Austintaff
Hi all, I know these things can sometimes be down to personal preference but...... Can anyone advise how much better (or worse) A048s are than 888 tyres?
Meister
For me personally, I prefer R888's the reason for this is that the A048 had more grip than the R888 no question, but when they let go there was no warning, they just went! Also I had a couple 'moments' when driving through standing water. The R888 had less grip but I could 'feel' when they were going to let go so I stood a chance of correcting and they were cheaper. I am no expert and it's only my personal experience that I talk about. HTH Mark
@ndy
Agree with Mark above..... Just to mix it up a little thou, If it were me I would go with Avon ZZR's, Bags of grip and good feedback and much better wear than A048's or 888's in my opinion. I'm currently running the new R888R's and they are equally as grippy as the ZZR's but the wear rate is shocking, If I wasn't forced to run them due to the sprinting reg's I would be on ZZR's. @ndy
Austintaff
Thanks both. Reason for asking is I needed new rear tyres (888 to match the fronts) for Cadwell on Friday but they failed to arrive. I've got a part worn full set of A048's so have put those on. Just wanted to know what to expect (I put 888's on when I got the car so never used them). 888's have been great on mine but not so much in the wet! No confidence at all in the car but at least you can feel that though the wheels. @ndy...thanks for adding confusion. Will see if anyone is running ZZR's at Donny on 19th July and blag a ride. Meister...thanks for advice. Will bear that in mind....not much run off at Cadwell Do you know if any of them are any good in the rain or do I need a second set for that? Meister
Austin caveat (i'm no expert ) but I have done a lot of trackdays!. I personally think that actually the R888 are slightly better in the wet than A048! saying that I have only ever had issues with A048 when going through 'standing' water not really just wet/raining. You'll be fine! Just take it easy if it starts to rain! Mark
jonnyfox
888's as were, were great on a wet track when up to temperature. I've done a lot of track days with them and gained real confidence. A few guys I knew would extend the grooves as an intermediate. Briefly used 48's....balancing was my issue years ago. Lol they both let go quickly in the wet though. Only used ZZR's on the Caterham in the dry and briefly on the right set up but found a few seconds, literally two lately with loads of feedback. Right now my tyre of choice. Whats the advice from Toyo with mixing new and old 888's?
