On Facebook reports of my lotus's chassis damage and the R32 needing new coil overs my friend Bradley commented on my two car philosophy along the lines of….
"I don't know much about cars but….Instead of buying two broken old cars, why not buy one good one"
Well here's my answer and see if you agree or have comments of your own...
I think a two car strategy is the best, but the weather and damage to lotus and greatness of the R32 is making me question this…..
First the pro's
One practical advantage is that as long as they break at different times then you always have a car to use
The main thing for myself though is that no one car can be all things to all men. the R32 is great and has heated seats and makes a great sound and can be used in all weathers….as could a 911 or a Nissan GTR….
but ...When it comes to doing the odd track day the cost of these would be awful….but then i'm only doing one or two a year. The Lotus is pretty cheap to run and service generally, especially if you do it yourself.
It also just looks amazing to me. Regardless of cost i just think the Exige looks right and way more expensive than the amount i paid for it.
People genuinely love it too. i've had loads of lads and dads come over to me in car parks or in car washes and rave about it. Strangely It probably cost less than the depreciation on their bmw over two or three years and costs next to nothing to run and service. Go get one! I love taking people for a spin in it or letting them have a sit in it like some well chuffed young lad and his mum in costco car park.
On the right day and the right road, the drive is just completely exhilarating. The vtec growl, the unstick able handling, the respect you have to have from the lack of driver aids, and also the feeling of danger too. Leaves you Breathless or whooping at times. I don't get that from the R32. I do get some other stuff though that i don't get from the Lotus.
Besides that one day a year when the roads are dry and the sun is out…when it's wet and grimy and cold…the R32 is way faster….the feeling of impending death much less. The sound it makes is just as nice but in a different way. the torque from the v6 and hook up from 4 wd is fab. The heated seats….ohhh the heated seats. and i love the look of it when i walk away. Not quite as much as the lotus but its still iconic. Oh yeah and rear seats…always handy for my two kids.
Also i now find myself wanting to spend money on upgrades for both of them….hmmm so should i sell em both and get something like a 2007 RS4? Would that new A45 AMG rocket be all things to me? Or do i stick with my two car philosophy?
Or screw it all and just buy a GT3 and put the kids in a taxi :-)
