Dr H
Could have been a lot worse, great reaction by the pilot.http://forces.tv/95144845 Kurt - get the spanners in the Exige and get going!
scatty
I think he's on his way. He had to visit the hairdressers and sideburns trimmer before they would let him on base.... :-)
Dr H
I met Kurt for the first time on Sunday. Thoroughly nice bloke. Reminded me of Guy Martin. It must be the sideburns Kurt!
KurtB
GLOL at you both! Yes I've worked on the RNHF former 2 seater (now with the Fighter Collection at Duxford), which after engine failure put down in a sloping field. The only obstacle in that field were 2 trees next to each other. The T.20 slid on its belly and went between the trees, tearing the wings apart and breaking it's spine. The FB.11 single seater they had they lost in 1989/90 when one main gear leg refused to extend. The pilot tried everything to get it down, including high G manoeuvring and even bouncing it down the runway on one leg (!), before referring to the pilots manual which informed him to abandon the aircraft. So off the coast of Prestwick, he throttled back, pointed it out to sea opened the canopy and took to the silk. Pilot safe but a genuine Korean War veteran ditched in the sea to be lost forever. I met Paul Morgan of Ilmor racing engines (Mclaren Mercedes engine builder) who sadly died 2 months later in his when it flipped onto it's back. Sea Fury's are notorious for flipping over, so the pilot of this current accident is to be applauded for staying with it after experiencing engine failure which led to him putting it down without the gear locked properly (the Hyd pump is engine powered, so no engine equals no hyds, equals no normal gear extension). Alternate extension relies on having time and altitude to get the gear locked down. He was very lucky!
