Chris, maybe think about spending another £1-2k, it gives you a much wider choice...there are a few out there for £11-12k.   As always, buy on condition and history, and given the budget, look at what has been done recently and when - and by who.  And the golden rule of course - check for chassis damage, particularly around the upper and lower wishbone mounts on all four corners...

As Dave says. Another grand or two financed over 4 or 5 years is nowt and it will save you a lot in repairs on a bad car.

Don't buy anything with chassis damage, obviously. If it were me I would look at the car myself and if it seems like one you would like to buy have it looked at by a specialist before you pay the money. Make sure the specialist gets it up on ramps and takes the undertrays off.

I wouldn't buy one without service history.

Condition is important as is mileage - my car has done 105000 miles now but it has needed a new engine, dampers and radiator in the last 18 months - things do wear out.

There is a silver s1 on Autotrader with 43000 miles at eleven grand I think that could be a very good buy if it's in good condition. It should be an appreciating asset if you didn't molest it ...

Sound advice from Dean there, no doubt. This may be worth a look - has had DVA work, S2 Bilsteins and Probax seats too, with recent servicing and it's bang on your budget:

EDIT - Just noticed it has had a new clutch too, and comes with the private plate which is probably worth £500+.

Looks like a bargain to me, those seats are worth £1k alone!
