How To Fit A Vvc Engine To A Standard K Series S2

Recommended Posts

I am in need of a new engine and fancy a bit more poke. A standard VVC sounds like a reasonably good idea but is it easily do-able? And if so how? Does anyone know?

What ecu would I need? And what about the wiring?

Alternatively what do I need to convert a VVC engine to solid cams?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Dean you will need:

Eu3 VVC engine (160spec)

EU3 vvc wiring loom

S2 vvc ECU and corresponding 5as immobiliser unit.

There are very subtle difference between the eu2 (s1) and eu3 (s2) looms and ecus

https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/252368179346

Engine and gearbox

He will also have Ecu loom and immob unit as he's breaking a whole car good be well worth a call.

I would however be tempted to have it without the gearbox and reuse yours as yours is a CR box

Converting VVC to solid cams and seeing gains over the 156bhp you'll be looking at

A set of cams id go for piper 285H £600 ishfor full kit new

Will need a tiny bit of metal removing on the head.

Enerald Ecu - Ebay £500 2nd hand or £700new

Blanking kit (piper/kiwi) £130ish

Vernier pulleys (kiwi rog/piper) rog- £170 piper -£250ish

Rog's vernier a are made by a company called turbo sport.

Mapping session I'd recommend Dan Webster or emerald.

If I'd used Dan in the first place I wouldn't have had any running issues.

VVC you'll be looking at £1500ish plus fitting

VVC + solid cams 3000/3500 plus fitting by the time your done.

Dean - Just replace what you have for now and enjoy.

Once you go searching for power you will never stop. That is until you fit a Honda :)

I think that should be when "you fit a Honda :)" eh Alex

Thanks guys. Food for thought.

The Elise 's2 111s' engine on the eBay link above has a plastic plenum - are we sure it's a vvc?

And will an s1 engine fit an s2 - my car has no distributor?

Thanks

Dean

Dean an S1 engine will fit an S2 however the s1 engine is lower spec and power out put.

S1 VVC don't use dizzy anyway, they use side mounted coils instead of plus top.

Good spot that Dean, that'll teach me for not looking at the pictures.

Try this one instead.

Dean, really sorry to hear yesterday that your engine has given up. I guess the good news is that you'll end up with more power ;)

Not sure if this is any use, as an alternative? This place seem to have a few available, cheaper too:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MGF-TROPHY-1-8-160-VVC-ENGINE-RECENT-NEW-HEAD-GASKET-45-000-MILES-2001-/351588248749?hash=item51dc4aecad:g:C94AAOSw7FRWVYTx

Or.....and don't laugh......

Buy this. Strip out the engine and bits you need. Break it and sell everything else and spend the proceeds on further upgrades....could generate another £1k easily.....

Advantages - he's had it 8 years - so you know the history of the engine. Low mileage.

Disadvantages - you need a big garage to hide it from your neighbours :)

EDIT - Just read the advert again, you would get £££ for things like the chrome roll bar, spoiler etc on the MG forums, alloys would be very saleable, and you'd probably get £150 for the tyres too - as they are new. Not to mention all the other bits, yikes - it's a whole car!

Has to be worth thinking about for £1000 - he might even take £800.

I reckon it could be stripped to a shell in no time, things like seats, headlights, steering wheel, rear lights, trim, bonnet, boot, doors will all sell for decent money and it would really add up. There's all the mechanicals too of course.

It looks like a very clean & well looked after example compared to most (and no I haven't been looking!!).

Just thinking it would give you a great fund for upgrades on the S2.
