MilesH
Purely for handling the closest I've found to an Elise for that sort of money (that you could possibly tour in) would be a mk3 mr2 in my opinion. But there is hardly any luggage space and the engine is not the most exilarating even comparing to a standard S1 Elise. I'd say it is similar to mk1 mx5 pace. There is a high chance of it being reliable though If you were after something slightly newer than a mk1/2 mx5 an Z4 would make a nice touring car and reliability seems pretty good on them. Thinking about it for 5k you may beable to get an early mk3 mx5?

Mutley00
If its out there MK 1 MR 2 Classic. Eddie. Great call Eddie! I've got one that I may sell Chris if you are interested. It needed light cosmetics when I bought it to keep me occupied whilst I was 'off the road' following my knee replacement but it's now finished and raring to go. un1eash
I had my mk1 MR2 for nearly 8 years. Never missed a beat and run flawlessly the whole time. Rust and faded paint killed it in the end So I sold it cheap. There pretty heavy cars and performance is ok but not much storage if your packing for more than a weekend away. Mutley00
I'd be looking for £4k for it. Its an Import Model & was imported in 1999 & has got retractable electric mirrors rear spoiler brake light & Supercharger rear lights and has and has had no welding to chassis whatsoever. Its got a rebuilt Corolla engine in it thats only done 70k miles and a re-conditioned gearbox with a 'longer' 5th gear.. Test pilots welcome! rocketian
Trouble with an MX5 is that is well, a bit of a hairdressers car. But if you want it for a road trip round Europe, it should be OK. Very unlikely anyone will recognise you

Simon Mac
s2000 prices are going up again. if you can get one for £5k, id snap it up. Completely agree, definite future classic. You only have to look at the "competition" MX5's are too common (if you do look at one take, have a good poke around under the car, especially the sill area just in front of the rear wheels. Common location for tin worm, saw one at auction last month looked mint outside, but probably an MOT fail next go round.) Z3's where always a bit crap (bar the Coupe). I borrowed one once and it was nasty. TT's make the Z3 look good. What does that leave? Elise and Boxster. And for £5k you are stuffed getting a good example of either. One final, and really out there choice. Honda CRX del Sol, a guy at work has one, and it's actually not a bad little car. Not much heavier than an Elise, and cracking engine. Shame it's FWD, and the styling is erm different. On the plus side the way the hardtop stores in the boot is genius
