S1 Aluminium Coil Pack Cover

A few years ago, I saw someone selling on ebay anodised aluminium sheets. I had to email the seller to find out what it was, as it looked great and i wanted one but had no idea what it was or where it went.

He said that it fitted above the coil pack underneath the mesh on the engine cover and cured the common problem of rain running through the mesh, onto the plug leads, and then down the lead onto the coil and shorting it out. I said I'd had my car for nearly a year, was regularly left outside in the rain and had never had a problem. He said I was lucky and didn't need on then. So I didn't buy one.

A month or so later, after sitting outside for eight hours in the pouring rain, it started first turn of the key. I drove home stopping on the way to buy that week's Motoring News, got back into the car and had no sparks...

Sadly the car was written off before I had a chance to fit a cover. (The cause of the crash was diesel on the road not rain...)

Does anyone know if you can still buy them?

I bumped into a customer at my mate's garage who had complained about water getting into her engine bay. I've just spent the last hour looking for them and have failed miserably!

Seriously? Does nobody remember these?

Does anybody have any suggestions of how to prevent rain running through the engine cover  mesh and down the plug leads into the coil pack and causing the spark to go out?

I remember the guy selling them saying that this was a common problem.

Is this the sort of thing you mean?

If so, Hanger 111 do a carbon fibre one, at a price: http://www.hangar111.com/shop/274-lotus-elise-s1-rover-engine-spark-plug-cover-carbon-fibre.html

A quick search didn't show up any aluminium ones like in the photo, but I'm sure you used to be able to get them on eBay. Looks like maybe people have stopped selling them?
