Putting Elise Back On The Road

I had to sorn the elise at the start of February due to a shortage of cash. With the wet winter i didnt think I would miss much. The mot has ran out, but I intend on getting her back on the road in may.

The question is do you save much by only insuring for 6 months? I always used to run the car all year, but after last winter I am not sure if its worth it. I am insured through CCI. Also as it is out of MOT I should take it to a local MOTstation. I know the garage and they are a good bunch (they look after my Mondeo), but I always used lotus specialists to carry out any work. I suppose it all depends on whether she passes.

Must admit I am looking forward to getting back behind the wheel.

Taxing for Bly 6 months costs you an extra 10% over taxing for 12 monts and claims the money back, if you run it for over 6 monts but tax in chunks of 6 months it does end up costing you a noticeable amount extra.

I run mine normally from 1/3 to 31/10 each year ad get a decent chuck back

I do mine for 6 months march onwards and if weather stays good I re- insure and claim back when I take it off the road, still usually works out cheaper than 12 months.

Fish, your still insured if you are taxed, just can't get tax without insurance?

Really pleased to see you getting the loti back out Greg, will you do a small euro trip this year ??

No euro trips planned for this year. Still trying to get my finances straight.

I know there are a few people who only run their cars for 6 months. Last winter just seemed like a waste of time.

Looking forward to a few enthusiastic drives this spring.

I was about to take mine for its MOT this morning at my local garage... turns out MOT isn't due until next month so I haven't even been able to enjoy my short drive -via the indirect route- as she isn't taxed. That's the downside to taxing for 6 months. Yes, I could buy tax online today, but I the only time I'd have to drive is today and then she'll go away again until May. I know buying 12 months saves money on six months, but the saving is wiped out by taxing for an extra month in my case.

Do you still insure your car for 12 months usage?

I will have had my elise for 10 years this year and its the first time I have considered only running her for 6 months after last wet winter.

I've never thought about insuring for less than a year... I only insure for 3000 miles anyway and I'd still want some kind of cover even when she's just in the garage.

I normally insure for 8 or9k miles as I tended to do a euro trip or 2 :-)

Hi Greg, I park mine up most winters, but still insure for a year.

If you go for classic car insurance with limited miles, I think you will be surprised by the quote. I have mine insured for 5k miles and unlimited track days and it comes in under £300 fully comp, which I think is fairly good. Would be cheaper again for 3k miles.

Mine is insured for 12 months, you could got for short term cover and a laid up cover for when it is in hybernation but I doubt it would save much against a limite mileage policy

  • 4 weeks later...

Just insured her today with CCI. 8k miles valued at 12k for £427. I suppose there are some advantages in getting old lol.

MOT is booked at local garage for Monday. Fingers crossed.
