Lotus adopts the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy scheme to Work Out at Work and is supported by TEAM GB Olympic medal winner Anthony Ogogo

Together with Team GB Olympic medal winner Anthony Ogogo, Lotus staff took to the Hethel test track in a bid to improve their fitness, thanks to a new scheme from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Lotus has chosen to support the scheme as it fits very much into the company’s own Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The Work out at Work day initiative encourages employees to assess their usual working day with the aim to include more physical activity, no matter how small. The benefits for the smallest of changes can be huge for one’s well-being and general health. Approximately, half of Lotus’ 1000 staff donned their running shoes and joined Lowestoft-born Olympian Anthony Ogogo on the 2.2 mile test track for a brisk walk over the lunch period. Some chose to walk, others to jog and in true Lotus spirit some sought to take the chequered flag - on roller blades! Also on hand was chartered physiotherapist Richard Morford and personal trainer Duane Smith offering fitness advice alongside Lotus’ own personnel that advocate the company’s commitment to occupational health.

Lotus Occupational Health Nurse, Lizzy Hampson: ‘Busy schedules have meant staff are increasingly not taking their lunch break and staying put at their desks. Whilst we recognise this is everyone’s choice it is our intention to advocate balance in the workday and encourage staff to go have a walk, take a break and rejuvenate. It’s in everyone’s interest to be fit and healthy and this is very much part of the company’s commitment to staff under the Lotus CSR program.’

Chartered Physiotherapist Richard Morford: “We know that healthy employees are more productive, have higher morale and are less likely to experience ailments making them unable to work. Health and fitness is critical to not only physical health but is important for mental health also. It’s great to see organisations such as Lotus adopting this worthwhile CSR initiative and setting the precedent for the corporate community.

Olympic Medal Winner, Anthony Agogo: “This is certainly a brilliant initiative and great that Lotus have adopted it and made it part of their working day. Fitness is so important, after all, it’s what my career has been based on. When I go into the ring, the biggest threat I can give my opponent is if I am fitter, and consequently stronger than the opposition, to do that I have to ensure my body gets the exercise it needs to deliver the performance I need to win. Everyone wins through exercise.”

The Hethel workforce certainly appeared enamoured with the scheme. ‘It’s a brilliant way to spend your lunchtime and if your work pals are taking part you feel inclined to join in’ said one. ‘Certainly gets you thinking about your fitness in general and how to de-stress and relax a bit’ commented another.

The Work Out at Work Scheme will see thousands of employees across the country taking part in activities to get them moving.

This summer the critically acclaimed Lotus Exige S loses its roof and gains a new character. As capable as its coupé counterpart, the Exige S Roadster retains all the intent of a race-bred sports car but also possesses the poise of a sleek convertible.

Sitting alongside the Exige S, Exige Cup and Exige Cup R, the Exige S Roadster completes the Exige line-up and enhances the track focussed collection by providing a new facet to the range. Powered by the same 3.5L V6 as the coupé variants and weighing in at 10kg less than the Exige S at 1166kg, none of the exhilarating performance of the phenomenal Exige range is compromised, yet the driver is only ‘two clicks and a roll’ away from cruising in open-top style thanks to the lightweight, factory-fitted soft top.

Achieving 0-60 mph from standing in 3.8 seconds, delivering 345 hp at 7000 rpm (350 PS) and 295 lb ft of torque at 4500 rpm, the Roadster matches the coupé’s mechanical performance and retains its £52,900 price tag, but style takes an understated approach having shed its rear wing and front splitter to maximise airflow over its sleek silhouette.

The introduction of the new Exige to the Lotus product range has provided a new opportunity for the Norfolk based sports car brand to expand and strengthen its production resource, generating new jobs and opportunities for skilled individuals who want to be part of the Lotus story.

The Exige S Roadster is the perfect car for a ‘joy’ ride; what better way is there to enjoy the panoramic views of the world’s most beautiful roads than when they are enhanced by the purposeful roar of a V6 soundtrack and to feel the wind in your hair and sun on your skin?

Exige S Roadster is now available to order with the full list of options and extras as available on the Exige S coupé, with the extra interior option of quilted leather seats and door trim details.

