Are There Any Reliable Cars Anymore?

There used to be a select few cars which would just go on for ever without breaking down or costing a fortune.

Looking now and every car seems to have a catalogue of expensive repairs and consistent failures.

e.g. Mondeo = clutch, dual mass flywheel, injectors on the TDI; BMW = timing chain, i-drive, suspension, swirl flaps ...

Are there any gems out there which are ultra reliable and cost peanuts to own?

Had 3 Imprezas over the years and they have all been ultra reliable. They do like a drink admittedly and the quality of the interiors aren't up to BMW standards but apart from the routine servicing I've never had to replace anything out of the ordinary. I must be in the minority now though as they've sold so few in the UK that Subaru have dropped the Impreza in favour of SUV's.....still the BRZ though!

I agree with the Subaru. My sti was modded to within an inch of it life, and 5 years ownership saw me fork out for a new crank sensor and that's it. It was an import which tend to have stronger internals...

I've also owned a civic type r, which was even better. Nothing went wrong with it, bomb proof. Well until it got nicked and ended up in someone's front garden.....a bit thirsty, but ultra reliable......

I've done 140k in A3 2TDI. It's taken me 6 years with no real problems apart from the usual consumables.

Hope I've not given that the kiss of death by saying that !

Merry Christmas all

Had a Lexus (ie a Toyota) for 8 years, and did about 70k in it. It was 11 years old when I sold it. Seriously seriously reliable, so been thinking about a gt86, which has a 5 year warranty, but obviously no 2nd hand examples floating around. And not diesel.

Most TDI's suffer the Dual mass failure at 50-90k miles.

Don't buy an astra - cost me a fortune 2 * clutchs, dual mass flywheel, air con rad, condensor, Alternator, gearbox rumbles like its going to let go - its 57 and I've not had it 2 years yet.

X reg zetec mondeo was good apart from eating tyres and wishbones - paid £1000 for it, and sold it for 500 4 years later. got the astra as I wanted a diesel and something newer - like I said - don't buy an astra.

New cars breaking and depreciating is the norm these days I think. Buy a banger, if it breaks in a big way - scrap it and buy another! You don;t get wound up when people reverse into it and drive off either!
