Is A Race Seat Needed With A Harness?

I'm going to be fitting a harness bar and race harness in the very near future. I currently have the factory fitted Probax seats. Would the general consensus be that a race seat is needed with a full harness or would the factory seat be suitable? I use the car for fast road and track days, I'm not planning on racing or sprinting.

As Kosmo says, without the holes to keep the shouder staps in palce they could slip off. See the link I posted for lots of discussion. The video in the first post is a bit extreme but it shows the principle of what could happen.

This is my main concern but would straps bolted to a harness bar not solve this? I notice Eliseparts sell a bar specifically for non race seats. If it really is a big no no then I'll have to hang on until I've got the spare cash for a race seat.

I had a bolt on bar with a harness in that seat and had no issues at all. If the harness was tight enough i could barely move never mind it slipping off! Did a number of track days and a euro trip to le mans with a track day and it was fine.

 

For what you say you will nees it for it should be fine.

The bolted ones should be a bit better but they could still slip over your shoulders as the point at which they are fixed quite a way behind the shoulders. With holes in seats they are 'fixed' just behind your shoulder.

 

I'm no expert on this, but these are my views. Have a google I'm sure there will be some properly considered discussions to look over.

Doing some reading it seems to be one of those truly divisive issues. I think the video in the SELOC thread is quite extreme, the harness doesn't look to be tightened correctly on an already petite lady. Having said that, using a safety device which could behave unpredictably in an already unpredictable scenario (crashing) could be catastrophic. This brings me to the question how much is my well being worth? Time to start saving for a race seat I think.

 Very wise. Use a G lock till you can afford a race seat. If just doing trackdays there is no first place prize. How much is it worth the risk.

Having a look at what's available seat wise, I think I'm going to go for a Tillet B5 or B6. My head already touches the roof when I have my helmet on, so I need something that I can bolt to the floor. Does anyone else have a suggestion as to what out there? Cheers

With your head already touching the roof, that leads on to the next contravertial topic of harnesses - if the roll hoop gives a bit and your head gets a push, with your body held in a harness, will your neck snap?

It's only when I wear my helmet that my head brushes the roof lining. That said I'm still keen to lower the seating position and I think fitting a seat directly to the floor, i.e. removing the slider rails will do this. I'm pretty keen to avoid a spinal injury seeing as I'm still living with the permanent effects of the last one I suffered.
