K20 Rotex Supercharger

Sorry to ask yet another question on this topic,

Has anyone had any experiance with the Rotex superchager on the Honda k20? Most lotus owners use the JRSC and I am wondering if there is a good reason for this? the impeller type are ment to be more efficient and lighter, TTS do a kit fitted for about the same price as the JRSC and they are only just down the road from me, sort of. I think the basic kit is non intercooled so still retains standard internals.

Thanks again

Rob

Robin, the Rotrex is not the most popular of choice but there are a few around. Get yourself signed up to seloc as the most well known is owned by Marc (The Foot) and he has a build thread on seloc.

http://forums.seloc.org/viewthread.php?tid=301317&page=1

Matt Child (Matt_C) has also fitted a Magnum charger and that has had impressive results. Matt is local to you and is an MLOC regular.

I think the main reason the JRSC is more popular is because that is what the major converters offer. I've seen impressive results with the Rotrex and definitely wouldn't discount it.

I'll point Marc in the direction of this thread and he will likely give his view.

Thanks for that Miles, I checked out the seloc posts, yes that will be some monster, 400bhp? I dont think i quite need that much! but interesting. TTS quote 300-400hp but it is not clear from their web site if that is charged cooled or not, of if the engine internals need modding. I will have to contact them and find out.

We ran a low boost kit at 288bhp (whp) for quite a while with zero issues, no internal mods required. Now running anywhere between 520 and 600bhp (whp) on a 2.2 built engine.

Pretty sure the 3-400 bhp kits will not be charge cooled.

yes 288 wheel hp sounds like a simular output to the JRSC, I get the feeling that the positive displacement type may give me more low to mid range torque but not the massive power outputs that are achivable with the rotex type, be it with a low compresion engine, I cant imagine that I would want more power than the basic conversion.

For almost any scenario circa 300bhp is more than enough, Jrsc at 340(alleged) bhp will be A) outside of its designed operating speed and B) will drop off in power over sustained runs. The rotrex will be constant run after run.

The more I read and hear about the Rotrex the more I like it, and am tempted to try it on a 2zz I've got in an mr2 at some point in the future.

It's just a shame they aren't rebuildable, and I think I'll always have a preference for n/a power delivery in my track cars.

If I was looking to supercharge a Honda and having driven a few JRSC cars (both with and without a chargecooler), as well as driving Matt's Magnum charged Honda I'd be wating a run out in a Rotrex befroe deciding, becuase if it delivers the power anything like Matt's Magnum charger I'd prefer it over the jackson.

All my opinion of course :)

Thanks for all your comments, always very helpful on this forum, I wounder why OEM manufactures do not seem to use the impeller type? (correct me if i am wrong) lotus have always used the roots type.

Popped into TTS today and spoke to the guys about their conversion, I was quite impressed with their facilities, The 300-400 bhp kit would be roughly 6k fitted price, so it is probably around a grand dearer than the JRSC but it is charge cooled, and a lot more power, They say the standard internals can take up to 400 bhp providing you are not using it for prolonged periods, there's a thought! and as mentioned above, less heat soak. 350bhp would be about right I think. it looking like the one to go for.

Reliability of the supercharger or of the engine? It is a rotrex supercharger, and it is a concern that they are not serviceable, but they come with a two year warranty, to be fair it is unlikely that i would wear it out in that time with the mileage i do. Do you know of any failures? I think they have been around for a few years now.

Rob - have you been in a SC car yet? It might make sense for you to try a JRSC car and a Rotrex to see if there is a difference and you prefer one over the other.

I have a CC JRSC in an S2 and you're not a million miles away of you want to come and have a go. Not sure who has a Rotrex Honda.