Lotus Engineering receives the Award for the Evora 414E Range Extender Hybrid

The Lotus Evora 414E Range Extender Hybrid was chosen by the Editors of the SAE’s Automotive Engineering International Magazine, for its design and engineering innovation, uniqueness, potential for “real-world” production application, and potential benefit for industry customers and end user.

Kevin Jost, Editorial Director of Automotive Engineering International Magazine said, “The Lotus Evora 414E was chosen for the AEI Tech Award for its unique combination of a multimode virtual seven-speed shift schemel, torque-vectoring stability control, and energy and power management optimization schemes.”

Aslam Farikullah, Chief Operating Officer for Lotus said, “In one high tech vehicle, the Lotus Evora 414E encompasses all the key areas of Lotus Engineering’s expertise, and doesn’t just demonstrate the high level of technological advancements in our products, but is also relevant to the motor industry and applicable to the long term future of the car. We are delighted that the SAE have recognised this with such an important and prestigious award.”

Every year, the editors of Automotive Engineering International select, from among SAE World Congress exhibitors, the technologies they judge worthy of an AEI SAE 2013 Tech Award. Judging is based on level of design and engineering innovation, uniqueness, potential for “real world” production application, and potential benefit for industry customers and end user. The SAE 2013 World Congress will be held this year from April 16 to 18 in Detroit; and other highlights of the event are viewable online at www.sae.org/mags/aei/saewc.

The Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid concept showcases new developments in plug-in, range-extended electric propulsion, new electronic technologies to enhance driver involvement and the adaptability of the Lotus Versatile Vehicle Architecture (VVA).

The range extended electric drive of the Evora 414E Hybrid consists of two electric motors driving each of the rear wheels independently via single speed geartrain, integrated into one common transmission housing, thus enabling torque vectoring for stability control of the vehicle. Electrical power is stored in a lithium polymer battery pack which is optimised for energy density, efficiency and high power demand and mounted in the centre of the vehicle for stability and safety. Additional range is provided by the Lotus Range Extender engine, an optimised 1.2 litre, three- cylinder engine, designed specifically for series hybrid vehicles. The drivetrain is designed to combine astonishing performance with efficient, low emissions driving.

Driver involvement is enhanced by the incorporation of HALOsonic Internal and External Electronic Sound Synthesis technologies from Lotus and HARMAN, which provide sound contouring within the cabin and improve pedestrian safety outside the vehicle. Integrated with the HALOsonic technology, the Evora 414E Hybrid also showcases a brand new technology from Lotus Engineering, a sports mode that simulates a 7-speed, paddle shift transmission that combines exceptional driver involvement for a hybrid sports car and optimised energy recuperation.

The Evora 414E Hybrid has been designed to highlight Lotus’ innovative electric and hybrid vehicle technology without distracting from the pure sportscar character of the Evora.

0-60 mph / 97 km/h in around 4 seconds

The long awaited movie adaptation of ‘The Host’ written by Stephanie Myer, author of ‘The Twilight Saga’ premiered in LA on 19th March and will be on international release from March 22nd at which time big screens all over the world will be alight with a fleet of awesome looking Lotus Evoras.

The movie follows the plight of ‘Melanie’ played by Irish actress Saoirse Ronan as she battles an unforeseen enemy lead by ‘Seeker’ played by Hollywood favourite Diane Kruger. A romantic action-adventure which sees Melanie join resistance fighters as they battle for the survival of the human race, 'The Host' is a tale of spirit, individuality and determination - traits that echo Lotus’ own character.

Negotiations for a “hero car for ‘Lead Seeker’" started in early October 2011 and by the end of the month Lotus had agreed to provide a number of Evoras to the project directed by its screenwriter Andrew Niccol who was looking for an extraordinary car for the role. The Lotus Evora was chosen for its stunning and futuristic aesthetic, which when juxtaposed with contemporary locations, gives a truly alien element to the Sci-Fi movie.

Lotus has a strong cinematic history; with appearances in two ‘Bond’ films - in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ out-racing a motorbike and helicopter before taking to the sea as the iconic submersible Esprit, and in a cool role in ‘For Your Eyes Only’; “cornering like its on rails” with Julia Roberts at the wheel in ‘Pretty Woman’; and taking part in an adrenaline fuelled chase sequence along the San Francisco coastline with Sharon Stone in ‘Basic Instinct’.

No doubt the dynamic driving scenes featured in ‘The Host’ will take their place alongside these exciting movie moments as stand out performances for Lotus.

