Ooo yummy!

You can see white lumps on the dip stick and what looks like gone off milk in the oil filler hole. Plus all the water vanished!

That's a bit of a shitter Alex. At least it's under warranty. I would make sure they do a hardness test aswell as making sure it hasn't "banana'd", otherwise it will only go again. I think they need to measure the liner stand-proud as well, as this determines what sort of gasket to use.

I don't really know this stuff for sure, but with any luck MartinR will be along in a bit with some proper advice. If I were you though I would be wanting re-assurance that the job will be done properly. I don't know what the mechanics at Christopher Neil's are like - they may be brilliant (hopefully) but even then I can imagine the management baulking at the cost of hardness tests etc.

Good luck. You will have it back fitter than ever for spring, with a bit of luck.

Its not vanished its in the oil by now. Its a lot better going that way as it does not clogg up all the cooling system ( rad, heater etc ) IIRC it goes that way because the pressure in the cooling system is higher. It does goes the other way sometimes. This is a real PITA as you end up with a coolant system full of gunk that needs flushing out smile.png

Ive just seen Deans post. For a proper fix you need to

1) Check stand proud of liners and correct if possible. They should be 4 thou.

2) hardness check ( above 95 Brinnell ) and peen and skim the head

3) Uprated oil rail.

I have had DVA hardness check heads for me. Its a 5 min job with the right equipment. Im sure he would do one at a small cost?

Most places will just remove the head, skim and slap a new gasket on. This is however another HGF waiting to happen. I dont think i have ever heard of a repeat HGF on one that has been done properly. DVA swears by the Payen gaskets.

It's in the hands on Christopher Neil now, have warranty till November 2013 with a value of 5000 pound on it as I paid for the higher limit. Will have a word with Paul the service manager at CN Monday and ask him the processes. He seems a nice enough bloke so hopefully will get it sorted properly.

hmmm, as you say pretty conclusive!

had a good drive in mine today and all seems gone.

will see how it goes!

Alex, on the plus side, so far you are winning the race to take Russ' trophy away from him for most unreliable Lotus 2013!

(There is an actual trophy, I'm not making this up. Fish got it.)

Boom that baby is gonna be mine!

Least I'm off to a good start points wise.

I honestly think if i hadn't taken out the larger limit warranty I would be majorly miffed, however my biggest concern is have no car and doctors appointments twice a week in leicester glenfield for the next 6 week's and no way of getting to them.

Will do when I book it in Monday, be nice to get an evora to use for a week. :)

Knowing my luck it would be a pogo stick.

Alex you'll probably get a car from the toyota part of the dealership.

Subarus, Evos, S3's, 225 TT's and Golf GTi turbos all giving me and my reliable S2 111s a hard time on straights, and then HGF in the spring (Water vented to the world at lights - looked like something off Mr Bean) finally tipped me over the edge to sell or upgrade, So along came a more reliable honda engine.

From my perspective, Hardness test, peening, skimming, checking liner height, new stretch bolts, upgraded oil ladder and new style gasket. Still not sure if its a guaranteed fix tho!

Given my time again, or a warranty, I'd send it to DVA to get the head done properly.

Honda k20? Brilliant engine, I had a type r ep3 prior to the elise.

Spoke to CN will find out in the next couple of hours when its getting collected.

Ask with regards to process and he said they do hardness tests etc

The car managed 42500miles and 9 n a bit years on the original head gasket.

So not too bad.

nothing at all under the cap but found some more on the dipstick today. Went for a gentle 40 min drive and still there. stored outside in the snow.

Does seem to also use a little water and has done since i fitted the engine.

drives fine and doesnt burble on startup. Coolant is still clean.

any further thoughts? does it seem to be HGF and am i gonna damage it further by doing my 200 miles per week in it?

photo's are overly clear so cannot really tell.

I had no signs in the header tank as all the water went into the oil.

have you had it compression tested?

Posted

I've not but ive got one.

Is it ok to compression test with the coilpack design?

Just pull the fuel pump fuse, let it die then disconnect the spark?
