Windscreen Replacement Specialists Please.

Hi Folks,

I refitted the cat tonight so I can put the Exige through its MoT next week. Going out for a post cat drive, I noted a crack about 8" long in the lower right hand corner of the windscreen (right across the middle of my MLOC sticker incidentally)! I'm absolutely crestfallen (to be polite about it) and think it could be Russ's Karma getting me back for going to park with the other S1 Exiges at Chatsworth!

I've only heard horror stories about windscreen replacements, and believe the clam will need to come off to do a "proper job". If that's the case, a driving lamp could use replacement, and the towing plinth looks a bit sorry for itself too.

So who am I taking it to? Who can I trust not to fudge it up, scratch or damage the bodywork? I live in North Lincs, and the closer to me the better really. Over to the ever helpful MLOC peeps....

Kind regards,

Kurt

I would agree with Steve, I had Autoglass put a new screen in mine.  It had to be done in one of their branches, rather than mobile, as they class it as a specialist job and it needs to be done by their top fitters, but they did an excellent job on mine and really took care of the car.

Ironically I have also dealt with kwikfit with my car (for tyres of course!) in the past and I have found that when they get one of these in they tend to treat them with care because they are not a run of the mill car, however, I suspect many will have their horror stories as well.

It's booked in with Autoglass Lincoln, and has cost me £208.50 (inc £100 XS, and covered up to £500 on the insurance with REIS). It'll be fixed on Thursday. I hope they do a good job...

Did the insurer force you to use auto glass?

If so get some quotes from local independants (they are who main dealers including lotus dealers usually use) assuming they come in below £500 complain to the insurer and request they refund you the sum you topped up by.

Haha Russ! That karma has struck again! I've just returned from Autoglass Lincoln, as they'd ordered the wrong screen. I noted the lovely S2 glass and surround, before telling them it won't fit.

They had a look and confirmed it wouldn't! Then they said that they'd be taking the roof off or could I do it? I wished them luck with that, showing them the rear clam attachment fittings :)

When we initially chatted on the phone, I did ask if they knew the car, and the chap at the other end said,"Sure, we've done a few of those). That in itself set the alarm bells ringing, but you've got to trust people sometimes.

I'm going back in a week to try again...

Remember the screen held in on a plastic surround that is easily stressed if not supported is the load baring component stopping the car from crushing you if it rolls, these guys do not have any idea how to fit one of these asking me to take off part of the car (that is not necessary) do you really expect me to risk my car and my life by letting these guys have a play not fully understanding what is involved etc.

Autoglass Lincoln replaced the windscreen on my Elise without issue 5 years ago. I practically stood over the guy as he did it and he did a good job. Sounds to me like they've assumed your car was a series 2 and they don't actually have the experience of replacing windscreens on a series 1.

I'm with REIS and have the enhanced windscreen cover which has £100 excess and covers up to £1000. AFAIK there has always been a standard or enhanced windscreen cover offered.