Earlier this year, Lotus was in a contractual dispute which was resolved amicably a number of weeks ago. However the High Court process meant that the matter was still shown on the High Court website, as there was a hearing scheduled for today. This is what appears to have been seen and misunderstood.

The case was only listed for the proceedings to be disposed of. The claim has now been dismissed with no order as to costs.

Group Lotus Plc demonstrated its support of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund UK (NMCF UK) last night at a charitable event held at the Lotus Originals flagship store in London’s Regent Street.

The event, attended by famous supporters of the charity saw Lotus making a financial donation from the income of purchases made on the evening to the charity.

Kathi Scott, Executive Director, NMCF UK said “A huge thank you to Lotus for the incredible support and for the funds donated this evening. The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund UK is proud of the positive changes that have been made to the lives of hundreds of thousands of children in the past 18 years through its important work. It is for this reason we are proud to be working with Lotus Cars, an inspirational British brand whose values of passion, individuality and gritty determination we share at NMCF UK. We are so grateful to everyone at Lotus Cars that has made this evening possible.”

The fund which was set up in 1994 by Nelson Mandela himself is now well established in South and Southern Africa, working with communities to help them to develop not only economic strength, but the spirit of caring that enables them to take care of the most vulnerable children among them.

Their latest project is to build a dedicated children’s hospital in Johannesburg. It will be called The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, and has been described by Mr Mandela as “a vital necessity which cannot be delayed”.

Hot on the heels of victories at Magione and Imola, Stefano D'Aste and co-driver, Miriam Marchetti, recorded another win this weekend in their Lotus Exige GT Cup in treacherously wet conditions in the Varano Rally Experience, (race two of the CSAI Rally) consisting five special stages on the Autodromo Riccardo Paletti.

Stefano D'Aste was delighted with the result: "I’m really very happy. The conditions on Saturday were extremely difficult due to the waterlogged track. We did a great job on set up and thanks to the fantastic adjustable traction control – exactly the same as the road version of the car – we also won the first two stages in pouring rain and near freezing temperatures.

The second day was sunny and I extended the gap over [Franco] Uzzeni in the Subaru WRC and [Oscar] Donetto in the Skodia Fabia WRC. The Team worked like clockwork. I’m also very happy with my team mate Simone Marchetti. He is improving race by race and yesterday achieved the second fastest time overall in one stage and several thirds!!"

The next race in the series is at Franciacorta on 16/17 February on mixed asphalt/soil stages.

LOTUS CARS MALAYSIA today announced the official opening of the first LOTUS Flagship Showroom and Centre in Malaysia, strategically located in Sungai Penchala. In conjunction of the opening, LOTUS also unveiled two of its latest stars, the Exige S and Elise S for the Malaysian market.

The opening of the showroom and launch of the Exige S and Elise S was officiated by PROTON Advisor YABhg Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was accompanied by Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Khamil Jamil, the Executive Chairman of PROTON. LOTUS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PROTON Holdings Berhad.

Part of DRB-HICOM’s plans to revive LOTUS, the Flagship Showroom and Centre is built on 10,520m² of land, and offers a complete LOTUS experience with a Showroom, a Customer Interactive Block, and a Service Centre, where owners will be able to service, and obtain the spare parts for their Lotus cars.

The Showroom covers an area of approximately 1,060m², and consists of sale areas for new and pre-owned Lotus cars. Elegant and minimalist, the Showroom was designed to convey the heritage of the LOTUS brand. Retail areas for Lotus car accessories, Lotus Originals merchandise, a delivery room, and open deck garden and customers lounge are also located in the Showroom building.

The advanced and fully-equipped LOTUS Service Centre is approximately 1,009m² in size and will offer the highest level of customer service to current and future Lotus owners. The Service Centre is able to accommodate up to 20 cars a day and 480 cars a month.

According to Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Khamil, when DRB-HICOM first took over PROTON and all its subsidiaries, including LOTUS, one of the Group’s top priorities was to look into reviving the LOTUS brand. “We have many times affirmed our commitment to the future of this brand, and with the launch of Malaysia’s first LOTUS Flagship Showroom today, we are again reiterating our commitment to the future of LOTUS.”

