I recently changed my front pads to another set of the CL RC5+'s. I'd been really pleased with the previous set, both immense on track and non-squeaky on the road. They were a bit rattly, but some anti rattle buffers and some copper grease sorted them out fine.
This time, the new set of fronts have been incredibly rattly despite the buffers and a spot of copper grease. I've also had a bit of noise when braking, like a soft vibration. Also yesterday, I had some really heavy vibrations when braking on the motorway. I wasn't breaking heavily at all (thankfully!) but it was extremely un-nerving. After this I got some more vibrations but at lower speed.
I took the pads out today to take a look and this is what I found:
(These pads have done just over 1,000 miles, mostly motorway commuting so only light braking use)
Offside seem ok, some brittle edges (more so than the set that have just been removed), but no where near as bad as the near side. The outer pad on the near side set (closest to the camera) has a huge split a few mm up from the bottom edge, starting from the middle of the pad and most of the way through the material in depth. This piece hanging off has since come off. There is no scouring on the disc, but the other half of the pad has that mark at more or less the same height.
For a 1000 miles of motorway use I wouldn't have expected such wear; I've read the stories about CL's, but I thought I'd make my own opinions, and I have been extremely pleased with the first set I've had, but now...
For now i've put the old pads back in, there is still life in them, and will be ok for a short while, to allow me to sort the problem out.
I'd be interested in people's thoughts on this.
