KurtB
Have a shave and polish your shoes... Oh god, hang on a minute, that's what my dad tells me all the time.... #oldskool When I left the mob, I bought some very good Northamptonshire shoes Scatty. Not for any other reason than I knew I'd miss polishing shoes! I polished my old combat boots today. Recently I had my long hair hit with clippers, grade 2. I shaved. I've done the "hair thing" that most veterans do when they leave. It's a phase I had to do, now it's done. Normal service resumed, some habits die hard. :-)
jonnyfox
Grew my hair for three years after I left the army Kurt and outsourced the ironing :-)
Dr H
Can't beat Northamptonshire shoes Kurt. I have a few pairs myself. Oh and remember - you don't need to salute when you enter the room. I'd not get too hung up on the suit to be honest, but I guess you've met the guys at the company and know whether they will look favourably on a suit at interview. Personally I don't put much importance on suits. So long as the person is smart, polite, animated and knows their stuff that's what matters to me. That's what gets the job done - not what you wear. KurtB
Jonny, I'd not considered outsourcing the ironing, where is the wife... ;-) Leigh, I've not met them but think (from research) that the son runs the company and I don't think he's 30 yet, so think he may have a more relaxed attitude to attire. As you say, it's all about the approach to the interview, so I'm not going to get hung up on it. I do like the sound of it though.
KurtB
Well, I had my interview. I dressed in dark shirt and trousers. I would have considered myself overdressed if I'd put a tie on. It was very informal, and relaxed, with tours of the workshops, being shown around by the owners son, who is hands on. I took all my competencies and certificates but they never left the attaché case they were in. I chatted about aero engineering and cross referred it to car things. I talked about being in the public eye on the Red Arrows and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and understanding the audience and mindful I am representing the company. There are opportunities to support race cars at historic racing meets. I think we got on just fine and he's offered to pay me for my time (I really wasn't expecting that!) and up the hours when my daughters time in childcare/school increases! So I've just walked into a job that wasn't there, as long as things work out for both parties, I have a future with the company. I'm going to start a week on the Friday after Goodwood. I'm looking forward to learning new skills, and working for a flexible, friendly and family run company. Best I get swatting up on the car marque they support....