“There are currently about 140 LOTUS Cars showrooms around the world, and approximately 65 percent are 3S Showrooms, but what makes this Flagship Showroom extra special is the 372m2 Customer Interactive Block, which was designed for Lotus customers in mind,” he added. “A ‘LOTUS home’ for owners, this is where owners will be able to get together and ‘hang out’. This are will also be used to coordinate LOTUS events such as Lotus Convoys, Races, and Defensive and Advanced Driver Trainings.”

The opening also marked the official launch of LOTUS’ latest power players, the supercharged Exige S and Elise S. Already making waves globally, the powerful Exige S was recently awarded the coveted Car of The Year title by EVO magazine, while the Elise S – the latest addition to the Elise range, is perfect for the enthusiast wanting to enjoy the thrill of the ride with even better performance, without compromising on weight.

“These cars represent the best that LOTUS has to offer right now, and I can truly say that the best is yet to come. For LOTUS to remain competitive and relevant, it will be necessary for us to introduce more and more exciting products to our customers in the future,” acknowledged Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Khamil, who added that the way for LOTUS moving forward is to launch products sensibly, and with due regards to proper compliance of quality, cost and delivery.

We have achieved our 80th win in F1™, made a valiant effort in the GP2 championship, scooped the GP3 title, shown our mettle in LMP1 our promise in LMP2, and clearly demonstrated our GT prowess. Yet that’s still not the whole story, for we were a force to be reckoned with in the World Series by Renault, took the German ATS Formel 3 championship by storm plus, more Lotus fans than ever took to the track in the global Lotus Cup series. It’s true to say we’ve been busier than ever!

	Formula One

Wow! It’s been a heck of a year for the Lotus motorsport family competing around the world in 2012. More drama than ever, at every level of racing its been an edge-of-your-seat ride. Formula 1™ has delivered a thrilling season with our team and drivers putting in a fantastic effort from start to finish. Both drivers had their share of podium finishes and fought bravely earning valuable points for the team. However, it wasn’t until Abu Dhabi that Lotus secured its 80th F1™ win. It was Kimi Räikkönen who raged home at the Yas Marina circuit having capitalised on Lewis Hamilton’s early retirement in the McLaren and staving off competition from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso who finished behind Kimi in second place. What was Kimi’s nineteenth win, aided the teams ascension and Lotus F1™ ended the season up one place from 2011 coming fourth in the Constructors Championship. Kimi Räikkönen secured the third spot in the Driver’s Championship, where Romain Grosjean came eighth.

	GP2

The thrills and spills of racing were also clearly demonstrated throughout the season in GP2, where the battle for Lotus was fought hard right up to the race finale. Despite a dogged fight and a second place finish in race one for Esteban Gutiérrez, Lotus just missed out on the series title. Never-the-less the team came in second overall, and Esteban claimed third place in the drivers standings with James Calado coming fifth.

	GP3

In GP3 however, we followed our own trend with Lotus GP winning the GP3 series title for the third year running. This was confirmed when Daniel Abt took victory in race one at the season finale at the Monza circuit. Together with Conor Daly’s points for fourth place in race one, the team wrapped up the title with one race in hand!

The World Series by Renault (Formula 3.5) was another competition where Lotus proved a formidable opponent taking the podium in the third round at Spa, thanks to the skilful driving of danish driver Marco Sørensen. In fact, he had a great season and finishing second at the Nürburgring delivered him the rookie classification. With essential points in the bag, Lotus continued to deliver consistent performances both at Silverstone and the Hungaroring rounds. The team put in a fantastic effort all season, and testimony to their hard work, stamina and tenacity on track, Lotus made a celebrated 5th position overall.

German Formula 3 Series (ATS FORMEL 3 CUP)

More celebrations followed in the German F3 series, ATS FORMEL 3 where the up and coming Lotus talent really had something to say. In the first round at Zandvoort Lotus driver Jimmy Ericksson battled hard and took a much deserved win in race one. Teammate Kimiya Sato followed suit in the third race and romped home for the top spot. 2 victories during the first round was a good portent for the rest of the season.

Both drivers went onto secure wins in the following rounds where some impressive performances led them to outpace their rivals. The Hockenheim season finale finished in style when Ericksson secured the coveted ATS Formel 3 title. Congratulations Jimmy, good job!

