I've Got An Interview...

Thank you all so much! There is life doing something after the RAF and nappy changing! I had a really good feeling about it while I was there and I'll spill the beans when I'm established. I know it won't be rock star wages but that doesn't matter, I will be learning new skills and meeting new folk, going to race meetings, and just enjoying something that's mine. I just hope that it turns out to be what I think it is.

All of this is from a chance conversation with the guy who made a few adjustments to my exhaust. I really need this in my life at the moment and am so pleased that it's happening. Thanks again fellas.

Kurt :-)

Congrats! You must be well chuffed!

I'm glad they are paying you (which I know you weren't really after) but it works both ways, you have effectively both made a mutual commitment and as such it shows mutual respect. (As daft as it sounds I'd be nervous as a business not paying someone!! )

Looking forward to hearing some tales of the skills you pick up, and the adventures you have!

Si

  • 2 weeks later...

I did my first day today, I'm just working on Friday all day and Saturday mornings.

Top group of blokes, good banter and hard working. I was tasked with the removal of all the body trim on a 1966 E Type 2+2 road car, ready for a respray. I then did some bead blasting of E Type front suspension arms and other components which I'll continue tomorrow.

The company I'm working for specialise in the restoration, rebuild and support of historic Jaguars, mainly race cars. They have three chassis number 1 race cars in right now, including a Broadspeed XJ12C, XJS and a Jaguar Mk1. These cars are being used next year by Jaguar for promotional purposes, and our firm will provide support.

I'm really pleased with it so far (I know it's only day one), and it's a million miles from the heavily legislative aeronautical environment I'm used to.

Good times.

Haha Martin, I think you're right!

Dean, it's certainly different to my former life.

I know it won't be rock star wages, but we were surviving without an income supplement from me (just about). I'm happy just to back in an engineering environment where I'm hands on, getting dirty, picking up knowledge and new skills. The fact they'll be paying me is a boon, but the sense of fulfilment after 15 months of full time nappy changer/entertainer/educator/house husbanding, is just great. That job will continue of course, but now I have an outlet that is just mine.

Thanks again gents,

Kurt

Mind you I quite fancy this if you fancy a bigger project http://www.platinumfighters.com/#!p-51d-n38227/c132k

THAT is just how I'd want one if I was ever fortunate enough to own my own warbird. I'd love a Mustang (easily my first Euromillions purchase!) and something that's not been restored within an inch of its life is ideal! Well spotted Leigh, just lovely.

Thanks Paul.

I did some close inspection of the green car (seen in my image in the above post) earlier today, its utterly fabulous and lots of tweaks to make it a competition car.

Also I took the engine and gearbox out of a road going Srs1 E Type Roadster today, which was fun, but it took all day.

The best part about it all was the chat by the fella who interviewed me, asked if I'd like to come onto the books soon. As my options are fairly limited, in terms of time off my main job, and I'm really enjoying it, who am I to complain?!? I think when the offer is put on the table, i'll be the one saying YES!! Very pleased, I have some beer money too, and having my own distraction after being a househusband for 15 months, life is good!

Sounds like you've fallen on your feet.

You should have seen all thecwar planes flying over the house today. Spitfires, hurricanes, US paratrooper plane, Mustangs.

Had to keep looking to the skies every few minutes.
