleven class has been boosted to no less than 18 cars, including last years top driver Scott Cruickshank. There are a number of new drivers to the 2-Eleven class including Frank Berger who was looking to impress as he made his LCE debut at his home circuit.

The Exige class too has a record entry of 10 cars and the Brothers Rasse (John & Gregory) will no doubt be to the fore again.

The Production class is less predictable, but French, German and Austrian competitors will join the usual band of competitors from the British-based Elise Trophy for the first time. James Knight was the most consistent driver in 2009 and no doubt will be looking to repeat his success.

The Invitation too welcomes new arrivals, with Moritz Hannappel and Sebastian Schwertner looking forward to the challenge.

The Nurburgring race was the first of seven events in five countries on the 2010 Lotus Cup Europe Calendar, and with average grids of 40 cars expected at all rounds, action-packed racing is assured!

Lotus Engineering has conducted a study to develop a commercially viable mass reduction strategy for mainstream passenger vehicles. This study, released by the International Council on Clean Transportation, focused on the use of lightweight materials and efficient design and demonstrated substantial mass savings. When compared with a benchmark Toyota Venza crossover utility vehicle, a 38% reduction in vehicle mass, excluding powertrain, can be achieved for only a 3% increase in component costs using engineering techniques and technologies viable for mainstream production programmes by 2020. The 2020 vehicle architecture utilises a mix of stronger and lighter weight materials, a high degree of component integration and advanced joining and assembly methodologies.

Based on U.S. Department of Energy estimates, a total vehicle mass reduction of 33% including powertrain, as demonstrated on the 2020 passenger car model, results in a 23% reduction in fuel consumption. This study highlights how automotive manufacturers can adopt the Lotus philosophy of performance through light weight.

Dr Robert Hentschel, Director of Lotus Engineering said: "Lighter vehicles are cleaner and more efficient. That philosophy has always been core to Lotus' approach to vehicle engineering and is now more relevant than ever. Lightweight Architectures and Efficient Performance are just two of our core competencies and we are delighted to have completed this study with input from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to provide direction for future CO2 reductions. We believe that this approach will be commonplace in the industry for the future design of vehicles."

The study investigated scenarios for two distinct vehicle architectures appropriate for production in 2017 and 2020. The near-term scenario is based on applying industry leading mass reducing technologies, improved materials and component integration and would be assembled using existing facilities. The mass reduction for this nearer term vehicle, excluding powertrain, is 21% with an estimated cost saving of 2%.

A benchmark Toyota Venza was disassembled, analysed and weighed to develop a bill of materials and understand component masses. In developing the two low mass concepts, Lotus Engineering employed a total vehicle mass reduction strategy utilising efficient design, component integration, materials selection, manufacturing and assembly. All key interior and exterior dimensions and volumes were retained for both models and the vehicles were packaged to accommodate key safety and structural dimensional and quality targets. The new vehicles retain the vision, sight line, comfort and occupant package of the benchmarked Toyota Venza.

Darren Somerset, Chief Executive Officer of Lotus Engineering Incorporated, Lotus' North American engineering division which led the study, said "A highly efficient total vehicle system level architecture was achieved by developing well integrated sub-systems and components, innovative use of materials and process and the application of advanced analytical techniques. Lotus Engineering is at the forefront of the automotive industry's drive for the reduction in CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions and this study showcases Lotus Engineering's expertise and outlines a clear roadmap to cost effective mass efficient vehicle technologies."

Some Things Lotus CAN Control

Creativity Control: Anyone familiar with our brand will know that Lotus don't 'do' ordinary cars. We innovate and create unique, exciting and exceptionally light and high-performing sports cars.

Carbon Control: One for the number crunchers. Extensive research has shown that the new Lotus Elise releases carbon emissions of 149g/km, this figure represents the lowest for a high-performance sports car in this category. So who says you can't be carbon conscious without compromising on technology, style and most importantly, performance?

Collision Control: A Lotus driver has the best braking and handling at their disposal (we're not bragging, apparently we're the industry's benchmark) and we all know that the best way to avoid a collision is to avoid being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Our incredibly agile and responsive cars mean that a Lotus can be out of trouble before it gets into trouble.

One Big Thing Lotus CAN'T Control

Climate Control: In one word: Eyjafjallajökull (pronounced ɛɪja│fjatla│jœ│kʏtl, if you're interested).

No one can ignore (but perhaps some clever boffins could have predicted) the current chaos caused by the world's most unpronounceable volcano. Even we were affected this week as we set about inviting the first wave of media to drive the new 2011 Lotus Elise. Those lovely European journalists all set to experience the sheer joy of driving our latest offering this week at a specially organised event in Surrey were denied this great opportunity due to our fuming Icelandic friend.

They didn't get to experience the new aerodynamics which has seen the Cd improve by 4% or the pleasure of the new super efficient 1.6 litre 4 cylinder VVT-I engine, which is 200cc smaller than the engine in the outgoing Lotus Elise S yet produces the same power! Yes, it's that clever!

But it's not all doom and gloom for our stranded and frustrated journalist friends, every (ash)cloud has its silver lining, once the dust settles there will be plenty of organised drive activities on offer! So, if like them you fancy pushing your fun threshold to its maximum, Lotus' latest innovation is just the remedy. Please call us for more information.

P.S.: Hard to believe: For the amount of 150,000 tons of CO2 Eyjafjallajökull is emitting every day, we could drive the new Elise 25,000 times around the equator.

Naturally you couldn't resist clicking through! So, what does 149 mean exactly? And why are we so happy about it? Read on and all will become clear (that's a clue by the way!)....

We are delighted to announce that the new 2011 Lotus Elise has just been certified with an outstandingly low emissions figure of 149g of CO2 / km which represents a reduction of 16% over the previous Lotus Elise S.

This means that the Elise has the lowest CO2 for its performance level for any gasoline sportscar in the world.

Not only does this low emissions figure give a greener drive with less guilt but it also relates directly to fuel consumption with the new Elise turning in an impressive figure of 56.1 mpg (5.04 litres per 100 km) extra urban. This means that the Lotus Elise could travel a colossal 500 miles (800 km) on one tank of fuel – the equivalent of Paris to Marseille or London to Aberdeen.*

Fed up with the figures yet? Stay with us, there's more.

These world leading emissions and economy figures are a direct result of Lotus' commitment to its core values of performance through light weight and efficiency. The Elise weighs just 876 kg and to put this weight into perspective, a nameless convertible sportscar from Stuttgart (Germany) weighs in at 1335 kg.

Aerodynamics have been improved by 4% and a new super efficient, 1.6 litre 4 cylinder VVT-I engine has been installed which is 200 cc smaller than the engine in the outgoing Lotus Elise S and produces the same power. And the performance figures speak for themselves: 0-60 mp/h in 6.0 seconds and 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds!

Are you ready to celebrate with us?

order to drive down fuel consumption (in the form of CO2 emission) while maintaining or

improving emissions of regulated primary pollutants. Some of these technologies (e.g.

gasoline direct injection) have been available for some time and have moved into a second

generation [1,2,3]; others (e.g. fully variable valve trains) have only been available as

research systems or have been announced with no firm future marketplace introduction

[4,5,6]. However, because of the possible synergies between concepts, these systems have

an imperative behind them to develop fully and become commonplace.