	LMP1

Lotus also showed its stamina in the LMP1 and LMP2 series. For LMP1, Lotus team Rebellion Racing had a phenomenal season, which saw them crowned as 2012 FIA World Endurance Champions, taking home the endurance trophy for private LMP1 teams. It took the 12hrs of Sebring for them to get into their stride and by the 6hr race at Spa, the second round of the championship, they celebrated first and second place for the privateer teams, coming fifth and sixth overall. In the 24 Heures-du-Mans the oldest and most prestigious endurance automobile race in the world again Rebellion rose to the challenge, finishing the highest place petrol car and topping the privateer field. Overall, they came in fourth place, two places up from last year’s ILMH assault. The season continued in a similar vein where successful wheel to wheel battles saw them collect precious points and claim a well deserved title.

	LMP2

Lotus LMP2 also made great viewing. This was its first year in endurance racing and the team successfully completed the season delivering a commendable performance. Former F1™ test driver and Lotus works driver James Rossiter joined the team and in the 6hrs of Spa qualified the car a mere 4 hundredths of a second behind the pole sitter, finishing the race in eleventh. position. The team went on to take the checkered flag in sixth and eight place in Brazil and had a good season end in the 6hrs of Shanghai with James Rossiter delivering the best qualifying result of the season. We look forward to seeing the team back in action and aiding their LMP2 offensive for 2013.

	GT Racing

Lotus Racing, the motorsport division of Group Lotus really has been in full support mode the year round, aiding competing teams around the world to victory as the demand for Lotus Racing’s GT cars grows.

They were on hand when the newly developed Evora GTC raced to triumph in the Britcar MSA British Endurance Champions competiion this year. Having secured the class honours in August, The Bullrun Team competed in the final round of the Championship at Donington Park where they were crowned the winners. A great result for a great car and a great team.

Across the pond, another great team Lotus Racing is happy to work with is Alex Job Racing (AJR) who has been making strides in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) with the Evora GTE. Notably, the team came sixth in Virginia, and enjoyed a seventh place finish at Road America in August. Throughout the season the team have developed the Evora, and are excited for next season when they can demonstrate its full capability. We look forward to seeing them in March next year when the 2013 American Le Mans Series will kick-off at Sebring International Raceway with the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on Saturday, March 16.

Meanwhile, the Evora GT4, has been out in-force around the world racing successfully in the Brazilian GT, the Iberian Supercar Trophy, Campeonato de España/IBER GT, Campeonato de Portugal GT, the Dutch GT championship and 24-hour races in Dubai, Barcelona and at Silverstone. The Evora GT4 also competed with Lotus Sport UK in the 2012 Avon Tyres British GT Championship. Oulton Park was where it all kicked off earlier in the year, and we started strong with 3 podium finishes from 2 races, proving again just how competitive the Evora is. The second round held in May at the Nurburgring also left the team on a high as after topping times in the free practice, drivers Sailesh Bolisetti and Phil Glew flew home to victory in arguably the most stylish car on the grid! Lotus Sport UK in 5th position overall in the championship.

	Lotus Racing Karts

Lotus is all about fun, and one of the best ways to enjoy the spirit of our company is with Lotus Karting. This year we announced we were taking up the Karting mantle, the main aim to develop driving talent from an early age. With participants at the ready and Karts that look, well just amazing, the CIK-FIA KF1 Karting World Championship got off to a good start and our professionals of tomorrow continue to cut their teeth earning reward along the way. To all our youngsters, keep doing what you are doing, we’re watching!

Karting draws as much interest as Rallying, and following extensive development the Exige R-GT rally car finally made its competition debut in the FIA European Rally in Madeira, Portugal this year under the helm of Lotus works driver Bernardo Sousa. Much to the delight of the fans he also demonstrated just how awesome this car is at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where Lotus was celebrated as the marque of choice.

So, looking ahead, 2013 has already a lot to live up to, for Lotus’ presence in global motorsport in 2012 has been nothing less than dominant. Whilst we have strived for podiums in every race and worked our way up the grids, we have undertaken many competitions, raced in many classes and at multiple levels. Our fan base has never been more active and with black and gold the colours to support once more, Lotus enthusiasts are experiencing the spirit of Lotus on track in what is the ever popular Lotus Cup Series. With 7 series racing around the world, we welcome more of you into this unique competition and hope to see the grids continue to flourish for 2013, and with the Exige V6 Cup now making its way to all you lucky owners, we are sure to see much in the way of motorsport entertainment on the grid as the prowess and muscularity of these cars really pack a punch. In fact, look out for the new Motorsport brochure where you can learn of the new Exige and the newly developed Exige V6 Cup R Range, which is already drawing much interest. To all of you that race in the Cup around the world, a whole hearted thank you and to all the winners, well done.

