Potential Car Buyer Requesting Copy Of V5

Recommended Posts

I have agreed the sale of my car subject to an independent inspection. Buyer has paid me a deposit and seems a genuine and nice chap (based on a couple of phone calls, an email exchange and an hour face to face meeting).

He has requested a photo of all of the pages of the V5. Is there any reason why i shouldn't provide this? I am probably being paranoid as i dont really know what i think could be done with a copy, but am a little nervous.

Cheers

Chris

I've never been asked for that before...

Did you ask why??

Anything he needs doing can be done without having a photocopy of that....

That said its a lot of money when buying a car privately. If there is no harm in doing this for him, then why not.

**** fingers crossed it all goes through Chris....

I think you have hit the nail on the head here scatty. I think we are both being a bit cautious given the value involved.

He wanted it for part of the hpi check which verifies it is a genuine v5 against the dvla records by using a couple of references off the v5 itself, so seems genuine and checks out against the hpi website.

I'm really struggling to think what someone could actually do with the information on a V5? Maybe mainstream everyday cars where cloning might be an issue but what could they do with a v5 from a Lotus?

You are probable correct (i hope!) and i am just being overly cautious

I've done it now anyway!
