Disused Airfields Nearby?

When I was a spotty teenager, I used to rag round an old disused airfield, practicing my all important hand brake turns :-)

Many years on, I'm now much older and more sensible, and would like to investigate the handling characteristics of my vehicle in a controlled environment.

Are there any disused airfields in Nottinghamshire that you can get into?

There is one at Langar in Nottm that's under used as I recall.

A good idea if we can find one.

Langar is definitely active, they run parachuting from there.

I would think you'd be even less popular if you were caught "investigating handling characteristics" there than outside the local McDonalds car park. ;)

In all honesty I suspect there is very little disused stuff left. It will either be privately owned and used for "track" days, or long since turned into housing or industrial development. Would be nice though!

I remember going over to Langar Airfield with Dan (for those who've been around here long enough to remember him), I think it was back in 2008 and even then the surface was no good for driving on. There was definitely plenty of space but as much as we tried there was nowhere to have any fun without risking pot holes or general broken surfaces.

There are so many airfields around Nottingham.

Nottingham airfield near Tollerton.

Winthorpe airfield near Newark.

Probably loads more.

Let's see what they look like on google earth....

Ha! I knew it!!

On google Earth, Winthrop airfield has tire treads all over it the bit on the other side of the road from the go cart track!!

The surface looks completely broken down though.

Yeah, it was actually Winthrope we used to hoon around in in a mk1 golf and a proper mini. Since there was no power, the only way of getting a slide was by using the handbrake. Oh, those were the days.

Must have been even before you, coz we never got any botha.