So, whilst celebrating a great year, we also say goodbye to IndyCar where we have stepped down as official engine supplier to the IZOD Indycar Series. Never-the-less we look forward to 2013, when we hope to further improve on our big strides made this year, see more podiums, and welcome more Lotus drivers and fans into the sport.

Results show a total vehicle mass reduction of 31% (528.3 kg or 1,162 lbs.) and a $239 (£150 / €188) saving in overall vehicle cost.

Body structure utilises advanced materials including high-strength steels, aluminium, magnesium and composites along with high tech joining and bonding techniques.

Following on from Lotus’ successful “Phase One” study, published in 2010, which looked at the empirical and theoretical weight saving for a standard CUV, Lotus Engineering conducted further research to confirm if a lightweight and commercially feasible body structure has the potential to meet or exceed the requirements for size, luggage volume, comfort, crashworthiness and structural integrity.

Lotus Engineering’s “Phase Two” body structure design was based on the dimensions of a 2009 Toyota Venza CUV and utilised advanced materials such as high-strength steels, aluminium, magnesium and composites along with advanced joining and bonding techniques to achieve a substantial body and overall vehicle mass reduction without degrading size, practicality or performance. The body mass was reduced by 37% (311 lbs. or 141.6 kg), which contributed to a total vehicle mass reduction of 31% (1,162 lbs. or 528.3 kg) including the mass savings of other vehicle systems (interior, suspension, chassis, closures, etc.) that had previously been identified in “Phase One”.

The detailed Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) analysis undertaken indicated that a 31% mass-reduced vehicle with a 37% lighter Body-in-White (BIW) structure has the potential to meet U.S. Federal impact requirements. This includes side impact and door beam intrusion, seatbelt loading, child seat tether loadings, front and rear chassis frame load buckling stability, full frontal crash stiffness and body compatibility and frame performance under low-speed bumper impact loads as defined by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The result is a BIW design with a 20% increase in torsional stiffness over the class leading CUV.

Although the significant mass savings in the BIW design results in an increased BIW cost of $723 (£456 / €568), the overall vehicle cost is reduced through savings of $239 (£150 / €188) identified across the whole vehicle and when manufacturing and assembly costs are included in the analysis. A significant reduction in the parts count from 269 to 169, achieved by an increased level of component integration, also helped offset the increased BIW piece cost.

The background to the study

In April 2010, Lotus Engineering concluded the first phase of a study which substantiated that a reduction in vehicle mass could be achieved for medium production volume vehicles (approximately 50,000 units per year) with a 23% reduction in fuel consumption. In September 2010 the California Air Resources Board (CARB) commissioned Lotus Engineering to initiate Phase Two of the study and take a deeper look into the future of lighter, more efficient vehicles manufactured using lighter yet stronger materials.

Lotus has always been about Lightweight

When Lotus founder Colin Chapman coined the phrase “performance through light weight” he was referring to much more than mere accelerative performance. In the broader sense he meant that a lighter vehicle does everything better, including being more fuel efficient. Over the past 60-plus years, Lotus road and racing vehicles have consistently benefited from this core philosophy and Lotus has developed a strong reputation as a leader in lightweight vehicle technologies.

After decades of most manufacturers building increasingly heavy, feature-laden cars, now the very aggressive corporate average fuel economy (CAFÉ) standards increasing from a target of 35.5 mpg in 2016 to 54.5 in 2025 have all manufacturers reevaluating the virtues of mass reduction and prioritising the materials, technologies and production methods that will enable lighter, stronger and more efficient vehicles.

The supercharged 3.5 V6 Exige S secured the top honour from evo magazine’s ‘Car of the Year’ test, marking the huge achievement of the entire Lotus workforce.

