stockhome
Last trackday at bedford i was seeing temps of 126-127 on track and i think i need a oil cooler. I have had a temp gauge for a few years so i know the temps are accurate, So i have been looking at the possibilities 1) Air to Oil Cooler - Simple solution fairly easy to fit, apparently not that efficient (according to some people on seloc) 2) Mocal Oil to water cooler - I personally dislike the standard installation, it puts the oil cooler and pipes next to and behind the exhaust manifold which i do not think is ideal. Although it does put the cooler in the bypass which warms to oil quicker. 3) Rover KV6 oil cooler this involves reusing as rover KV6 oil cooler from a diesel it can be located in various locations as per pictures I would like to know what real world experiences people have. and their opinions. I quite the like he KV6 as it can be neatly installed near to the oil filter. However in that location you don't get the benefit of warming the oil quicker. Ruxpin
I run the eliseparts Mocal oil to water cooler setup on my standard 118bhp S1 together with eliseparts PRRT and gauges. I'm not sure what temperatures i had before, however, post setup i cannot get the oil above 110-115C on track even when out for 30mins on a hot day and with only short gaps between sessions. The cooler is close to the manifold but hasn't caused me any issues in 2-3years of track use. I believe there was an issue with the length of the supplied aluminium tube in the kit when fitted to my car so we may have re-used the existing and modified it. I can't remember the full details - there is probably a post on seloc as i think someone else had a similar issue. Eliseparts were very helpful as usual. I believe they may have been developing a different pipe length option as the problem only seemed to affect some cars. Rich
dobbo
I had the EP air / oil cooler but I raised it 50mm on brackets so that is was in the airflow from the driver's side scoop it was fine, and that was on a 200bhp k-series revving to 8000rpm. The oil take off was a thermostatic sandwich plate at the oil filter.
AlanS1
I had the same as Dobbo when the rover engine was fitted. Got the kit from Elise Shop. Fitted well without any issues.
Steve J
Have an air / oil cooler behind the drivers side intake. Get 110 - 120 on track and 80 - 90 on road. Still have the original front mounted oil cooler and pipes sat in my workshop as maybe one day I'll refit and have two. Front mounted is in a better air flow position than side.
