Any clues on what it is doing or not doing? Make/model?
I'm no repair guru, but did manage to fix mine when it wouldn't switch on from standby.

Its a 2 year old samsung its lost all power not the cable as tried a new one. I belive its the capacitors which after a bit of research seems common with them.. Seen a video on hair to fix it but dont have parts or a solder iron so thought best leave it and try get a repair

Ahh yeah same as mine. The blown caps are easy to spot at least. I'd help you out if I was a bit closer. It's not difficult if you've got a steady hand; new capacitors are pennies (I use RS Components for er, components) and I'd imagine purchasing a decent soldering iron will still cost less than an engineer will charge.

My 3 year old samsung will regularly take 3-5 mins to turn on from standby. The red standby light just flashes and then eventually it comes on. And i cant turn it off onto standby as then it just doesn't reapond to anything. It started doing this about 12 months ago and i expected it to gradually get worse and then stop working altogether but it has just stayed the same. I really need to get the back off it to see if the capacitors are knackered but i'm loathed to do so whilst it is still "working". One thing is for sure though, i won't be buying a samsung again!
Sorry, long way of saying i dont know a tv repair guy as i am just burying my head in the sand!

Chris L, that's exactly what mine was doing. Samsung seemed to use caps that were simply under spec'd for the job.
It just has to be the caps on yours too as it's showing exactly the same fault. I think I replaced three or maybe four caps with the same capacitance value but slightly higher voltage rating- I figured the output of the power supply was too close to the voltage rating of the Samsung spec.
I went through exactly the same thought process as you: didn't want to take it to bits as it ultimately still worked. It got to the point where I could go and have a shower and it still wouldn't switch on. (The GF was getting more fed up with it than me, so I opened it up for a quieter life
)
It must be about two years ago I repaired it and it's still fine- turns on instantly.

Fuse? If not the obvious fuse in the plug, but there's probably an internal fuse too.

I have a 40 inch Samsung that I bought six years ago when HD came out. Samsung have a nice balance of value for money and important key features. Mine did go bang after three years!
I had mine fixed when it broke by the repair agent in Derby. They just swapped the main power PCB for the price of a trackday.