Weighing-in at 1176kg, capable of reaching 62mph from standing in 4 seconds and with a power to weight ratio of 293bhp/ton, brimming with 400 Nm/295 lb ft of torque (@ 4500rpm) – the Exige S* really is something special! Scrutinised by evo’s panel of experts and pitted against the best offerings to the sportscar market this year, the Exige S ties with the Pagani Huayra for first place in the toughest test in the industry.

Battling against nine opposing candidates to make the top six selection in a high octane shoot-out on road and track, and then taking on the giants in the final round on some of Scotland’s finest driving roads, this couldn’t be a more exciting win for the “gorgeous Exige S”.

Richard Meaden, motoring guru and evo contributing editor remarked on the Exige S “I adore its looks, its presence. It’s like a little shrunk-down, condensed, distilled supercar. And I love the fact that when you’re on the road and going for it, it just takes off.”

Lotus Alex Job Racing 11th in GT at Petit Le Mans ALMS Finale

October 20, 2012 - Braselton, GA - Lotus Alex Job Racing (AJR) finished the 2012 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) season by coming across the line in 11th place in GT at Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda at Road Atlanta today. Bill Sweedler, Townsend Bell and Johnny Mowlem fended off early trouble to run the remainder of the race trouble free.

Townsend Bell had the controls of the No. 23 Alex Job Racing Lotus Evora GT for the start of the 10-hour Petit Le Mans at the challenging 2.54-mile,12-turn Road Atlanta circuit. On lap ten the Californian reported "unnecessary contact" with the No. 17 Porsche. Thirteen laps later the contact manifested itself into a right rear lower control arm failure. Bell pitted, under green, and it took the Lotus AJR crew 10 laps to make the repairs and return him to the race. From lap 33 forward the Lotus Evora ran flawlessly in the hands of the AJR trio.

"It was a tough race," Bell said. "Just ten laps into a 10-hour race I got hit by the Falken Porsche for no reason. It took its toll on the car as I had to pit a few laps later and the team had to make repairs. That cost us 10 laps and that was our race. After that the car ran well. Johnny and Bill did a nice job behind the wheel, and the team was performing in the pits. It makes you think what might have been. It has been a development year, and we are already well into the planning for next year. I really like this kind of racing and the series races at some great tracks."

Bill Sweedler likes the way the car ran and is optimistic for the future.

"It was unfortunate that Townsend got hit early on," Sweedler said. "The Falken car just assaulted the rear of our Lotus. We had to make repairs, which put us 10 laps down. That is a little upsetting, without that incident we had a fifth or sixth-place car. After that the car ran great. I am proud of the team and all our sponsor partners. It is tough not racing for a podium or win, but they did a great job helping us to develop this car all year. That we can be proud of and take onto to 2013."

Johnny Mowlem is not happy with the result, but is proud of the effort.

"It is such a shame we had the rear right track rod break," Mowlem said. "The car ran like clockwork all day, and that is a testament to all of the hard work that Alex, and the team have done this season. I have to say that Townsend and Bill drove an absolutely phenomenal race today. The team definitely deserved better than an eleventh for sure. My first stint was very hot. I struggled with a drink's bottle, and I doubled stinted. My second run was really good. I had a long yellow, so I ran most of my laps in the darkness. In the evening our lap times were a second closer to the top GT competitors. Although the result didn't show it, I am happy with the overall effort today."

Alex Job, team principal, put a cap on a development year with the Lotus Evora GT.

"We had a tough start to the race," Job said. "Townsend had contact with the Falken car and that broke the tow rod on the right rear. It took a few laps to get the car back out, but once we did it ran flawlessly to the end. We would have been further up the finishing order by at least five or six places if not for that incident. But, the car ran great the rest of the race and went all ten hours today. That is a testament to the development work we've done the car and a motivator for next year."

Petit Le Mans will be broadcast today Oct. 21, on ABC starting at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

Marvin Kirchhöfer wins 3rd race after charge up the field

After 24 exciting races during the season and a thrilling final weekend at the Hockenheimring, Marvin Kirchhöfer (18, Leipzig, Lotus) achieved another win in the last race. The newly-crowned champion rounded off his perfect weekend with a third win in the third race. In the first two races, the ADAC Sports Foundation protégé enjoyed a start-finish victory and in the final race, he fought his way up through the field from eighth on the grid to P1.

