It's always awful when an aeroplane crashes, for all concerned. All the paperwork pertaining to the aircraft maintenance will be in the hands of the police or CAA, the engineers (I know one of them very well) will be feeling terrible. No need to say that the pilots family will be devastated.

None of the media know what they're talking about when it comes to air crashes, they're keen to keep regurgitating the same old crud so they get the scoop.

For what it's worth, it looks like G-LOC to me. G induced Loss Of Consciousness is a very rapid and disorientating phenomenon and happens in a heartbeat. I've let it happen to me several times as the sensations when coming around are quite pleasant. Obviously it's not Something that is desirable to the pilot. Blue Skies.

When I was a kid, I was an air cadet at school, and I learned to glide. It was a great time. All the aerobatics I did in powered aircraft never made me pass out (and there's no reason why they should), but on my air experience flight in a glider – the first flight of the week that ended with me flying solo – my instructor got us into a cloud. Strictly, we should definitely NOT have been there. The manufacturer's mark on the accelerometer not to exceed was 9g (IIRC), though the RAF had only cleared them to 4.5g (IIRC) since they were only 2 weeks in service. Beautiful, clean-flying things.

 

When you fly through a cloud in an airliner, they are bumpy and unpleasant. When you have 17m of wingspan and only 250kg of mass, it's worse. Much worse. We started going up very, very fast. The accelerometer exceeded 7.5g, and as the g's clicked up, I got tunnel vision and blacked out. I really hoped the boss in the back seat knew what he was doing, 'cos I realised that if it was up to me, we would die. I guess he did, 'cos next moment, we were flying straight and level in clear air above the cloud, and much higher than we should have been. My vision came back, and I was able to be relieved. I probably did it quietly, since it wouldn't have been appropriate to discuss deeper feelings then! It took us another 40 mins to lose all that height, so as air-experience, the flight worked beautifully. But I can easily see why G-LOC could be fatal at low altitude.

 

I'm desperately sorry for all concerned. The repercussions are so wide. I'd even guess that many of the crowd who witnessed it will be losing sleep. Terrible outcome, but then, would we go to airshows without that thrill of danger? Or motor racing, even? I agree - RIP.

I was at Carfest North with the Sporting Bears.

What may not be known is that the unfortunate pilot came down on the Coach Road which was being used by the Bears in and out of Oulton Park on the Dream Rides. It came down between two of our cars who were returning with passengers.

The first was presented with an enormous fireball behind her car, and the second had stopped to demonstrate the launch control when the crash occurred about 100 feet ahead of him. I was further back on the road, again on the way in and did not see the impact.

 

Fortunately all the Bears and their passengers were safe, but our thoughts were for Kevin Whyman, his family, friends and colleagues.

It was a timely reminder of the risks that these people take for our benefit, in this case for a charity event.

 

An impromptu collection for his family set up by the Lytham St. Annes static Spitfire display raised well over £4000 pounds.

 

The Sporting Bears managed to raise £45880 for Children in Need.

That's a fantastic amount of money to raise for Children in need! Well done! Also one of the reasons I bought a Lotus years ago was because of a ride I took in a sporting bears Elise! How can I join sporting bears and maybe help out in the future?

As you know we are all volunteers and it means that every penny donated goes to the nominated charities.

I would suggest a visit to the website  http://www.sportingbears.co.uk which will give you details of the events, regions, charities supported, etc.

 

Some Dream Rides events are "closed" where families from the charities, hospices, etc. that we support are invited and we try to provide smiles.

The open events like Carfest and the NEC Classic Car Show are where we try to raise smiles and money.Events are large and small.

We also have social events - lunches, sprints at Curborough, visits and so forth.

 

Above all it is a great bunch of people with a wide variety of cars. This weekend we had a Ford Model T at one end of the scale and I think the newest was a Jaguar F-Type R, oh and 5 Lotus - 2 Elise, an Exige S, an Exige V6 roadster and my Excel. We also had Lamborghinis (Countach, Murcielago and Aventador) a McLaren, Bentleys. TVRs, 3 Ariel Atoms, the list goes on. But it is not just drivers as we need a lot of other helpers for booking, marshalling, etc.