The most thrilling title battle in the history of the Formel ADAC was resolved on Saturday. Kirchhöfer sealed the championship fight ahead of the final race with two wins, having made an impressive comeback during the course of the two race weekends at the Nürburgring and Hockenheim: Kirchhöfer caught his championship rival Gustav Malja (16, Sweden, Neuhauser Racing) on the home straight with five successes in the last six races and secured the title.

New champion Marvin Kirchhöfer wins all three races in Hockenheim. Jeffrey Schmidt third in the championship.

"Finishing the season with a hat trick is simply fantastic. This weekend at Hockenheim has been just brilliant," said Kirchhöfer after his ninth victory and 16th podium finish in his debut year in the Formel ADAC.

Team-mate Jeffrey Schmidt (18, Switzerland, Lotus) made it a one-two victory for team champions Lotus on Sunday; the Swiss driver took second place on the podium to secure third position in the championship.

Comments from the Top Three drivers

Marvin Kirchhöfer, Winner:

"Finishing the season with a hat trick is simply fantastic. This weekend at Hockenheim has been just brilliant, and my car's performance was excellent during the entire weekend. Whilst I won the first two races from pole, I had to fight my way up from eighth place to P1 in the third race. Racing here has been amazing. Zandvoort used to be my favourite track, but the Hockenheimring is now definitely at the top of my list after this weekend."

Jeffrey Schmidt, Second:

"I made up my mind yesterday to finish the 2012 Formel ADAC season with a good result, which I have done. The main thing, though, was my third place in the championship and that was my most important goal for the weekend. Whilst I was a bit disappointed with two fourth places on Saturday, I now realise their importance for my final result in the standings. "

Gustav Malja, Third:

"Obviously, I'm disappointed that I did not win the championship but I at least ended the season well with three podiums in three races. The Lotus drivers were very quick on this track, and unfortunately, I just could not match their speed. Nevertheless, I want to thank my team Neuhauser Racing for two wonderful years in the Formel ADAC and for their fantastic support. I'm really looking forward now to finding out what the future holds for me as far as motor racing is concerned."

The first qualifying session was run in wet conditions, and season-long Lotus racer Marco Sorensen lined up for the Race 1 grid in ninth place with Melker down in 14th. Come the race, though, it was clear that the qualifying times were not representative of the Czech team's speed despite the changeable weather conditions. On Lap 2, though, bad luck struck Sorensen and he crashed out at Luffield along with several other cars due to gambling on slicks on a wet track. Melker also went off there but was able to rejoin, and when the red flags came out due to the number of stricken cars and the flooding, he was up to fifth. Come the re-start, the conditions remained wet and Melker kept his head down to finish a brilliant third on his Renault 3.5 debut.

In Saturday afternoon's second qualifying, Sorensen saw a return to form and secured second, while Melker was down in 18th. Race 2 wasn't affected by rain. At the start, Marco immediately seized the lead and built a gap over Sam Bird while polesitter Jules Bianchi fell back. The Dane looked set for a commanding win, but on the penultimate lap he suffered a puncture and was forced to retire. Nigel also experienced the blues, retiring after eight laps due to a technical problem.

Lotus remains fourth in the team standings with 102 points, 72 behind leaders Tech 1 Racing, while Sorensen drops to fifth in the drivers’. Robin Frijns leads with 131 points.

Marco Sorensen: "I can't believe this happened, we were so close to another victory. The team did a great job and I am really happy that we had so much control of the race. There is no doubt that we have the speed, now we just need the last bit of luck."

Nigel Melker: "My first race in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series and I’ve got my first podium finish. I can be happy with that, but it was a difficult race. I struggled in qualifying and I was a bit lucky during the race, I must admit. But there was absolutely no room for mistakes. I’ll be in Hungary and perhaps [at another meeting] after that. I’ll need to speak about it with Lotus.”

The four-mile, 14 turn course requires a strong all-round package to be competitive and, after diligently working on areas of high-speed downforce, the Lotus AJR pair had exactly that from their black and gold Evora GT.

Bill Sweedler: “We met our goal here this weekend. That was to come here and keep improving. Greg Fordahl, our engineer, and the team made great improvements on the aero. It showed in the performance.”

Townsend Bell: "The little car that can is showing some spark. Our science experiment took another step forward today. We had a better balanced car this weekend and that allowed us to keep within shouting distance of the GT field. We will continue to keep our noses in the data and our hands working to move this project forward.”
